The only games that I can think of that have women portrayed as strong and usefull and not skanky & thinly clad in whore clothes is Mass Effect (most of the time anyways) and the Half Life series. Is that just sad or am I just not playing the right games?

Eh, it's not a whole lot different that the unatainability of the look prevalent in any other form of entertainment be it movies or music etc.

Conversely, I find Alex from HL2 to be up there on my list of "attractive" video game characters and she's not "skanked up" at all.

The target audience [although this appears to be changing, thankfully] for video games is the 18-35 male. They like tits and guns.
The developers provide. There ARE notable exceptions, though. Which I won't note because I'm tipsy.

For the same reason most average games have you playing as a man on steroids.

Actually not for the same exact reason. By that I meant they do it because of stereotypes.

wow this sucks. I'm not old enough to watch the vid.......well after reading the discription I guess I shouldn't. I think chicks are skanked up in games to generate sales. Oh and you forgot to include Ivy from soul calibur as an example. That oufit is just..........tiny. and it seems her boobs get bigger every game. And just look at how big the franchise is! Also whats up with that cat-woman look the japanese made? Are all japanese game developers a bunch of lonely perverts?!?!?

But truthfully, I really don't buy games based on the amount of tits in the game. If the game is good and fun and it happens to be like soul caliber, so be it.

and I must mention the DOA: extreme series. WTF. seriously. Does that game have any....better yet does that even qualify as a game?

It's because games developers think that men are so shallow they won't buy games with images of real women in. That's ridiculous. And isn't helping those of us who are already worried we won't get a guy because we don't look like a model.
What do you mean real women? I say fuck it, if "real man" is a muscular, witty, funny and heroic tough guy I try to be, then real woman is a supermodel with D cups and and waist no wider than the palm of my hand. Why the double standards? Go the gym.
You really are hoping for an "asshole of the year" award aren't you?
Not just hoping for, he's earned it too.
I think people are being a little harsh on Kukul. He wasnt the most eloquent so Ill try and translate what I see in his post.

Women in videogames are fantasy figures, as are the men. Thats why they have flawless bodies. It works with men too. Check out Chris Redfield. Hes got some guns on him. It doesnt make me envious or think that its the norm.

Its no different than film/TV/cinema which is filled with attractive people with good bodies. Normality is boring, its with you every day. You can go outside to see plenty of average looking people with squashy bodies. The biggest difference is Games dont have actors with physical flaws, no wonder it went one step further.

If you really want that body you can get somewhere close through diet and exercise. Im not "ripped" even though I train martial arts 3 times a week. I could be but it would involve going to the gym every day and eating about 8 meals a day. Its a lifestyle change but possible. Im happy as I am though, Im healthy, fit and slim.

To conclude, not all games are like this. You dont even see Samus's eyes on metroid, never mind a flash of leg/tit. Be happy in your skin, if you dont like what you see, play different games or take it for what it is. Fantasy.

Theres always the gym and healthy eating if your not happy with your appearance. I warn you though, its a change in lifestyle.

Because it's usually men who design games and play them so why not cater the women to fit what the audience wants?

And there are some good female characters you just have to look.

But yeah, slightly degrading but who cares when gaming is supposed to take you away from the reality of decently clad sagging women?

Nintendo is pretty much the only company that made a lasting female main character without making her into a sex symbol. She had a devasting past that hardened her to the point of her being purely a woman of action, with negotiations usually ending with a loss of limbs/life...

well, if you want a game that doesn't show women as sex objects, try STALKER: clear sky. There are no women at all. zero. Either that, or they're pretty manly and all wear gas masks.

My cat is called Jim.
My earthworm has the same name, we have so much in common.

Edit, regardless of gender, most characters are pretty poor in the video game world, the greatest from a story perspective are the non human characters, such as Raziel, the Witcher and dare I say it.... Bowzer.

True many games for the scantly-clad have their place, but I do also wish bosoms would follow real body mechanics at times
(oh and I hear a large reason why breasts droop so much later in life is that women wear bras early in life - reason: the muscle used to hold up the breast doesn't get trained or used when the bar holds it up and thus leads to them drooping later)... so women of the world - go braless please? (hmm how can I make a banner for that without sounding shallow or chauvinistic?)

More like:

Because men ARE incredibly shallow, which is proven by the fact these games tend to be extremely lucrative for the developers, who probably have no idea how a realistic woman may act.

Also, whenever a man says they want to play a woman in a game for "the real female experience"... What they really mean is, "I like lesbians".

Actually if I play a female (when given the choice between male and female) it's because if I'm going to be glued to a game for 20 - 80hrs, I want something I like looking at to keep my eyes focused and the female figure is more appealing than the male one, and that the developers make the females quite ... perfect in scope, even if the male is also 'perfect'..

I don't consider DD breasts perfect actually, I more prefer b cups.
