Just curious to those Escapists who also read comics, what one-off or mini-series you enjoyed most.

Mine is DC's Kingdom Come. Set about a generation after the "current" (post 96) DC Universe, it involves Superman in self-imposed exile after the death of some of his best friends at the hands of the Joker, who in the end gets killed by a new super-"hero" named Magog. Superman, outraged at the public's reaction to Magog's brutal murder of the Joker, quits being the "world protector" and retreats to the Fortress of Solitude. His self-imposed exile results in the world's metahumans no longer having a "moral compass" to guide them and thus now openly war with each other regardless if normal beings get caught in the crossfire.
There's a lot more to the story, but I'm not going to spoil it for those who haven't read it yet. But pretty much every DC Super-Hero or Villain gets at least a nod in this, plus some who seem to be descendants from other heroes/villains.
It kinda parallels the Civil War idea in the Marvel universe but leads me to believe, since it was written years prior to that storyline, that Marvel borrowed heavily from the premise.
Even though its technically part of the Elseworlds comics in DC, there have been notations to Kingdom Come being the canonical future.

Anyway, whats your favorite?

Axe Cop Bad Guy Earth. Such an amazing mini-series. Great art and funny as hell. For a more series one, I really enjoyed Civil War. I'm not much of a DC fan, so I don't think I'd enjoy the one you mentioned, even if it was possibly inspiration for the CW. The only character I like from DC is batman, though there's some that look more interesting with the coming reboot.

Marvel's Fear Itself. Each one focus's on different Superhero and their greatest fears. Right now they have a series on Thor, Spiderman, Iron man... and a couple others that don't come to mind at the moment.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - A legendary story for a good reason, I fell in love with it about 20 years ago. The Crow - I finally read the comicbook a few years after seeing the movie and it is very beautiful and moving especially if you knew the creators mindset when he made it.

Galacta: Daughter of Galactus

I just wish they would make her an Earth 616 confirmed character. She'd be fun to have.

that was done by Adam warren in his manga style

OT: someone already mentioned the dark night returns and superman: red son so I'm going to go with either watchmen or v for vendetta. there's a lot more that i want to name but cant at this second

Watchmen...

What, no link to other continuity? Only 12 issues? No sequel? It's so a mini-series.

Funny thing, Watchmen was given nods in Kingdom Come. Hollis Mason's book makes an appearance and Rorschach in the background of one of the panels. However, they were confirmed as just nods and not actual canon appearances thus preserving Watchmen's standalone universe.

I just got done with Batman RIP and enjoyed it immensely. My favourite just tends to be whatever I'm reading at the time.

"Batman/Grendel: Devil's Riddle" and "Grendel/Batman: Devil's Masque", by Matt Wagner (1993). When the mysterious assassin Grendel enters Gotham City for unknown purposes, he, Batman, and two very different women see their lives become intertwined.

HONORABLE MENTION: Havok & Wolverine: Meltdown, by Walter Simonson, Louise Simonson, Jon J. Muth and Kent Williams (1988): Havok and Wolverine take a trip down to Mexico, and end up dealing with everything from conspiracies revolving around Chernobyl, to bar fights, car chases with cyborgs in hovercars, and the bubonic plague. And that's all in the first of four issues. Easily one of the best looking comic mini-series ever, with an interesting psychological study of what happens when a spy gets too deep into their undercover role.

The Age of the Sentry was quite enjoyable, because the Silver Age was awesome.
NEXTWAVE was so awesome and cinematic that it got it's own theme song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk3p9rqLKGA.
I also enjoyed Batman: the Doom that Came to Gotham, less "Batman beats up Cthulhu" than you'd hope, but still very enjoyable and Lovecraft-y.
But if I had to choose an absolute tip-top favoritest ever miniseries, I'd have to go with DC: the New Frontier, first off, the Martian Manhunter manages to be not boring for once, and the book is just so good that it almost made me cry.

I probably have to choose either Watchmen or Marvel Civil War since they both got underling theme and dicussion values (Kingdom Come is also a good one).

Marvel Noir
Such a lovely treat to witness some of our favourite heroes in such a twisted light. The storyline essentially encompasses a good few of the more classical Marvel heroes such as Spiderman, Wolverine, Iron Man and even Xmen and Luke Cage, but with stories set during the prohibition and, largely, without superpowers. Wolverine is a private detective who fights wielding katars, Cyclops is a crack-shot blind on one eye and Luke Cage is just one rather tough gentleman, to name a few. I have not read them all yet, but the concept is wonderful.

Either Atomic Robo and the Shadow from Beyond Time, or The Ultimates 2.

And? Its not a manga; its still considered a regular comic.

that's very debatable right there, granted the subject matter is a regular American comic(it is a marvel comic after all) the art style is manga. don't get me wrong i like Adam and his work(fan of empowered) and liked the comic(evenalothe i do think that Galacta needed to show some respect to reed)

Except it could be argue she really wasn't ever there to get Reed's help. Her plan the entire time was likely to just distract him long enough to figure out where the Ultimate Nullifier was, and then leave.
