The majority of games we play have that level. That level that you love and look forward to with every playthrough.

I got my copy of Darksiders 2 in the post today and started that bad boy up (no spoilers, I promise).

The first level is set in what appears to be mountainous tundra.

Then I realised something.

I fucking love ice levels.

Part of the reason tends to be the soundtrack for these levels.

Here a re a few of my favourites, including the Darksiders 2 soundtrack. If there's one area that game has improved on, it's the music. Mostly down to Jesper Kyd, who's worked on the Assassin's Creed series.

I also love how refreshing these levels feel, thematically, ice levels always feel so clean and crisp, which contrasts the usual greens, browns and greys we usually see in games :D

So guys, what are your favourite level types, if any?

For me, nothing beats Sky levels.
Especially this one actually. My favourite item in Legend of Zelda history is the dual clawshot. Where else is better to use them than in the sky?
I like the extra danger you have to take into account that if you go too far in one direction you're pretty much dead.

Screw ice levels >.>
The enemies are often generic and boring. There's mostly nothing that stands out. Being in the north whenever I play skyrim bores me, there's nothing there.
And phenandra drifts made me stop playing metroid prime for about 3 months...
Bah.

You ride on a sand dragon! In the clouds!
Any level set in the clouds is awesome.

On another note-
Darksiders 2, worth getting?

I'm going to hop on the bandwagon and say that I love ice levels as well.

Also, I quite enjoy levels that take place in a castle/cathedral/other stone building, because they tend to look quite pretty.

Alsox2, the Spirit Temple in Ocarina of Time is one of my favorite levels in any video game ever, so I guess you could count whatever level type it would be classified as as well.

You know, I have to agree. I also like snow and ice environments.

It's one of the things I liked about Skyrim.
One of my favourite things in Skyrim, was the trek to High Hrothgar.

Dat snow :D

A thousand times this. I don't really know why exactly. They just have a sort of lonely/serene/sublime beauty to them (or a quirky christmas/winter festival feel to them).

My Favorites are The Yeti Mansion in Twilight Princess, The second level in Mario 64 (the penguin racing one?), Windhelm/High Hrothgar/The Pale in Skyrim (especially when the Auroras are out), The control Room in the first Halo (both times), and of Course PHENDRANA FUCKING DRIFTS. Phendrana is probably one of the coolest ones. The music, the enemies, and the level design are just awesome. I still listen to the theme song every once in a while on youtube.

I also have a love/hate relationship with snow/ice levels in racing games. I generally love the feel of the level, but they often have annoying "ice mechanics" that make trying to control your vehicle impossible. The levels in the star wars pod racing game for the N64 were some of my favorite in the racing genre.

P.S. I also like Fire levels as a runner-up, though not nearly as much. They're pretty much a very distant second. Magmoor Caverns and the Fire Temple in OoT are the best IMO.

EDIT: Damnit I didn't see you had the theme song as well. Thought it was a video of the level. Oh well a song this awesome deserves twice as much recognition Right? Right? Oh god Imma nervous wreck :(

I loved this temple, But hated the damn Ooccoo. I also hated how the big weapon in it is "You got ANOTHER clawshot Yaaay." <--- Really? That's all ya got :(

It's probably the distinct lack of Snow here in Michigan this time of year :)

All we have have is greenery, pine forests, and mosquitos. Key elements of my third least favorite level type. Forests. I'm out of my element here :/

What weak spot? It's hyper mode! Their only weak spot is me taking the game disc out and breaking it lol.

...I need cheats to get the plasma beam early. They might as well be war wasps with that thing.

Metroid Prime was a great series, we really need something like that again for next gen.

I love ship, train, and aircraft levels most of the time. This is one of my favourites:

This is short but great.

Why? Well, they usually have a logical layout which is easy to navigate, and fun to explore. The exception is container ships, they're pretty boring except for the crew quarters and bridge. I wish there were a good level featuring a detailed modern cruise ship.

I suppose it's weirdness I crave the most. Can't give you a more definite answer than that, I'm afraid.

Claustrophobic levels! In real life I have a natural fear of tight spaces so it's cool to see characters in video games speed through them with ease.
