As the title says. Me and my group of friends (around 5 of us) used to have a great time on Dota, with each of us clocking nearly 1000 hours on it each. Unfortunately some of us are beginning to find Dota not fun anymore and we are looking for a replacement game, that we can all play together to fill that gap, there are a few exceptions to games that people will refuse to play.

Rules:
No more Mobas
Not WoW (or WoW like MMOs)

As a side note I'm interested in how fun it is to play Eve Online in a small group if anyone has any experience.

So escapists, can you find me a game?

Unreal Tournament. You just can't go wrong with Unreal Tournament. My favourite's 2004 but the original is just as good. UT3 is a bit slower-paced but it's not a bad game either.

The Borderlands series is fun with 4-player co-op but it's a matter of taste. Some people hate it, some people love it.

Planetside 2 is a good MMO if you're up for that kind of thing. There are opportunities for some absolutely epic scenarios. It's an FPS rather than swords and sorcery RPG so it's nothing like WoW.

All of my online multiplayer experiences have been with FPS games so I apologise if there's not a lot of variety in my suggestions.

Insurgency is a great tactical shooter, if that's your thing. It has pVp and co-op game modes as well.

If you're into non-Moba RTS, there is StarCraft 2 and its wide variety of custom maps you can play for free (don't need to buy the game, just download starter edition).

Battlefield 2 if you can get hold of copies has some fantastic mods to play co-op. Project Reality 2 and Forgotten Hope 2 are great fun playing against the bots with a small group of friends.

Well, since mobas and RTS games share a lot of similarities, I say try out Supreme Commander. The thing that makes this RTS more like a moba is that your starting unit is a lot like your hero unit in a moba. It would be a good jumping off point to moving onto other genres.

There are A LOT of shooters out there theses days. Games like Borderlands and UT are great suggestions, but there's even more if none of those scratch your gaming itches. Valve alone offers Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2. One of my personal favorite shooters is the Sanctum series, since it blends FPS with tower defense.

You could also jump on a hack 'n' slash RPG like Path of Exile or diablo 2/3. Torchlight II and Titan Quest: Immortal Throne are great too. Like RTS games, they offer a similar experience to mobas that if your friends are looking for something new without a huge jump in change, it would be a great start.

Edit: that ended up being a word wall. Going to bold the game titles.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Guild wars 2 if you want an mmo with no monthly fee and a good action feel. War Thunder is also a really good free to play flight sim and tank sim, I hear they are adding ship battles at some point too.

Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod. Because we need more games with magical asses that create parachutes with grappling hooks.

Warframe: Good 4-man online Third Person Shooter with space ninjas . A bit grind-heavy, though.

Vindictus: Beat-em-up that's a story prequel to MMO Mabinogi. Once again, a little bit grind due to quest drop stuff, but has good action and HUGE bosses.

Risk of Rain: 2D shooter that is crazy hard, with rougelike elements. Already hard on it's own, but add more players to the mix......

Aside from those games, I suggest TF2 Mann vs Machine mode and Killing Floor.

Eve is very very difficult to get into for new players.

It takes many years worth of time to get to the end game.
It is a great game but one you play for the long haul.

Freelancer, Elite dangerous, Star citizen( still in alpha) are far more welcoming in for a space game.

I'd suggest Gauntlet, personally. Four players at a time, but it's a fun romp just wading your way through hordes of squishy monsters with your friends.

Local or only online?
Because if you want local multiplayer then buy yourself a WiiU, get smahs bros, nintendoland and mariokart and you're good to go!

For online stuff I got nuthing, if you didn't want MMos, otherwise Lotro would be a nice one to start with.
