So before entering college I was already a pretty heavy guy, but combined with my freshman 15 I'm coming dangerously close to not being able to see parts of my anatomy anymore. I try to work out, but I have a hard time staying committed to anything. The clOSES I ever came to a regular workout was DDR Which led me to believe that I just have to find something that fits my interest. So what does the Escapist advise for potential weight loss solutions. Oh, and I'm not about to pay the money for a Wii or Kinect.

1. Stop drinking sweet drinks - drink water/tea/coffee instead.
2. Step eating sweets (and if you have to, make it dark chocolate 70%+ or nuts).
3. Walk at a fast pace 30 min a day.
4. Cut consumption to half of what it is now, and still eat healhty and varied.

4 easy steps.

Drop the excessive lipids and glucose, consume only as much as you deplete.

There.

Can't do it? Enjoy never seeing your toes again.

This is kind of what I'm looking for interesting or fun ways to burn some weight rather than simply dieting.

They made me cut down the "Ha-ha" due to making a few people cry, tears are the punchline...

Anyway, you might also want to consider intensifying your daily energy consumption routine. Anything that makes you sweat is good.

Step 1: Cut down portion sizes and eat 5 times a day - stop eating two hours before bed.

Step 2: Half of exercise is "will power" use it or dont "lose it" :)

Step 3: Routines like "INSANITY" and "100 push ups in 7 weeks" have helped me. INSANITY in particular but it is damn hard

Step 4: Sorry bud but losing weight and dieting isn't a quick fix no matter what health expert says "this diet work/that diet works" it is a lifestyle change, if you aren't willing to change and stick to it for life, don't do it.

Hopefully some of that hasn't come across arrogant.

Play console games on an elliptical trainer, its what I do. I burn 1300 calories every day doing it, for 1 hour each twice daily. There's no other way to play games which exercising. I find sword fighting to be exhausting. However that means it's burning lots of calories. Also, be sure to look at this:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.216049-Poll-Who-Wants-To-Lose-Weight
If you can manage to set you're computer up so you can use it on an elliptical that's even better. But unless you do some kind of Wii Fit thing (my mom has it, I never use it) you'll never lose weigh without an elliptical trainer. Jumping jacks are great, but it's hard to do them frequently enough during gaming to actually burn calories.

Not eating before bed is fiction.

I'd check out caloriecount.about.com. It's an excellent health-oriented online community with a resident nutritionist available to answer questions. They can offer you personalized advice on what you need to do to get in better shape.

The best advice I can give you is not to obsess over weight loss. Gradually alter your lifestyle as need be, but don't get all worked up about it and overthink the change. Just go with it and you'll notice results a lot quicker.

Best weight lose advice I've heard in a long time. I lost 25 pounds a few years ago just by cutting out sugar, not having second helpings or extra snacks, and exercising every other day. I know how hard it is (I'm doing it again right now), but the work is worth it.

Like Boris here said, do a fast walk for at least 30 minutes a day, I would suggest an hour, but that's just me.

You don't have to run or do hard exercise to lose weight. For the most part, it's a simple math equation. If you take in fewer calories than you put out, your body will use it's reserves (aka fat). However, if you take it more calories than you put out, your body will store that extra energy.

It's really hard work, but it's so worth it. Also, if you do diet, make sure you have at least 1200 calories a day or check with your doctor.

Good Luck!

Rancher, there are no easy answers here. As a former fat man I can tell you that minor changes to your lifestyle are not going to change much. Here's how I did it:
1. I went to Fort Knox, KY for basic combat training
2. during training, I did not drink anything but water (seriously, they didn't even allow me fruit juice)
3. physically exerted myself 10-20 hours per day depending on the training schedule
4. ??? (kept it up for 4 months... I went through a lot of hold-under companies. Long story)
5. Profit! (lost 55lbs overall while gaining a whole bunch of muscle mass.)

...what can I recommend for you, though? Walk, run, swim, ride a bike... or something. do it for an hour, three times a week at a minimum. Also, replace parts of your diet with salads and lean protein (poultry, fish). Cut down on bread and sugar, and drink a lot of water.

