A friend asked me this a few days ago and I cannot deside between 9 and X. I love them both. As games I love 9 slightly more than X for two reasons. 1. ViVi and 2. 9 did not force me to play a unbelievably bad sequal just to get the cliché happy ending I wanted.

Now I do not mean the best piece of music, I mean the FF with the best music overall. For example as much as I love One Winged Angel I think FF 9 and X have better music overall than 7. Feel free to post your favorites through.

Ok 9 wins but only just. Nobuo has said in the past that the music for Final Fantasy 9 is his best work. I have to agree.

I'd have to go with 9. I've thought about this topic a lot and took some reflection to say 9. My favorite song of all Final Fantasy is You're Not Alone. Not only because the music itself but the part of the game it represents.

I will always prefer FF6's music, though it does improve greatly when played with actual instruments.

Agreed. For many people, FF6 convinced everyone that Final Fantasy's music was one of the best.

When played with real instruments, it clearly shows its awesomness.
From "The Black Mages", the band of Nobou Uematsu, composer of all the FF music.

Not the best, but 13 actually had a really good soundtrack. Too bad it kinda gets overlooked since nobody liked the game itself.

But I think I might be obligated to go with 6.

What... am I... am I in before Final Fantasy VII? YES!

Now, I despised Final Fantasy XIII with... most of my heart, but even I have to give the soundtrack some credit.

Now, for me? VII is the most memorable, because it's the one I played through the most, but I think IX outdoes it as it did with most other things. IX was a damn masterpiece.

As the music is presented in-game, then FF IX. But FF VI, maybe if you just take the Black Mages' version. I guess since Mr Umetsu is Japanese, I shouldn't criticize him for not knowing that the plural of "Mage" is "Magi."

Anyway, the games all have great music. Too bad that since Mr. Sakaguchi left, the games themselves have been terrible.

I do really like "You're not alone" from FF9 but none of the other music really did it for me. The battle theme was particularly unimpressive, and you hear it constantly, along with the dull world map music.

Nothing beats FF6, simply for how excellent all the character themes are.

Final Fantasy 9, even the composer Nobou Uematsu claims it is his favorite.

FF does have some of the best music in all of gaming, even people who don't like the series cannot touch the music.

On a related note, everyone with a 3DS, GET THEATRYTHM!
I never really got to listen to the music from the early FF games, like FF1-6. Never even got to play them. However I do now have a GBA emulator that allows me to play the GBA versiona of all of them(excluding III, which I have the Android/iOS version of installed on my tablet) and Theatrythm Final Fantasy has taught me something about the Final Fantasy series:

I hate every single remix of every single song from FF1-6. After I listened to them on Theatrythm(and on the interwebz for the ones that weren't featured on that game), I went on to listen to the remixes. And I've decided I hate them all. The originals will always sound better to me.

That said, I don't really think any of them have the "best" soundtrack. I think they all have awesome soundtracks in different areas. Some of my favorites are the overworld theme for FF and FFIII, Battle with Gilgamesh and Home Sweet Home for FFV, Man With the Machine Gun for FFVIII, Battle 1 for FFIX and Battle with Seymour for FFX. All of which are awesome songs.

One last note: I greatly agree with TizzytheTormentor. If you have a 3DS and you're anything of an FF fan, you WANT Theatrythm Final Fantasy!

Ok I just want to say that this post with these songs has totally made my day. Nostalgia boner indeed... To me, FF9 always seemed to unfold like a play. It's like each environment was a carefully constructed set and the players merely actors (which totally fits with the acting motif :p). The music totally added to that feeling imo. No other game before or since has managed to capture that unique attribute. God dammit I love FF9!

Gilgamesh's theme is called "Clash on the Big Bridge," and it's easily one of the best battle themes in the entire series, and the Black Mages version is awesome.

I think each game has at least one piece to add to a best of Final Fantasy music collection.

Yeah, I know. I see a different title for it everywhere I go, though. Long as people know what I'm talking about, right? :p

Annnnd I really didn't like the Black Mages remix. :s I didn't like any of the remixes. The one they made for FF13-2 was okay, but I still prefer the original.

You want some great remakes of Final Fantasy songs? Look up Kate Covington or Katethegreat19 on Youtube.
Girl can sing. Girl can sing very well.
EDIT: Plus I really love the XIII-2 version of Clash on the big bridge.

Is there anywhere you can buy an album of FF6 songs done by The Black Mages like that one?

Also, perhaps a version of The Red Wings song from FF4?
