So since I?ve just read the last issue of Gillens run on Journey into Mystery (which is great and you should read it even if you don?t like superhero comics. Just so long as you don't mind tragedies because damn is it depressing underneath all the humour) and it?s the first work of fiction too actually really upset me to the point where I feel like crawling into a ball and crying in years I figured I ask the escapist...

What?s the last time a story has got you really emotionally invested or provoked a strong emotional response from you? Anything really, happy, sad, angry (although I would rather this did not turn into a ME3 hate thread).

Ignoring the ending, ME3 was an emotional rollercoaster.

So many man tears were shed.

Seashells man, seashells.

*sniff*

Journey was another one, but for completely different reasons. Fucking beautiful game.

A lot of emotional films and games and books have affected me. I'm pretty easy, that way.

Off the top of my head, A Fine Balance made me want to kill myself...

On the anime front, 5 Centimeters per Second, Amagami SS, Sora no Otoshimono, Toradora, Kaichou wa Maid Sama, Oreimo, and Neon Genesis Evangelion (Although for completely different reasons than the rest).

And then there's a few novels and movies which have illicited some sort of emotional reaction from me.
It's pretty easy for it to happen though.

Anime front it's really only King of Thorn. Watch the movie. Do it. //sniff

Video game front it's inFamous 2 (the good ending) Kingdom Hearts && That one part in Gears 3. You know what I'm talking about.

Movies/TV..The Hurt Locker was a big shot to my feels, so was a few scenes in Avatar. I don't cry alot, so it's hard to think of things :p

Weapon by John Christopher [http://lib.mn/blog/john_christopher/178374.html]

I just love that short story. My favourite one, actually. Although, I don't think it's an emotional investment, or at least not one I can describe - I just get chills down my spine from how awesome the story is.

The ending to Odd Thomas really hit me hard. I'm usually pretty good at figuring the ending of books long before I get to it but I did not see it coming. It depressed me the rest of the day.

Journey is the only one that comes to mind at the moment. I was on the snowy level with someone I'd travelled the entire game with, and he got hit by one of the monsters and went flying somewhere.

I ran around looking for him for ages, and then thinking that he'd died or something I carried on by myself feeling sad. I soon noticed a figure in the distance, and it was awesome when he sang and it showed the same logo as before, so he hadn't died.

I know you cant die in Journey, but that was my first playthrough and I didn't know that.

Evangelion Neon Genesis was great, I really appreciate Shinji and his struggle, I went through depression as well and it was erie in how Shinji's thoughts mirrored many of my own.

Arguably one of the best slice of life anime/manga to ever exist. It got me into music and changed my perspective on life. I still watch it from time to time whenI need to pick myself back up, and when I re-watch it, I re-watch the whole thing because it is just that good.

I think The Talisman was the first ever fiction to make me cry. Helped that I was 10 years old at the time.
Stuff like Up as well. Lots of my favourite games, too. Persona 4 and Nier stand out like this.

Saya no Uta, Katawa Shoujo, and Steins;Gate impacted me pretty strongly. The latter definitely made me cry at more than one point, whilst the former changed my perception of reality a bit. Saving Private Ryan and A.I. are two others. A few Final Fantasy titles come to mind.

Jurassic Park makes me cry tears of amazement. It's such a brilliant concept.

I cry over existential questions, sacrifice (MANLY TEARS), and the immovable distance of space and time. And maybe occassionally a tragic story which turns out good in the end.

Fionavar Tapestry, has evoked the strongest emotional reaction from me of any piece of literature.

And despite multiple times reading the series it can still strongly affect me. A truly beautiful piece of fiction.

Dark Souls made me appreciate the value of life like crazy. What? It's true. Die over and over again enough, and you start appreciating the value of your journey in this world where everything wants to violently end you.

For fiction that has gotten a reaction out of me (I'm pretty emotionally salty for the most part), I'd have to say the concept album Scenes From A Memory by Dream Theater. It is the only album that I can listen in one go and get any sort of reaction: pure shock. Go listen to the album if you want to know why.[footnote]Spoilers? Pffffffffffff. LIsten to the whole thing and be amazed.[/footnote].

Another would be Nana to Kaoru. It's ecchi, but still, damn some of the scenes with character development actually got a reaction out of me[footnote]Don't get too smug, Amazune Ryuta. I think it's because I have a thing for BDSM.[/footnote]. I would highly recommend it.

And of course, the only piece of fiction that has ever truly touched me and made me feel a true emotion[footnote]The others only scratched the surface of my emotions.[/footnote] is the song Space Dye Vest by Dream Theater. I don't know, I remember my girlfriend like crazy after I listen to it and have cried a few times by the end of it. Such a powerful song, especially since I have an event to relate to it.

Aww man I had forgotten about that ending :( So very ridiculously sad.

I'd say the Dark Tower series by Stephen King were pretty bad for that. I remember crying through the entire last book every time I read it - up to four now, I believe(yeah, I know, I'm a baby).

On the other hand, Terry Pratchett's The Last Continent always manages to get a giggle out of me, no matter how many times I've read it.

Spec Ops: The Line.
If you play through that and it doesn't effect you... I don't know. It even got to Yahtzee.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/6021-Spec-Ops-The-Line

A very effective gut-punch, and the overall feel of the game as the characters match the feelings of the player, I almost found myself getting sick playing it, I found myself feeling really icky about playing shooters for a good while afterwards.

Captcha: don't tase me ...wow, if that had a "bro" at the end, it would've won for best ever.

Fight Club made me stronger emotionally. It also helped me not give a fuck about the little things. In Tyler we trust.
