Title says it all. I believe that FF9 had the best music of any game in the FF series. Agree, disagree, or somewhere in between, please let me know your opinion on this statement.

Yep I agree. I would say FF7 is a very close second, and if the audio quality was as good as 9's then I'd consider them equals.

Final Fantasy XIII has the worst music.

I will agree, Final Fantasy IX has some amazing music, some of which I generally listen to on repeat a lot. However, I don't think it's the best Final Fantasy music out there. Really the best comes from personal experiences and tastes, so there isn't really a "best" soundtrack out there for the series. For me, I loved Final Fantasy XII's score a lot, and would say that it is tied as being one of my favorites along with Final Fantasy X's score. Really it just depends on my mood for the day. Do I want a calming, religious sort of feel like how Final Fantay X's soundtrack gives, or do I want an Imperial-esque feel that FF XII, and subsequently IX, gives.

Either way...I now want to go and play a Final Fantasy game, thanks OP. :3

I can't say I remember the soundtracks of any of the Final Fantasy games I've played. I tend to find soundtracks in JRPGs to be forgettable. It all kind of flows together...

This thread is just a statement of fact.

Didn't we have another Final Fantasy music thread recently?

Oh well.

Right you are, the composer himself would also agree with you, as he sees the score as his magnum opus.
You can always guarantee that at least one of us will appear in these threads. XD

No. FFIV remains the best, despite the poor quality of the instrumentation. Followed closely by FFVI.

Make that three. I came here to say exactly the same thing and then post my favorites. I do wonder if Nobuo still considers it his best work tho as it was 15-16 years ago now so I would be interested to find out if he thinks anything since then matches or suppases it in his eyes. I still think it is the best he has ever done but he did compose some great music for Lost Odyssey so I wonder how he sees it compared to his past works.

Or maybe I am the only one who would be interested in knowing such things. Who knows.

'You Are Not Alone' and 'Rose of May' are amazing pieces and some of the best tacks in the series. However, it pains me to admit that I found the rest of the soundtrack to be 'meh' at best. Keep in mind that I consider FF9 the best in the series.

A fair statement; I find it hard to fully oppose that. I absolutely love "Rose of May" and "You're Not Alone" & "Jesters of the Moon" is great.

FFX had some amazing pieces too though (To Zanarkand, Suteki Da Ne, Seymour's Battle, Yuna's Ballad) as did FFVII (Bombing Mission, One Winged Angel, Aerith's Theme, Price of Freedom if it counts).

Disagree, for me only 2 Final Fantasy OSTs has a permanent place in my ipod in their entirety and it's Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2.

I really can't pick one game as having the best soundtrack. Pretty much every game from 4 to 10 has songs I consider being amongst my favourites. Although I wouldn't rank FFIX's soundtrack that highly for myself, not because it's bad but because I didn't make it far enough into the game to experience a lot of it.

The two that have really stuck with me are

and

And although I didn't reach this part of the game, when I heard about the reimagining of Castle Pandemonium from FFII I had to check it out. I was not disappointed.

I quite like some tunes from FFIX but VII is the one I listen to the most by far but thats because I love and have played the game so much I also remember VI and X having some great tracks cant really remember much about the others music wise off the top of my head.

There is no best its all subjective but for me VII has the best soundtrack things like Aeris theme and One winged angel are classics in fact I remember hearing something about Aeris Theme being voted in the top 100 top classical tracks of all time on classical FM which amazed me did not even know people who listened to that station would play games for the most part think it got to 49 or something as well. (note could not be arsed to look up actual facts so may be a bit off).

It's just too bad that FF9 was a crap game and as such it's soundtrack was - by default - crap as well.

Now this person...

...this person speaks the truth of the matter. The only bit where Scow is wrong is that even in it's original 16bit glory, FFIV's soundtrack was breathtaking.

For a site that universally hates Final Fantasy and is actually on professional board (Sterling and Ben's jobs) to dismantle Square Enix, I wonder why there are these positive threads every once in a while. That aside, I generally love Final Fantasy music; it's a default highlight for any FF game.

Oh, you silly troll you.
Because god forbid I found that game so incredibly dull and boring that I couldn't be arsed to play passed the first disc. Oh wait, that's exactly the case.

I have seen very little hate for Final Fantasy here. What I have seen is hate for the direction that Final Fantasy has taken. You will notice that the majority of posts in this thred are talking about old FF games that were made by SquareSoft not Square Enix. There is a difference. SquareSoft gave use everything upto X. Square Enix has given us J-pop (X-2), bad Star Wars rip off (XII) and just plain bad (XIII).
