Ok so before I even BEGAN to think about watching the Advent Children movie, I watched the Final Fantasy VII: Reminiscence feature which is all the cutscenes in the game spliced together to make a coherent plot of what happened before the movie. There were some genuine surprises for me since I had never played the game, but I won't name them here. I won't even name the one that WAS spoiled for me by an internet meme (no, I won't) because there exist people who have NOT PLAYED Final Fantasy VII or experienced it in any way, shape or form.

I mean, this is the freaking Watchmen of J-RPGs it seems. You've got yourself an evil conspiracy just like Watchmen, you've got scientists, just like Watchmen, but instead of superheroes there's a bunch of young heroes who are struggling to survive in Midgar. And I haven't even watched the Advent Children movie yet because I had to have dinner first. Also like Watchmen the art is a bit dated but the story is compelling as hell.

So has anybody watched, or intends to watch, the Advent Children movie?

It was certainly the most impressive CGI movie I've ever seen. The fight sequences blew me away. You would almost definitely have had to play the game beforehand though, or at least know the storyline. I've also played FFVII: Crisis Core and it has some cutscenes of equal quality in terms of graphics, which really makes the most of the PSP's power.

Well I never played FF7 but the movie was alright. The fight scenes looked good but I thought the film lacked character development but this is probably due to that happening in FF7. Overall I think you need to have played FF7 to appraciate it fully but it is still worth a watch.

I really enjoyed it. Its over-the-top and has a lot of filler but the ending had a lot of emotional weight for me. If you care about the characters you should feel the same. You really should check out FFVII at some point. I play through it once every year :)

I watched the movie, end thought the animation(especially the fight scenes) were incredibly well done.

I liked it so much, I actually played FFVII. I found, when i re-watched it, I picked up on a lot of little things that were, like, really deep that you wouldn't get otherwise.

Definently a good movie. (Keep an eye out for Tifa's fight, my fave)

I really wanted to see those movies, but people say they are shit. Then, Degeneration came out and now my list is still too full to get any movies for now. I should get Advent Children, but I am not so sure about Degeneration...

Oh, well. Maybe someday...

Dammit why is it so hard for Square to get Final Fantasy VII on the PSN? I can't figure out how to get the ROM to work on my PC so I am screwed.

RE Degeneration is a fairly acceptable film. I really enjoyed the first half or so of it, it really felt like a RE game... especially in the airport. However they tried to make a freaky biological weapon twist creating an uber enemy that happens in every game, which seemingly ruined it for me. I understand what they were trying to do but it just didn't seem like it fit very well.

I have the DVD, I haven't even played FFVII (want to though), so the Reminescence thing was really useful for me. Plus I printed off a synopsis of the game which I keep in the DVD case with the film ;) No spoilers for me because my friend spoiled stuff anyway, and the major spoilers are ones everyone knows in the vein of The Sixth Sense, Star Wars and Citizen Kane.

Yeah, really good film, anyway, and I reckon the CGI is really good. Especially since one of the only reasons The Spirits Within bombed was because it was too close to the Uncanny Valley, otherwise that was a pretty decent film too :)

I've got to disagree with you there, the uncanny valley definitely didn't help, but spirits within wasn't a very good movie on the whole IMO. the voice acting wasn't great, the quality of the animation dropped as the movie progressed, and the story-line was pretty weak.

Mother: "I saw a Final Fantasy movie at the video store, so I rented it."
me: "The other Final Fantasy movie you saw was an original story, this one is based on a game. It will probably be very confusing..."

*hilarity ensues*

Really, though, it was one giant, confusing, "WTF." I didn't really enjoy it, other than a few mindless action sequences.

The movie was good in terms of spectacle. It was REALLY AWESOME when it came to just that over the top fast action thrill, that it nailed. Where it fell on it's face is the underdeveloped story (which I heard the re released blue ray *with extra footage* sorta fixes). Seriously, the movie was entirely unnecessary because the game ended perfectly, it had enough catharsis but still left some imagination which made the ending so...memorable. Then came this movie....which was just fan service and expanded on a story that didn't need to be extended. The movie had potential, but it fails in my books, and just degrades to something you watch when your bored...like DBZ or something.

If they had put more effort into a better story it could have worked but as far as I am concerned FF7 ended the second you see the RED13 and his cubs gaze down at the ruins of Midgar.

I agree, Nanaki was my fav character from FFVII. But the reason they didnt give him more lines or put him in the movie more, was because animating his fur cost too much and was too time consuming. Same reason why he wasnt in Dirge of Cerberus.

Edit: Love Tifa's fight. she does about 3 or 4 of her limits in it. But i think the Bahumut or Sephiroth fights take the center stage

My wife got by just fine without having palyed the game.
She bought it(Advent Children) straight out when she saw it on a shelf, on the sole bias that i have always said FF7 is what got me into gaming.

Totally agree. Even though I've already finished it I'd play it again.
ZOMG, with trophies too!
