Heya! Long time lurker, first time writer! :D

Im Rem *waves*, im currently studying 3rd year of Game Art/Illustration & Animation at University, so of course that means the compulsary dissertation essay ¬_¬ which brings me to write on the forums ^^

I'm writing a dissertation on Film and Video game remakes and i need to get some opinions and research to help me write it.
This is where i hope you guys (and girls) can help me!!

What do you think are good remakes? Which are bad? And why do you think the film and video game companies continue to make them? Feel free to discuss them too ^^

Any opinions are highly welcome!! i'll give you free cookies.

Many many thanks

Rem

Well I rather liked the remake of Halloween because it did what a remake should do and took an alternative look at the original's premise and made a story about a killer and his psychological profile. I would argue a remake is only needed if there is something worth remaking and only if you do it differently and offer a new view on it.

Also... WELCOME TO THE ESCAPIST.

Why do they make them? More money to squeeze money out of a franchise. If the original was successful why wouldn't a bigger and shinier remake. And the occasional desire to actually better the original.

Edit: And welcome!

example of a good remake: 2D Mario. Case and point: New Super Mario Brothers (wii).

example of a bad remake: Sonic The Hedgehog 2006.

well, a good remake needs to be like its "father". same gameplay, same genre, etc etc. but it can get even better by adding something new to the mix, a new mechanic or something.

a bad one is unlike its predecessors, by switching dimensions, shitty new mechanics and being underdeveloped (lots of bugs, glitches and such).

i dont have much knowledge on the subject, buti hope this can help you, mate.

and by the way, Welcome to the Escapist :D please dont feed the troll.

Nice welcome...
Welcome to posting then.

I think that remakes can be good if they are true to the source or significantly increase the playing power of the game in the modern generation without damaging the core.
Former example -Banjo Kazooie on the XBLA - It highlights the good games to those who have not had the benefits of being able to play those games when they were readily avaliable (another example, Chrono trigger)
Latter example- Space invaders (Extreme (XBLA) or infinity Gene(ITouch))- This brings the core gameplay and significantly upgrades it to make it a fresh and enjoyable experience.

An example of a bad game remake is Bomberman Zero. Just put that in wiki and you will get what i mean.

With movies, i can only think of the recent horror slasher remakes. They are crap for not being fresh, just a kill fest, like always.

The Companies do it for money, larger fanbases, for the fanbases and because they have no better ideas. Among a few reasons.

The game can't just be ported with better graphics (although I liked Conker: Live and Reloaded), but needs a bit of reinvention to liven up the gameplay.

Effectively, Christemo is right on the money.