Eat as much as you want (avoid deserts/sodas as much as possible though), and start lifting weights with some minor cardio thrown in for good measure. Burns calories all day, even when you aren't actively lifting. And once you get into it, it's like a really fun game that makes you feel awesome. The only you have to remember is that results take a lot of time. When I first start lifting I was up to 255 lbs (I'm 6'4 but that's still terrible since it was all fat). Now, two years later I'm down to 190. You'd be amazed how much better you feel once you start exercising regularly and drop weight. It's also kind of crazy going from nobody wanting you to all of a sudden people hit on you frequently.

Basically, if you can tough it out and force yourself to stick to it, at some point down the line you'll look back and be so incredibly glad you changed your way of life.

I know you asked for a "nerdy" way to lose weight, but honestly, I don't think that there's a reliable way to actually get fit in that vein. There's a reason so many people lift weights: It works really well. Just try to force yourself to do it, and after a couple months of forcing you'll actually look forward to workouts.

a stone is 14 pounds or roughly 6.5 kilos so 11 stone is 154 pounds which really isn't that heavy to be honest, depending on your age and muscle to fat ratio.

From personal experience what did it for me for was weights and cycling. I have the "benefit" of living in a deserted farming wasteland where i can cycle for hours on roads without seeing a living creature that doesn't go moo, baa or tweet. I'm assuming on a college campus you don't have the space, freedom and privacy that one desires for this kind of leisure. All i reccommend against is running/jogging. It's boring, it's a huge and pointless strain on your body (your heart and lungs will cry out for rest long before any fat actually starts to burn) and should only be used by already fit people to get even fitter. Other than that, walking, dance, martial arts, whatever is in your area and interests you, it's all good.

As for weights i can't see anything less easy to do. You can chisel off those man tits, tighten your underarms and get better definition in your forearms ( you will be able to actually find a vein) with just curls and benches. If you dont have a bench then do push-ups - seeing as you are a heavy guy to start with, the extra weight on your muscles will only help you. A skinny guy can take ten years to get ripped but a fat guy can do it in a few months. You shouldn't do the same muscle group two days in a row and you can leave up to a week's rest if you like, with almost no loss in muscle growth. That means you're doing 20-30 minutes of weights a week, hardly too much is it ?

As for eating, i suggest a few days of crash-diet, nothing dangerous, but it will let your stomach shrink down and reduce your cravings, and some foods you would never refuse before can seem almost sickening to you, so you can start over. If you cant function without breakfast then go for cereal - no pastries and no fried shit. Have a good-sized balanced lunch, and a small indulgent dinner (but not too indulgent).

If you feel like you've heard all this before it's because you have, the only "nerdy" exercise i can think of is maybe......... LARPing ? Anyway good luck, and remember circumstance and environment are VERY important, you need to remove yourself from situations where you eat the wrong things and put yourself in situations where you feel motivated to exercise, otherwise you will burn out as you have before.

OK, the normal response is:

Atleast 30 minutes of moderate cardio activity each day.
Reduce your calorific intake to around 2100 calories a day, then down to 1800 a day after 2 weeks.
Avoid alcohol until you drop down into 1800 calories each day, and after then make sure you don't let the calories from alcohol make up more than 25% of your daily intake of calories.
Switch from simple sugars such as basic sweet foods, to complex carbohydrates with plenty of protein and fibre.
Avoid snacking on anything high in protein or fat between meals, stick to fruit and vegetables.
Do not, under any circumstance, eat fruits with your regular meals, or drink fruit juices with your meals.

The simpler response is:

Slimfast or Cambridge diet. :D

Some of this is true but parts are not exactly true.

Calorific intake is based on a number of factors including height, weight and age. Although I am overweight I would still need to eat approx 2500 calories (including a 500 decrease for weightloss) at an active routine.

Simple answer is this

Find a calorie intake calculator

Use your own measurements to find your daily intake and take 500 off for weightloss, remian same for toning, and plus 500 to increase mass. Give or take.

From experience, and this helped a lot when I moved to the big city:

Go broke.

I've been living off of tap water and 5 minute rice for far too long, but my pants are a lot looser.
