Theres plenty of threads about peoples most hated protagonists (what can I say? we all love negativity) so I thourght I might talk about my favorite

Gordon freeman: not my favorite but I like him, I know that alot of people don't like him because of his completlet lack of personality which I can sort of understand but he is still 10x more awsome than master cheif and other generic FPS people

its because he is somewhat unique, a scientist with a goatee who (depending on how you interpret him) his just going from harzard to harzard with no clue of whats going just trying to survive and he kicks ass along the way, I think people can relate to him more and see him as more of a person than master cheif...who is just this Macho manly figure, bland and nothing new there, I also liek chell from portal though in regards to charachter theres less to work with than Freeman, which is why many peopel dont acknowelge her as much which is fair enough I supose

The Boss (Saints row 2): evil, sociopathic and in my case a complete *****, but you can't help love him/her anyway for their crazy antics, s/he not only crossed the line but flew over it several times hitting as many pedestrians along the way

Comander shepard: well female comander shepard in my case, we all know why shepard is awsome

my charachters in Fallout 3/NV and Dragon age (elf who massacres an enitre castle in her wedding dress on her wedding day, nothing more badass than that)

Lady Yuna.
I played Final Fantasy X when I was stationed at Fort Benning, GA. She is still my favorite.

Gordon Freeman from Half-Life, for being badass enough to prevent an alien invasion, cause an alien invasion, liberate an alien invaded species, liberate an alien invaded planet and have a doctor's degree.

Alex Mercer from [Prototype] for being unstoppable, although his personality is meh.

Artyom from Metro 2033 for being willing to take on the whole Metro with nothing but a knife, a revolver, a gasmask and a heavy machine gun that shoots shotgun shell.

Faith from Mirror's Edge, for being a ninja. Could use a bit more characterisation and fluidity in the next game though.

And finally, The Prince from Prince of Persia, Sands of Time and The Two Thrones. Especially the Voice of Sarcasm that is the Dark Prince.

Commander Shepard. Everything can be solved in a most awesome manner by punching it or implementing his/her cutscene pistol of doom

hmm... can't seem to think of many that aren't the product of 1,582 sliders

Lyn from Fire Emblem (7: Blazing Sword), she is the strongest and most kind female game character that I know

The Prince from Suikoden V.

But really, any protagonist with an actual family gets a gold star in my book. Especially when I get the impression that the cute little sister wants a bit more than brotherly love.

My characters from Grand Theft Auto 3, Mount&Blade, Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas. The less some game writer's inserting himself into my motivations for my character, the more I like it.

Not to go off-topic, but I can only get invested in a romance these days if there's some kind of legit obstacle against it. I don't find two schmucks standing around blushing and stuttering whenever they try to admit their feeling particularly enthralling, nor do I care about the token action movie love interest. But with the way people go around wussifying every other half-decent scenario, incest seems to be the only kind of romance that doesn't make me yawn these days. Mainly because no one has the guts to explicitly state it, so you get more subtlety and emotion.

Back on topic, but also on a related note, how could I forgot Ramza of Final Fantasy Tactics? Sister or no, he was everything I like in a lead, and yet I find it so hard to pin-point what exactly I find so enjoyable about him. Same with Ike of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

My self. Meaning I am the good warrior who tries his best to save everyone. But if I must say a named person. DeathSpank. I love him, sure he is a complete moron but he is at least trying to be a good person. Plus everything he says makes me laugh

Garrett from Thief. He's cynical, almost always says exactly what I think and I like rogues.

Lucian, the Divine from Divine Divinity but only there. The character loses his luster in Ego Draconis.

Also Kain, from Legacy of Kain. Both a tragic hero and later, a manipulative bastard.

Guybrush Threewood from the Monkey Island series. He's just so funny and loveable that you can't hate him.

Strelok

Come on, who else do you know who can run through a screwed up and mutant/military/bandid infested russian countryside, and end up killing a small army worth of brainwashed soldiers, aquiring huge volumes of artifacts and guns along the way, and then shooting up the evil group consciousness thing that has been doing all the brainwashing....

and all he starts off with is himself, a leather jacket, and a shitty 9x18mm pistol...who needs superpowers when you can be russian.

Commander Shepard. Female version, because she's voiced by Jennifer Hale. Anyone who could live through something like Akuze is a legend in my books.

Oh god yes. When it comes to people who start with nothing and can still accomplish anything, Strelok is your man.

Also, his knife. I want his knife. It's made entirely of metal.

Play ME2, and instead of romancing Miranda (the token love interest) or Tali (the backup), romance Jack. She's suffered physical and psychological horror, and romancing her is... interesting, to say the least. Do it wrong, and she's gone.

Probably John Marston from Red Red Redemption. He's definitely the strongest developed character I think I've seen in a game... ever...

Gordon Freeman. I like that fact he's silent and quite blank. It's so easy to relate to him.

And most of all, the protagonists I've created myself, as that's what I want to do. I'm not a fan of protagonists that have a preset personality and actions they do themselves. Can't relate to them barely at all.

Yuna from Final Fantasy X. As much as I love Final Fantasy X, I do not believe that Tidus is the main protagonist. He's just there to start the game and make way for the real main protagonist, Yuna.

She may get kidnapped more often than Princess Peach, but she's still determined to get to her goal, even when she knows that she might die.

I will admit, though, that though I don't really like Tidus, the ending made me cry a bit. For those that have played FF X, you know what I mean.
