So with this console generation starting to wind down, I thought it would be fun to see what game people enjoyed most. You can only pick one game, but it can be for any reason(s) (gameplay, story, etc.) as long as it came out on a console this generation. Feel free to explain why it's your favorite, maybe you'll convince someone who hasn't played it to give it a shot.

I have too many to name, so here are just a few names.

Burnout Paradise
Halo 3
Sonic Generations
FTL: Faster Than Light
Dead Space series

I think my all time favorite has to be Fallout 3, just for how much enjoyment out of it.

It's hard to pick one out of all of them so:

Halo
Mass Effect 1,2,3
Gears of War 3
Fallout 3
Skyrime
Oblivion
Too Human(Yeah, I know, I'm going to burn in hell)
Minecraft
The Walking Dead

And many, many more.

Urrggh...

Fallout 3 I guess. Tempted to go with Halo 3 or Halo 3: ODST.

I don't know D:

Then there's Dragon Age: Origins, New Vegas, and Dark Souls as well. Not to mention Portal 1 and 2 and Dead Space :(

You know what? I hate these threads. You're mean to make me choose

I'm going to completely cheat and say Metroid Prime, because fuck the police! I'll choose any game I want regardless of whether or not it fits the criteria!

Gears of War 3. Easily the best multiplayer game this gen. Been playing it with a few mates every week since it released.

Damn. Why do you have to make me choose??

I guess I have to pick Fallout: New Vegas. Bugs aside, it's an awesome game with a large amount of character customization, an awesome setting, a well written story and a great cast of characters.

It would be almost perfect if it weren't for the game occasionally crashing every now and then.

A tie between The Last of Us and the first LittleBigPlanet. The Last of Us is a much better game than Uncharted 2 and is a better produced game than LBP in my opinion, but I'd give the ultimate edge to the first LBP. As good as TLoU, I've played games with similar systems and concepts before. The Last of Us does it better than any of those games, yes, but I've still seen them before.

LittleBigPlanet was something I've never seen or thought could exist before. It sucked up so much of my off-time by myself, friends, and even my parents. Creating levels, playing in someone else's pod, listening to podcasts while creating, playing survival levels online with buddies, DLC costumes and packs, the parodies, music levels, etc. I love that game.

I don't like GTA games that much so the only game coming out for this console generation that may have a chance at topping LBP is Persona 5 if it comes to PS3. Even though it'd be a sequel to my favorite game of all time, I love that series so much that I'd buy whatever system it came out on.

So in closing, I'd give the award so far to LBP as my most important game of this console generation. Best overall game? The Last of Us. Sackboy takes the PS3 and I hope Media Molecule does the same for PS4.

All my favourite games are this gen!
Fallout 3 is on top of course, but closely followed by Mass Effect 3, Skyrim, New Vegas, Borderlands 2 and CoD: Black Ops 1.
Although I've probably put more time into all of those save Borderlands 2 than Fallout 3. I just enjoyed the feel more.

Bayonetta without a doubt. The gameplay set the bar for its genre while the story, characters, and dialog fit perfectly with the gameplay to create the best experience this gen has seen. The dodge offset mechanic was a huge addition to the hack and slash genre and I'm really disappointed that no other games have picked up this mechanic to my knowledge. There are just so many unlockables from weapons to equipment to costumes that just keep you playing this game while giving you different playstyles as well. In this day and age, most games would make stuff like Bayonetta's unlockables DLC.

Metal Gear Online says "Hi" as it stayed old-school (no stupid regen health, no grenade buttons, it had leaning, there were custom game rooms, a level system based on skill instead of experience so matchmaking can actually make even teams, and the skill required to play was unmatched) while being the most innovative online shooter this gen; online shooters just now are starting to borrow ideas from MGO as seen in Ghost Recon Future Soldier, MoH Warfighter, The Last of Us, Gears of War: Judgement, etc. MGO has truly changed online shooters.

Little Big Planet, without a doubt. But, since it seems someone has picked that one already...

L.A. Noire. If you couldn't tell, I love police procedurals. A great example of something that wouldn't have been possible on previous consoles. And it was that rare breed of mainstream AAA game that wasn't obsessed with shooting things.

I want to say something but it is your opinion, so I won't.

most innovative online shooter
MGO doesn't sound that innovative...

OT: I also like Mass Effect 1. And Skyrim, Witcher 2, Bioshocks among others. There were a lot of good games this gen.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

I swear I got over 1000 hours out of it. I must've at the rate I played that game. Perhaps double!

Genuinely surprised Oblivion is beating Skyrim for mentions... I kind of thought it was the dull one that came between 2 amazing games.

Best game of the generation? Maybe Borderlands 2, to paraphrase a review of it, it has 'A co-op so good it could save failing marriages'.

Two words: Dodge offsetting

...and...

Just about every online shooter over the last year+ has borrowed from MGO's SOP system, that's how ahead of its time the game was as it took 4 years for other shooters to start borrowing (the newest Ghost Recon is literally just MGO-lite). The SOP system has changed online shooters for the foreseeable future. MGO even outdid other shooters' main selling point like say Brink that advertised how awesome their physical character customization options were, MGO had better physical character customization than even Brink. Lastly, MGO's in-game Survival and Tournament modes made going to a site like GameBattles completely useless as the game set up everything for competitive players to play each other without needing to go to a 3rd-party.

Actual console game? Tokyo Jungle. It's a lot of fun and quite different from grimdark brown filtered everything else.

Favourite PC game that came out during the current generation? Mount & Blade Warband. If that needs explaining you don't deserve to know.
