A fine hello to you, my Escapist friends! Recently, I've seen some gameplay of Far Crys 2 and 3 and I decided that these are games that I just cannot continue my life having not played. As Christmas is right around the corner, I will probably ask for one or the other as a present. My family is pretty low-income, so I'll only feel comfortable asking for one.

That being said, which do you think would be the better purchase? Also, since I don't really know much about the games besides a few gameplay videos, any general information would be appreciated (length, difficulty, etc.). From what I've seen and read, I think I prefer Far Cry 2 thus far, but that might be subject to change.

Thanks for any help in advance! :D

2 was terrible, absolutely functionally broken AI and spawning. Go through checkpoint clear it out, 5 min later have to do it again. Get malaria and suffer sluggish controls and blurry screen randomly. I only made it about 2 hours into it before I said screw this. 3 seems to have fixed a lot. honestly if you can get 3 you can get both, since there is usually a ton of used copies of 2 at gamestop for 4.99-7.99

I've only played through 2 hours of Far Cry 3 but I did beat Far Cry 2. I recommend 3 over 2, without a shred of doubt in my mind. Far Cry 2 has: a lackluster and forgettable story, some really crappy voice acting, broken spawning (as aforementioned), weapons that degrade ridiculously fast and no memorable characters. It was fun at first but a few hours in and I felt like I was playing only because I felt obliged to see it through to the end.

2 was... not very good. It got extremely repetitive, very quickly. Thus far the reviews for 3 look very promising, and a lot of people on these forums seem to like it.

It still is quite repetitive, and the AI isn't very challenging. It still is a fun game though. Not as broken as Farcry 2, that's for sure.

Hey OP :)

Let's put it like this: Far cry 2 is really bad... Far cry 3 is fun!

Far Cry 2 went a bit too far down the "realism" path for my tastes. The jamming guns, the frequent bouts of malaria, the novel real-world map presentation that made it an awful video game map, difficulty in figuring out where the enemies are against a cluttered backdrop, and the like. And it's one of those open-world games where the world isn't filled with interesting things to do.

I've been really enjoying Far Cry 3 so far, as it takes the best bits of Far Cry 1 & 2 and makes a solid go at the open-world. It's still a bit barren (how hard would it have been to populate the caves with bears or tigers or drug dealers?), but I'm enjoying scouring the map for all the odds and ends since I really like the kind of thing in Assassin's Creed and am loving the return of the WWII Japanese relics.

Way things have been going of late, wait a few weeks and you'll probably be able to pick up Far Cry 3 for around $30.

Haven't played 3 myself, but I did like FC2. It's a very different experience from most FPS games.
Besides the annoying repetition in FC2, the game has some cool strong points. I think the best part about the game is that it treats you like an adult. It lets you choose what you want to do and instead of forcing you down a path, gives you a bunch of cool tools to solve problems however you like. Its in-game choice system respects that you're old enough not to be beaten over the head with blunt morality.

Far Cry 3 is undoubtedly a better game. However, I miss the African setting from FC2. I really loved that. I want Far Cry 4 to be like Far Cry 3 set in Africa.

Is the shooting mechanics any better in FC3 ? I found them atrocious in FC2.

I heard FC3 is piss easy.
I wouldn't call it piss easy. I've had a few really tense fights because I lost control of them early. But if you go in with any kind of plan, you'll likely not have too much trouble with it... and the sudden appearance of tigers and bears can easily ruin the best laid of plans.

I'm enjoying the shooting a lot more than Far Cry 2, mostly because of the return of enemy tagging. Far Cry's environments aren't the friendliest of places to get into gun fights without some sort of map assist. I swear I spend all my time in Far Cry 2 firefights just trying to figure out where people are.

Obviously the number 3.But both was equally empty and pointless. Both was focused on consoles only.
Buy a game worth 60$ and spend time doing sandbox missions to replenish your money's worth.
Thankfully enough 3 had a more engaging world than 2.Both open world FPS as they liked to be called intrigued me less than the original so i would rank far cry 2 as crap and far cry 3 as less than crap

crap=3.0/10.0

Let's not put the first game on too high of a pedestal. The best part of the game, the part everyone praises to the heavens is the mostly empty (save for the odd WWII Easter Eggs) sandbox world which allowed you to approach areas in a variety of ways... and upon arriving, they'd usually just spam the hell out of you with waves of reinforcements.

And it notably faltered when it took a turn toward the sci-fi or went indoors with some okayish corridor shooting. And, seriously, we're dealing with a PC shooter that had already internalized most of the so-called "dumbed down" elements of the console shooters, such as the limited weapon slots and no proper save feature.

Far Cry 3 could use some more variety in its shooting galleries and the interior locations are just screaming to be made into enemy/animal lairs, but the game does a hell of a lot right... and doesn't go completely off the rails like Far Cry 1 did.

2 is the smarter game but a difficult one to enjoy, 3 is a game to be enjoyed in the more typical sense, although it can come across as quite game-y at times.

2 really is, quite appropriately, equivalent to how it feels to watch Apocalypse Now. Far Cry 3 a decently-written, well-acted blockbuster.

Far Cry 2 is going for extraordinarily cheap these days anyway.

I want to go to the arctic so I can leap out from walls of snow and gut people. And in the game.

I actually enjoyed FC2, because the setting is absolutely gorgeous. Nothing beats cruising around the Savannah, trying not to run over Zebras - but the constant spawning checkpoints really ruins it a little.

I think it would be best to go for FC3, because its presumably an improvement. And all the colours!

FC3 is a massive improvement over FC2. It makes a decent attempt at being everything FC2 wanted to be but wasn't.

Far Cry 2 is cheap as dirt, but it plays sorta like dirt. It also looks like dirt...so much brown. I loved it mainly because of the setting. You can REALLY get immersed in it.
And dat soundtrack. That string music and drums that played when you were just walking was great. Pretty much the most underrated soundtrack in anything.

Anyway, I have yet to play Far Cry 3, but I soon will, most likely. Someone said it's pretty much Far Cry 2 without the flaws. All I can tell you about Far Cry 2 is what has already been said, I liked it, however.

If you're only getting one, get Far Cry 3 as it is a whole lot better than 2. I advise you to play both though, but 3 kicks 2's ass by far.

I hated Far Cry 3 on so many levels its hard to express my feelings.

The story is marred by the Noble Savage [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NobleSavage]. Following the main story is no better than a spunkgargleweewee. They lead you around by the nose, passing you from one set piece to the next, while presenting completely unsympathetic characters.

The missions totally curb stomp the game's open world nature. If you fail or leave the mission's zone you have to reload. This means missions won't be far away and you cannot do anything besides complete that mission. Its not like Skyrim where you're delighted to see a quest half way across the world because it means hours of adventuring fun as you hike your way over there (Yahtzee quote, see Skyrim review).

I was on my way to finish a mission. However, I ventured too close to a baddie base. So the base called for endless reinforcements. I couldn't clear out that base because I would leave the mission's zone and be forced to respawn half way across the island. I couldn't finish the mission because the base was calling for constant reinforcements that would drop down on my head.

The skill system is pointless because you can get every skill well before the end of the game. Why try to customize your character?

I really want my money back. I've never regretted a purchase as much as this.
