Final Fantasy Origins: Stranger in Paradise is a very strange Remake of the original Final Fantasy game on the NES. Developed by Team Ninja the developers of Nioh, they've taken a new direction for the Remake of this classic turn-based RPG. They made it a Nioh game. SoP is best described as Nioh but wearing Final Fantasy pants, the whole game is based off the framework of the Nioh games, with intense action based combat at the very core of the system. But other things like the mission layout on a world map, main missions, side missions, the way cut scenes happen. It's all pretty much Nioh.

So what I'll do from here is explain how the game is different from Nioh in terms of the combat.

First of all High, Med, and Low stance with weapons is gone and instead is replaced by a job system which is very Final Fantasy based. Essentially different weapons have different jobs assigned to them for example Great Swords make you a warrior and a Mace makes you a Mage. It's much the same way the system works in FF14. You can loadout your character Jack, to have two jobs equipped at one time, including two full sets of different gear (which i'll touch on in a second). During the missions you can tap Triangle to instantly swap between jobs allowing for you to open a fight by casting a big Mage spell which stuns all the enemies, instantly swap to warrior and charge in to smash them while they are still down. It flows exceptionally well and there are quite a few job classes in the game (at least 8 in the early game).

Every job also has a skill tree which unlocks combos and buffs for that job, some of these skill trees even unlock additional jobs like Palladin. At it's core it's similar to Nioh in the sense of leveling your skill with a weapon which unlocks more skills with that weapon. Functionally it's the same thing but with a Final Fantasy coat of paint. Each job plays drastically differently as well, a lancer will move and attack and combo differently than a duelist or monk. There is no shortage of combat options I feel which is good, though the jobs do level seperately so I feel like there will be a bit of grinding involved throughout the game to make each job viable for whatever mission you happen to be on.

Then there are the item drops which constantly rain down after every enemy kill, like Nioh. Jake the main character can equip two sets of full gear at the same time for job swapping. But you also have three companions that you can gear up as well, though I'm not sure if they can change jobs yet. Of the three companions you can bring two with you into a mission. It's like playing Nioh Co-Op with AI partners that are not super smart but they distract badguys and that's enough. They chat with you during the missions which keeps you company during longer dungeons so that's actually pretty nice.

However I have to say that this game is fucking ugly. Like the graphics are bad and there is this weird bad aliasing effect over everything. During gameplay it's fine, but cutscenes are hard to watch not only because they are cringy as fuck, but they are also terrible looking. After a couple of missions I noticed that the characters all wear whatever gear you put them in during the cutscenes so maybe it's a problem with having the cutscene models being dynamic to reflect all the gear possibilities in the game. Even still, it's terrible looking for a game in 2022. There is also an excessive bloom effect everywhat that is also quite dogshit.

That being said, they are adding the cringiest story to a game that didn't really have a story so that's a thing.

The other interesting thing about this game as opposed to the Nioh titles. Strangers in Paradise has difficulty options, four of them Story, Easy, Normal, and Brutal. I guess this is to give a buffer to Final Fantasy players who might not have ever played anything like Nioh or Dark Souls before. I would suggest playing on Normal at minimum because anything easier might as well be a walking simulator with how much of a fight the enemies put up. Brutal is exactly what it says and it's nasty. Many of the enemies have poor attack telegraphs making reacting a bit harder than in other action games, and on brutal some of the boss attacks are instant across the screen bullshit. So I'm sure people will have fun with that.

On the whole the game has promise as a fun Final Fantasy themed action game. However i think the story and the characters are not worth paying attention too unless you like self inflicted torture.

Maybe. The dialog is amazingly bad lol. It's everything people memed on and more. But the action itself is prettyfucking great tbh. Not only that but the finishers are sick as well. It's a very cathardic game especially after Elden Ring, just being able to fuck shit up is a great release.

I'll wait for a sale. Right now I'm still going through some other games, and this looks like it can wait. Thank you though for the honest opinion.

I wouldn't be shocked to see this game get a free PS+ release sooner than later tbh. While i think it's still a lot of fun, it does feel like a throw away game in a lot of areas.

That sound like a pretty big deal breaker to me, I couldn't finished Nioh 1 for the constant inventory shuffling. If I have to deal with 4 sets of gears on top of that, no way.

Why are they so obsessed with loot bonanza? They've copied everything else from the soul franchise, why not important its far better loot system?

Mostly because of the Diablo-like influence. At the core, Nioh is a dungeon running action RPG much like Diablo in a lot of ways, and thus the shitloads of loot. I personally like the diablo style loot with souls-like challenge.

This game has togglable challenge, which arguably makes it worse because it removes all danger from the combat and makes the game feel even mroe disposable.

I watched that and then had to watch the trailer just to verify. So basically the trailer gives away one of the big reveals(I assume) right off the bat by having him say " My name is Jack GARLAND!" with all the connotations that go with that and why not I guess? Apparently there's some other stuff going on as well that throws a bigger twist into the works but the whole telegraphing that the main character is the bad guy from FF1 is just...wierd?

Maybe I'll pick the game up on sale to give it a go in all it's Cheesiness. Though right now I'm more interested in Triangle Strategy from SE and if ER hadn't just come out I'd probably be playing it right now.

You know the more I play, and experiment with the different classes, the better the combat gets. The game is a shit load of fun and the final fantasy monsters are awesome to fight. This game is simply fucking really good. It's a shame that the cinematics look like dog vomit and the dialog is unbelievable cringe. Otherwise this would easily be a GOTY contender. But I feel like it will end up criminally overlooked.

Coming out so close to elden ring probably doesn't help either.

I said this like 6 months ago. Late Winter and Early Spring could be readily seen to be stacked with big releases as far back as Fall 2021. And for whatever reason, nobody thought to move their releases in or out a little bit for more breathing room JUST in case. So of course, they all get overshadowed by one or two big games, in this case the game that built an incredible amount of hype by literally saying nothing for 2 years. I mean, sure, there were jokes about how incredibly anticipated ER was and when it ended up getting a ton of accolades it felt strangely approps but still, apparently everyone thought "Yes, let's put our game up against every other big game coming out in the same early few months of 2022. It'll be fine".

I mean, I kinda get when this shit happens in the fall because everyone is trying to get that end of year press for the game awards and of course the XMAS rush, but having the pileup in spring feels so fucking wierd.

I think the pile up is just because so many game end up getting delayed from the busy fall season and all naturally end up now. I can imagine they all shoot for october/november but get delayed 6 months and boom busy march/april. The worst is I beat they'll be a major drought in the summer.

Oh well, maybe by then the game will come on steam and I'll try it, I hate the loot but I generally like class system.

We all knew Feburary was going to be a bastard because everything got delayed but still needed to land in Q4.

The loot system is pretty bad here. It's bad in Nioh but Nioh at least provided a lot of build options through the gear. In this game you just equip the highest level shit you get and don't think about it much beyond that. It's really a shame and probably exists because it's clearly using the Nioh engine and it makes at least some sense to include. It just could have been done better. Which is kind of a theme for this game.

"Stranger in Paradise: Final Fantasy - It could have been done better."

Technically i think March is also Q4, Q1 2022 begins in April IIRC
I keep forgetting fiscal quarters are shifting like 90 degrees from the end of the calendar year, or more accurately, align much more closely to the end of winter and beginning of spring then the calendar year.
