I have never settled on one. I like too many bands. For longevity and just kicking ass Iron Maiden is up there as a good band, along with Goldfrapp, NIN, Pearl Jam and a whole score of others.

As for bands that people have heard of, I would probably have to give it to either The Rolling Stones, Primus, or Rage Against the Machine.
Edit: I have heard of Flogging Molly. I have never heard their music but they are doing a St. Patrick's Day gig in DC March 14th with Carbon Leaf, so I probably will hear their music soon.

Flogging Molly. now, if i can find at least ten other people on this site who's heard of them, all will be right in the world.
My taste changes a lot, but at the moment my favorite band is Coldplay. Others are Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Paramore, Barenaked Ladies, and Evanescence. I like most music, though... I have a very varied taste, even if I don't know a lot of bands by name.
