I like making threads. <_< Don't judge me.

This probably applies more for console gamers than PC, though if you PCers have any similar experiences to share, by all means. :3 I'm in my early 20s, which means I spent a healthy chunk of my childhood playing with the PS2, several years in fact, and back then I of course was plenty pleased with the graphics. That's the funny thing, of course, because you don't really notice poor graphics until you've seen something better, at least for me. That 'something better' ended up being my first next-gen console, the Xbox360, and suffice to say those first few months were an outright TREAT for my eyes, more than any recent games simply because the leap forward in sophistication was so much more noticeable..

So, for you console gamers who went from one generation to the next; what was the first game, the first moment you just had to stare a bit because it was all so very beautiful to look at?

I could technically say it was the very first game I played on my new 360, Mass Effect, but that isn't the case; the facial textures were awesome, of course, but the surroundings seemed a little too bland, with only a few exceptions. Maybe it was because this wasn't so big on atmosphere, and so I spent most of my time on various planets trying desperately not to die.

My first moment of 'Sweet Jebas' when it came to Next Gen graphics was Bioshock, or rather, the DEMO of Bioshock. See, that was something else that was new to me, the ability to download and play demos for console games; you can imagine the excitement, given there wasn't really that sort of option with the Playstation 2.

The demo covers the opening sequence, right up until you're just about to enter the Medical Pavilion. I was playing it with a friend- i.e. he was watching, and complaining that he wanted to play it- and right from the get-go, we were enthralled. The plane crash, the cold night, the lone lighthouse... and thus we worked our way through it, bit by bit, until we got to the very first splicer. You know, the crazy lady that disembowls the faceless Atlas-ally, and leaps up onto the ceiling to stalk you... and, just as you're thinking 'Thank God For This Tough Metal Bubble,' the traitorous door OPENS.

We were TERRIFIED. We didn't want to leave that Bathysphere, no sir, we wanted to stay there forever and die of dehydration. Not because the opening moments were, compared to most horror fare, particularly scary in and of itself. No, this was simply because it all looked so much BETTER, so much more real than what we were used to. The shadows, the textures, even the water surrounding our little sub was so much more believable than any other game we'd encountered, only enhanced by the background audio, we were half-convinced that if our character was killed, we'd die ala Matrix. I tried to make my friend take the controller, but the fiend suddenly didn't seem so eager to play anymore! >_< And so out I crept... heart pounding, eye twitching... the rest is history. xD

So there you go, folks; it was actually also my first moment of videogame heebie-jeebies. The PS2 Silent Hill games never really got to me, frightening-wise. xD

Rainbow Six Vegas when you're in the helicopter over Vegas for the first time: Shit got real.

Also, Dead Rising 1's intro when you re first in the Mall. I had never before seen so many zombies in one game.

I was pretty late getting on this gen of consoles, but I'd played God of war and God of war 2, then I got 3 with my PS3 and came a little bit.

To me it's God of War 1. Such quality and even really smooth controls. All that and with minimal, if not outright zero, loading times. And that was when I was still comparing graphics and quality in the PS2.

Ooo, yes, God of War 3 was a bit of a less profound 'whoa moment,' in part because I had already played tons of next-gen titles before picking it up, so my standards were higher. x3

Most recent moment was Crysis 2 on the Playstation 3; the graphics, in my opinion at least, are just GORGEOUS. @.@ Some of the city streets just seemed so... real.

The first time I played Final Fantasy VII in 96 I think it was. I had never seen a more ferocious Bahamut! Growing up with the original Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy in the mid 80's, I was just used to garbage for graphics(which were awesome at the time btw) and when I did my first summon in FFVII I just didn't know what to think. I was almost an adult by then btw lol.
Danmit , you stole my answer . Iv'e been playing games since the nes , but FF7 was the first OMGTHISISSOAWSOME moment . Because of the transition into 3D . FF6 is still my favorite game though .

First thing that comes to mind is Metal Gear Solid 2.

I remember when the first trailers were released prior to the release of the PS2.

Blew my goddamn childhood mind.

As a pc gamer mostly, my first real 'holy moly' moment was the first time I played CoD 1. Before that all my games had been very poor in the graphics department. That one was the first 'next gen' you could say. Though of course not too long after that hl2 came out as well, which blew CoD 1 out of the water...

That part in Fallout 3 when you first leave the vault and you're blinded by light.

Then, when your eyes adjust, you are met with the harsh looking wasteland in front of you.

