For those who are fans of metal, what do you think of female vocalists? I'm referring to growling vocals like Arch Enemy.

I honestly haven't heard too many bands that have them, but some of the stuff I have heard sounded decent enough. Honestly though, I prefer female metal singers more akin to Epica or Nightwish. When singing in duets with a gruff metal-sounding man their feminine voices add some awesome contrast. I'm not saying that women can't be good at doing death metal-style vocals, but I vastly prefer when they sing alto/soprano in the midst of metal instrumentals.

Why not?
If they can sing everything is okay.
and since I'm still too stupid to embed the videos have a link to one of my favourite metal bands:

the picture of the vid shows tits just as a sitenote

Edit: And just in case someone says no women can growl like that:

Because that girl is good.
Its too bad the music surrounding it is so bad... >.>

OT: Not really metal, but one of the reasons I like Picture Me Broken is because of the chick's awesome screams.

I'd like to hear some more decent female-fronted heavy bands, screaming or not.

Also, I'd question if you could actually tell this is a female screamer if you couldn't see her in the video:

Love 'em. Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy) is great. She sounds scarier and more aggressive than a lot of male vocalists of that style.

Now I must listen to more Arch Enemy. Thanks for that reminder!

Maria Brink from In This Moment is pretty good too, growly bit quite high pitched too, if that makes sense.

To be honest, most bands with female singers kinda... suck. Not necessarily due to the singers, but the music always seems fairly bland. Bands like Evanescence or In This Moment seem to get by through having a female singer, otherwise they're just sub-par. Except Rolo Tomassi of course, who are awesome. I don't mind Arch Enemy, although I'm not really that into them. Other than that... Harriet Bevan from Black Moth is good, but they're more of a Danzig/QotSA type sounding band than metal.

EDIT: I forgot about Kylesa. Kylesa are fucking brilliant sludgey-psychadelic metal (if you like Mastodon, which you should or you're wrong, you'll like them), vocals aren't really the focal point, but they're still pretty good.

I tried to get into arch enemy, but couldn't. The only song I thoroughly loved by them was "Enter the Machine". I loved Nightwish, but only the Tarja era. Annette kinda made the band lose that trademark nightwish sound.

This thread needs more bands that aren't metalcore.

Like Thorr's Hammer. A band that pretty much proves that death growls are gender-neutral.

Tarja is pretty much a god.

My only complaint (and it's a minor one) is that her accent occasionally makes the words a bit hard to make out, particularly in the early Nightwish stuff. But her range and tonal control usually make me stop caring about silly stuff like words :p

If they can growl/shout/whatever and make it sound good, sure. Though I really like female operatic vocals in like, power metal and stuff. It gives female vocalists more of a unique edge than just being able to do what the boys can.

[Picture Me Broken is post-hardcore. If nothing else, the breakdown gives it away.]

Actually, I could definitely tell if it were a woman without seeing the video.

You can hear it in the growls, because they sound more strained, and not as deep as they would be if it were a man. Emphasis on the strained bit. In my experience, many female metal vocalists are really good at sounding more like actual-facts death rattles, which I'm sure has its value if used correctly. But to me, I don't think they use it correctly.

I think they go best in power metal(A la Dark Moor with Elisa Martin), typically. Women are just better at hitting those high notes than guys. It sounds less screechy and more like actual singing.

I'm not even a metal fan but I really like Nightwish, even their new singer is pretty good.

I don't know too many bands with female vocalists. I do not like Arch Enemy, I think Angela's growls are rather terrible. But that isn't the only reason I dislike the band, I'm not exactly a fan of melo-death in general. A couple of older death/doom bands I enjoy though, namely Derketa and Mythic. They're actually all-female, but the vocals are pretty damn vicious (which is actually a positive term for death metal). I also like Arkona, which is a Russian folk metal band. Their vocalist has a mix of pagan-cleans and decent growls.

That's about it for me, really. I'm not a fan of gothic/rocky stuff either, so things like Nightwish and Within Temptation don't appeal to me. Now on reflection, there are very few females in bands I listen to at all. A shame, really.

Edit: Might as well link something.

Quality of the Derketa song isn't the greatest, but hey, it's demo-level 90's death metal, what would you expect? If you're an extreme metal fan, bad/raw quality shouldn't be much of a problem anyway.

Those're just three off the top of my head. There's stuff like Within Temptation, Nightwish and Lacuna Coil too who are more well known, but those three embedded there are ones i wish got more publicity than they do.

EDIT: Completely forgot about this one

Been a fan of Symphonic metal with female vocalists since I first started listening to metal.

Therion is pretty much my favourite band.
