Final Fantasy Versus XIII has yet to enter full production, Square Enix has revealed.

Director Tetsuya Nomura said that only core staff are working on the project, and will soon prepare to enter full production, according to Famitsu (via Andriasang).

Voice recording for the project is "gradually" underway, where scenes featuring the four main characters are being filmed together in the same environment for a realistic approach.

Elsewhere, players will be in full control of the game at all times, even during cutscenes, and that visuals have been teased to look like "real photos".

Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced in 2006 as a companion project to Final Fantasy XIII, which was released last year on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Updates on Final Fantasy Versus XIII have been sporadic, with Square Enix releasing its first trailer earlier this year.

Final Fantasy XIII will be followed up by direct sequel Final Fantasy XIII-2 early next year, which has been partly inspired by Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption.
Is this the new Duke Nukem Forever or does Half Life 3 take that prize? Also Square you announced this game five years ago and have yet to start really making it? Really?

So the only Final Fantasy game that interested me is going to take a while, if at all, to be finished? Oh yay...

Yeah, this sucks.

To be honest, though, I've been caring less and less about this game ever since I found out all the main characters were male. That's a stupid reason to dismiss a game, I know, but you'd be surprised at how good of a reason it is to dismiss a Square-Enix game. I'll still buy it if it turns out to be fantastic, it's just that if it ends up being merely meh-to-okay like XIII, I won't bother.

Type-0, save this franchise please.

Ugh they got their priorities mixed up.

They need to focus on this game and ditch 13-2.

This game seems really interesting, and a bonus to coming out, that means Kingdom Hearts 3 can (maybe?) start production. Why are they bothering with the new 13 which will never please fans, when this game might?

Hey, I'm still crossing my fingers that FFvsXIII comes out on the xBox 360. "They're considering it..." Ugh. Squeenix, you wound me.

That little hope aside, I'm perfectly okay with them taking as long as they want. Better to have them take a while and come out with an awesome game than rush it and have a decent game with a lot of wasted potential (I'm looking at you, Infinite Undiscovery).

I don't see the problem. Say what you like about Square's FF games, but they take their time, and make sure that everything is as perfect as they can make it. They've done this for most FF games, I don't see why they wouldn't do it for this one.
Yes "Perfect" because Final Fantasy is herald as gaming perfection...

Please...

I am GLAD the Squeenix has slowed down production on this franchise, hopefully soon it will be laid to rest peacefully.

Does anyone else realize that XIII, XIII-2, and Versus XIII have pretty much the same development teams? They have to finish XIII-2, then they'll probably get back to Versus XIII. As I stated in the other thread, calm down, they'll get to it soon enough. And no, chances are they won't immediately start work on KHIII, FFXV, or FFXIII-3 after XIII-2 comes out.

Uhhh, actually most of the games in the series had a turn-around ranging from one to two years, with a few notable exceptions. FF7 took three, but it also needed a new engine for a new console from the ground up. 8 then took two, 9 took one, 10 took one. 4 and 5 were both a year apart, too. 6 was two years.

It's only very recently, with FF12 and 13--both insanely troubled productions with ridiculous disputes among staff and lots of last-minute changes in direction that they've started taking more than three years per title on average. Them "taking their time" is less a sign that they're being careful and more a sign that there's tons of in-fighting and that they have no idea what to do.

Nooo. Versus XIII is Tetsuya Nomura's team, who's been inundated with Kingdom Hearts spinoffs for the last ten years--that team being what's left of the original group behind FFX and prior games. XIII and XIII-2 is Motomu Toriyama's team, made up of whatever's left of the XII team, which is responsible for FF Tactics and Vagrant Story. Different groups.

Geez Nomura, Square Enix must really trust you if you're going to spend so much resources on a console exclusive game.

Square Enix has many branches; Hajime Tabata has his own team and they're working on Final Fantasy Type-0; Nomura has the KH team and is working on adding more belt designs on Versus XIII; and Toriyama is working on XIII-2 with his team of newbies, and they're finishing it so quickly because they had a lot of unused crap from XIII. Though they share some people like Kazushige Nojima(and the KH team was taken for a bit to help on XIII), they're mostly different teams created so they could see how they would function using the same lore.

If the teams worked together on one game, it wouldn't take them half a decade to release a single HD game.

They're worse than the grammar, erm (am I allowed to say Nazis? Yeah I think so), worse than the grammar Nazis. At least with those guys you can mostly avoid it by checking your posts. No, if it doesn't make exact literal sense these people will take your head off for it.

OT: I hadn't actually heard of this, on the grounds I only took up Final Fantasy for the brief period between VIII and X-2. From what I can tell through the magic of Google it sounds really good. And I always prefer a game to come late and be amazing than for it to be premature.

I think its going to get even harder over the next few months for japanese companies to be working at full steam anyway, what with the massive losses in money revenue and the ongoing power shortages.

All I can say is, give them as much time as they need, either to get back on their feet or perfect the products they are working on.

No.. I guess it means they were in the "flexible" state where they were free to experiment, think up new ideas as they went. Sort of a creative brainstorming with prototypes.
But now, when the tech, designs and plan is there. They blast-off on all thrusters to make it.
