What comic strip do you most enjoy? My favorites are Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side. I found Calvin to be a relate-able character, as I acted much like him when I was younger.

Do web comics count? I hope so, because I read a ton of web comics.
My favorite would be xkcd.
I also like Questionable Content, Girl Genius, Bad Machinery, SMBC, and Girls with Slingshots to name a few.

If we're talking about one comic strip then this:
Tiny Hippo

If we're talking about webcomics or comic strip series-
Oglaf, Cyanide & Happiness, OOTS, Manly Guys Doing Manly Things, Oatmeal and many more.

If we include web comics (I don't read that many paper comics), then 8-Bit Theater is top of the class. Takes a little while to hit its stride, but once it does, you'll want to read all of it. All 1,225 strips, plus bonus material.

Calvin & Hobbes for me too. Besides being hilarious, that strip had soul too. And Waterson really did it up for the Sunday strips sometimes.
Far Side would be a close second. That one always cracked me up.
Going by the responses here, those two seem to be were comic strips peaked.
Those two were the only reason I could call that section of the paper "the funnies."

Another couple of votes for Calvin and Hobbes and Far Side. I remember my grandfather introducing me to the former and loving the little weird expressions the characters made and some of the more simpler stories. As I got older though, I read through them again and began to appreciate some of the strips that provided deep and insightful messages. Like the one sunday strip where Calvin talks about how animals never judge you or expect anything out of you like people do.

I also enjoy the heck out of Cyanide and Happiness:

Oh god... the Comic Strips in the Local Papers (The Calgary Herald and The Calgary Sun) just keep getting worse... at least The Herald has Get Fuzzy and Pearls Before Swine but the Sun... oh man... it's so bad... every time I even glance at the comics page while grabbing my morning coffee I feel humor die a little...

But webcomics? Man I LOVE webcomics...
- Dr. McNinja, the best thing ever... period...stop.
- Questionable Content, I just can't stop enjoying it.
- Weregeek, low-key and sometimes puntastic geek humor... also written/drawn by a friend of mine so REDING IS REQUIRED!
- The Least I Could Do, because Lars De'Souza is a fantastic artist.
- Girls with Slingshots, because Danielle Corsetto is a fantastic artist, funny writer and all around classy lady.
- Johnny Wander
- Oglaf, for the perverts among you, it is very NSFW.
- Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal

Which ones are in the Sun?

I'd say that the funnies peaked in the 1930's with Little Orphan Annie, Krazy Kat, Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse, Thimble Theater... As you can probably tell, I'm a huge fan of old-school comics.

Comics in the traditional sense:

Calvin and Hobbes, take me back to my childhood, but also indulges my adult intrigue in philosophy and Calvin's glorious vocabulary.
Garfield, the original cat that did things to make you laugh before the internet.
Peanuts, lots of fun to read, still holds up well, especially the older ones.

Web comics:

Dorkly, it seems like you either love or hate Dorkly, I am the former.
Brawl in the Family, it is a comic done by a huge Nintendo fan, for huge Nintendo fans.
Cyanide and Happiness, I'm not a fan of overly vulgar things, but I can't help but like it.
Awkward Zombie, lots of fun general gaming related comics.

Which ones are in the Sun?
Lemme see if I can remember them...

The lackluster ones are The Barnyard and Dog Eat Doug

Scary Gary ALMOST makes me laugh sometimes because it's a little bit morbid... occasionally...

The two absolute worst are Daddy's Home and Zack Hill... so out of touch yet trying to be modern... it's painful... Zack Hill is like a humorless, soulless version of Zits and I don't even know what Daddy's Home is supposed to be...

I wasn't familiar with all the ones that you mentioned, so I used powerful internet magic to check them out. I can't figure out what Daddy's Home is supposed to be either, and Zack Hill isn't funny to me either. I actually laughed at Scary Gary, bu I don't like the art at all. Dog eat Doug was meh. The punchlines were good occasionally, but it didn't have any other good qualities. I couldn't find The Barnyard, but I did find one called The BArn. If that's the one you mean, it's so-so. I get Get Fuzzy and Pearls Before Swine every day in my email, and really like them.

Well this is the Escapist, so I'm gong to say Critical Miss. I ignored it for many years because I didn't think it would be enjoyable, but I recently got bored enough to read the entire series in one go, and I found that it's actually quite good. Second only to Cyanide and Happiness.

But if we're talking about the old newspaper ones... Get Fuzzy, of course.
