Being that Halloween is now two months ago and everyone forgot about horror: What is your favorite scary moment in gaming

Mine: The Agropom Tunnels in STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl. The combination of a controller and bloodsucker made it a memorable and scary introduction to the STALKER mutants, for me at least.

That moment when you die and you had not saved your game in the last few hours is easily the scariest moment in gaming.

Probably near the end of FEAR1. I've hardly played any scary games in my life, really. FEAR was the exception. Not sure about when the exact part happened though.

Anytime I am low on ammo, low on health gotten everything and just when I turn a corner I hear a strange echoing "powering up purr" and see fire then launched 50 feet in a random direction. Yeah Doom 2 Archvile

When Steam sales start, and I'm not sure if I'll get my paycheck in time.

EDIT:
Bah, fine. Serious answer.

System Shock 2. The most common enemy type in the game are hybrids. They're the result of an annelid worm attaching itself to a human host and hijacking the person's nervous system. It always bothered the hell out of me that the human host is still conscious and aware of their body's actions, yet unable to do anything to stop themselves from cracking a pipe over your head. The best they can sometimes do is try to verbally warn you with lines like "Hurry, run!" or apologize with an "I'm sorry!" as their hijacked body bludgeons you to death.

On a similar note, the idea of "Stroggification" in Quake II also bothered the hell out of me. Then Quake IV came along and actually showed you the complete process, and it completely lost all horror value to me. My imagination made the process far, far more gruesome.

Amnesia. That first glimpse of one of the creatures.

You're in a basement. You've been hearing footsteps and rustling for a few minutes now. Just as you pick up a puzzle item you hear a long gurgling moan. You turn around and he's just standing there at the end of the hallway. It's dark and murky, so all you can make out is a vaguely humanoid shape, just standing and staring at you.

The labyrinth in Silent Hill 2 with pyramid head wandering around. That place is a freaking nightmare.

Scariest moment? Amnesia. Just all of it.

Most unnerving moment? In Spec Ops The Line when you go to that one room with the heavy and the mannequins. I audibly said "what the fuck".

The dog through the window in the first Resident Evil game. Scared the shit out of my 11 year old self, but I loved it.

Resident Evil 2 for sure. I was preparing for a midnight shift so I made me a pot of coffee and settled down with all the lights off in the house. I was playing as Claire and going through the police station WHEN ZOMBIES TRIED TO GRAB ME THROUGH THE WINDOWS!!!!! I almost messed my pants, too much coffee and lack of sleep made that an epic scary moment.

Half Life, one of the episodes. Near the end of this game I had my flashlight run out of juice while I was fighting for my life. I sat there in total darkness, hearing the skitters of headcrabs, awaiting my inevitable end when suddenly I spotted a sliver of light from across the room as the elevator finally opened. I made a frantic run for it and dived inside. I can't convey in words how scary that was. I don't like the dark.. or headcrabs. :(

I actually have one more to share. It was late and I was playing on my friends Tekkit server for minecraft. The moment I walked outside of his workshop there was no hiss, no warning, just.. BLAMO! this massive rocking explosion that sheered off half the wall of his lab. I survived thanks to some high tech armor but.. that creeper scared the hell out of me. I hate jumpy things like that at 2 am. :(

When Vivendi Universal bought Valve for the purpose of getting their hands on Steam. That gave me chills.

Oh, alright.
Yes I'm an enormous STALKER fan, and I really like the Penumbra/Amnesias.

However, there's only one moment in gaming that actually gave me nightmares.
In FO:NV when you explore the town that Ceasar's Legions have just cleaned up. I went into the town just far enough to see what was going on, and get related garments from one of the houses. I was carrying way too much stuff, and was afraid that there might be combat if I talked to the wolf-head guy. So I stashed a few things in one of the houses and left the area. For various reasons I didn't get back to playing the game for at least a week, but I'm reasonably sure that town left a solid impression on my psyche. Something (that I couldn't remember afterwards) kept frightening me out of sleep several times a night for the next couple of days. To this day I only suspect the link, but I wasn't exposed to anything else that even came close to rating on the Creepy-O-meter.

What is bizarre is that I play DOOM 3/STALKER/Amnesia with all the lights in my room off, and they don't give me nightmares.

Bioshock 2,, I have played Bioshock 1 and defeated the hell out of it on hardest difficulty. I started bioshock 2 on hardest difficulty and the second I first encountered "big sister", I had to take a piss. That fight was absolutely in-fucking-tense.

Regenerators/Iron Maidens from RE4. Screw zombies, I want a whole Resident Evil where those heavy breathing nightmares are the antagonists.

The first time you try to open a chest in Dark Souls, and then realize you have made a terrible mistake.

For an older example, one time I visited a nice little village called Ravenholm.
