First of all, the source article:

http://kotaku.com/5632575/twitter-mob-gangs-up-on-square-enix-honcho

Didn't see anything about it here on Escapist, so I'm using the Kotaku link.

Now, to sum it up:

FF13 comes out on the 360 and PS3 everywhere EXCEPT in Japan.
In Japan, FF13 is a PS3 exclusive.
Square Enix decides to put out a 360 version of the game in Japan.
People decide this is a bad thing and start insulting and verbally assaulting the boss of Square Enix.

Can someone please explain this to me? How is this a bad thing? How exactly does this hurt gamers? Why are people getting upset about it?

One idea is that it's the Japanese 360 users who've bought a PS3 just to play FF13 and now feel cheated. However, that makes no sense because why would you buy a console just to play one game? And if you ARE such a big fan of the FF series, why the hell did you buy a 360 over a PS3 in the first place?

The other would be that it's the PS3 fanboys upset about losing an exclusive, but why would that cause rage? They aren't losing anything? And the game hasn't been exclusive elsewhere in the world so any Japanese 360 users could have just imported it.

This makes as much sense as me raging if MS decided to port Fable 2 to the PC after all...

Any insight?

It's people not wanting to let go of an exclusive...

I remember when they demoed FF13 somewhere (can't remember specifics) people booed because it was on an xbox.

This is a good thing for Sqaure Enix! Multiplatform titles are a good thing! People need to stop complaining already!

Stop trying to understand the mind of a fanboy/girl, it will only give you headaches.

I can't [under]stand fanboys on any side, mine or not
honestly, I have friends on other consoles and we both have our exclusives, and sometimes I wish we could share the experiences (cross-platform play??) cuz that's why we game right? to have FUN (well okay there's no multiplayer for FF13 but still)
I don't see how hoarding stuff for yourself and rubbing it into other peoples' faces is good for making friends-oh wait right, gotta uphold the loser gamer no-friends no-social skills stereotype yup

This hurts both my brain and my soul. Why did Square Enix decide it would be a good idea to have FFXIII released exclusively on the PS3 in Japan in the first place?

The answer is obvious, with support for multiple platforms comes the worrying possibility of more people playing the ghastly thing.

They probably did it due to the low penetration rate of the 360 in Japan. However, they must have received some information recently which shows to them that there is a market for the game on the 360. This could mean that the 360 user base is growing, or it wasn?t as successful on the ps3 as they hoped.

Eh, fanatic console fanboys. It's not really worth trying to understand them.

Of course, it's not just consoles. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.230796-Poll-Battlefield-3-to-be-ported?page=1]

I thought there was a lot of pride in Japanese brands in Japan, and the 360 is tainted because of being American.

I'd also be mad that they said one thing and did another. If I owned a 360 or neither of the systems, I'd be irked that I was told to buy the PS3 for that one game if my interest rested only with the 360.

There's your problem, there are none, or close to no Japanese 360 users. The Japanese do not like the 360 at all, it is the least sold this generation and it was the least sold last generation for them as well. They just don't like the games or the hardware, which is why you don't see that many RPGs or anything on it. I dunno why they would be furious about it, but they could probably just see it as a waste

The reaction to this and the news that BF3 will be ported honestly astonishes me. What's the problem with a game being available on more platforms? Surely that can only be a good thing? I know it bugs the hell out of me when I see a really interesting PS3 game I'll never be able to play...

I don't think the reaction has anything to do with it being on the 360. The reaction seems to be more about the fact that Square Enix lied to Japan by saying it was going to be a PS3 exclusive numerous times, then OH WAIT HEY LOOK A 360 VERSION.

Xenophobia. The Japanese are about as bad as it gets.

Some people are just weird, it's more sales for Square Enix, therefore a good thing for the company. What is even the problem? Damn, this is weird.

Ok, but why is that a problem. It would be like me telling you that I wouldn't be getting Bob anything for his birthday and then turn around and get him a gift. Yeah, I lied, but why would that lie make you angry? It didn't affect you.

I know the 360 isn't very popular in Japan, but it must have SOME users since Squeenix wouldn't be putting it out otherwise.

But if you were interested in the FF series enough to buy a console for one single game, wouldn't you have bought a PS3 to begin with? Also, couldn't you just import the english version of FF13 on the 360?

Its the principle of it. Has nothing to do with being affected. People don't like being lied to.

And who wants to bet that those Xbox people are just doubling up, especially the since Japan has just over 47 mil households. There's not a lot of reason to make it souly for the 360 over there. Besides, Japan has a huge source of national pride and the 360 is just an american hack job.

Didn't the Tales of Vesperia fans do the exact same thing when Namco Bandai announced the PS3 version with tonnes of extra content?

As other people have said, I think largely it's the people who went out and bought a PS3 for it, just like how the ToV fans were complaining that they bought a 360 just for ToV thinking it was an exclusive to the 360. Although I don't doubt some will be console fanboys.

That all said I do wonder why they bothered, didn't think enough people in Japan only had a 360 to make it worthwhile. I guess it doesn't cost much to release though, so it wouldn't need many sales for it to be profitable.
