Film sequels that were better than the first

What are some film sequels that you thought were better than the first one?

For me it's Shrek 2. I loved Shrek 2 so more than Shrek 1.
And Jennifer Saunders' cover of Holding out for a Hero was my favorite bit of the film.


Oh and Terminator 2 and Empire Strikes Back.

Hmmm, most of the ones I had in mind have already been mentioned (Terminator 2, Aliens, X2 & Dark Knight), so I'll just drop the Bourne Supremacy which I preferred over Identity.

The Empire Strikes Back was CLEARLY better than Star Wars. Lucas not writing or directing it probably had a lot to do with that.

Aliens wasn't necessarily "better" than Alien but it was more kinetic and writ on a grander scale than the first film, without any discernible drop in quality, which is quite an achievement.

The original Terminator is far, far superior to the sequel.

Hmm, i may get flak for this but Lord of the Rings Two Towers. From a movie standpoint it was better than The Fellowship imo, mostly due to the increased action.

Edit:Im not dissing The Fellowship though it was still an epic film.

I actually felt that The Two Towers was a lot more tedious than the Fellowship of the Ring, despite the battles.

The third film of LOTR was the best, in my opinion. I've always preferred Return Of The King to both of the others, though all were damn fine films. Also, I may attract a lot of flack for this, but I felt that each Matrix film was better than the one before. Believe it or not, I think they improved with each one. Plus, I actually like all the philosophical 'bullshit' that make them up, so yeah...