That moment just tops them all in terms of awe factor.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles for the Gamecube. When it came out the game was so pretty it had to file a restraining order against the rest of your gaming library. I'm probably the only one who thinks that, but it does stand out as the first game that really gobsmacked me.

Probably messing around with cryengine 3 and seeing reflections in reflections (puddle reflecting building, reflecting environment) the insane particle effects. And just the insane amount of detail and real time interaction with the environment. So far no game has really wow'd me though. Hopefully some new cryengine 3 and unreal 4 stuff will finally push some boundaries as far as lighting better subsurface scattering, better use of SSAO MSAA tessellation, and everything having physics and all that jazz. All the consoles are just too low res and no AA and outside of maybe some of the battlefield stuff and crytek no ones really pushed the PC market.

Both Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII for me. With the knowledge that the best visuals in a game are in cut scene,(in last gen and was not a pc gamer). I knew that the New gen was going to look gorgeous but i still figured that the "cut scene rule still applied." Both of these games made me go, "wait am I actually playing, holy shit this is game play, HOLY SHIT game play can look this good."

DO NOT MAKE ANY COMMENTS ABOUT THE TWO I LISTED BEING, "The best movie I ever played."

Other wise my recent one was this summer when I finally got a decent Gaming laptop and had the "Holy Shit Portal 2 looks just like it does on the PS3, but I'm not in my living room on my ps3 im in my bedroom on a laptop." moment.

I really liked that game, I wish they did more in the way of making it a proper Action-RPG though. NPC interaction was very superficial and practically pointless, the requirement for multi-player was a mess, and the world didn't really feel like it changed much over the years as you made your pilgrimage each time, but I poured a ton of hours into it.

OT: First? Jee, that'd be hard to remember. I can remember two of my most recent, though: The Witcher 2 and Sleeping Dogs (on PC). The Witcher 2 is without a doubt the most beautiful fantasy game I've ever seen so far, and Sleeping Dogs was very well optimized, considering everything its engine was doing. Riding a motorcycle through the streets of Hong Kong when it started raining was just astounding.

That would probably be my first "That looks great!" as well, though I didn't play it very long. Maybe an hour. Then I forgot about it and returned it since I just rented it.

I was like 5 or 6 years old and seeing that my SNES was capable of such amazing graphics was certainly an eye opener.

I was like 8 years old when I saw it in motion for the first time, seeing my favorite plumber running, jumping, punching, kicking and flying in 3D was an amazing, magical moment to me.

Seriously, when I saw the first images of the game in a local videogame TV show, it made my jaw to drop and I knew I needed to buy a PS2, no more ugly pixels and Snake had a face!!!. When I finally got my hands on a PS2, it was my second magical moment. I was already a teenager, but that didn't stop me from feeling that magical moment again, setting up my PS2, popping up the disc... and to be greeted by one of the most awesome intro cinematics ever made... it was simply magical.

I was a bit undecided with wich GameCube game to add, there was Pikmin with it's 100 little critters running at the same time, there was Metroid Prime and it's sharp and purty 60 framed rendered graphics, there was F-Zero GX with it's still amazing soundtrack and it's fast and furious 60 framed graphics (still my favorite racing game of all time), Zelda Wind Waker with it's huge levels and charming cel shaded graphics or Soul Calibur 2 and it's detailed characters and backgrounds running at 60 fps, but finally I decided to settle with Resident Evil 4 as my jaw dropping graphical moment of the good ol' Cube.

RE4 came in an interesting era, a turnpoint of sorts, wich graphical quality was just on par with what the original Xbox was capable of, if not looking better than it. More than it's graphics, it was the gameplay that floored me, the very first game with "over the shoulder" third person camera perspective, it's quite interesting to see it as the golden standard for any third person title today.

I could add a few more, but I'm way too lazy to add them, just add to this list Metal Gear Solid 3 (wich made me to horribly regret about selling my PS2), Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Oblivion, BioShock, Gears of War, God of War 2 (my jaw dropped by 2 things with this game, the fact that this didn't make it as a PS3 game in 2007 and that the PS2 still could pull off such amazing visuals... it also added salt to the wound), Call of Duty 4, Metal Gear Solid 4 (it's quite interesting how the Metal Gear franchise has massively evolved graphically), Crysis, Fallout 3, Age of Conan, Crysis 2, Skyrim and The Secret World (I'm seriously floored by that game's graphics right now) and probably Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes will make my jaw to drop once again when it gets released, hopefully for the PC.
