My first games I ever played were RTS games for hours on end. As a teen, I didn't touch shooters because I figured I wouldn't be good at them. I probably still aren't but I do enjoy a few shooters. I'm looking to buy games like Counter Strike GO on xbox, Natural Selection 2 if my shitty pc can run it, etc etc.

The only problem is, that though I've played the original counter strike, natural selection, the ship, and other multiplayer half life 1 mods recently with a group of skype friends, I kinda want to play with a bigger group. A lot of the time I'm waiting around for these 5 skype friends to log on, only for one or two to not be present. A three player game of the aforementioned games is not fun really.

So... how would I get the courage to join a public server? I know no matter what I will run into assholes, sexists, racists, and people who make the game unenjoyable and maybe even traumatic. But maybe there is a way to find friendly servers or maybe even servers for beginners? I'm not a very competitive person and prefer team-based multiplayer games that fulfill objectives. Maybe I shouldn't worry too much since I'm not joining death match games?

Well the only thing I can say is go for it? Hop onto a Public server and just look out for anyone with a mic. If someone starts chatting shit, mute them. I've noticed that I've reached the point ( On the xbox atleast ) that I'm playing with the same group of people and when they're not on...I'm left by myself too. ( Kinda irritating trying to play BF3 with a group of numpties who don't speak ).

So, just hop onto a server and try talking to some new people or google for clans/groups that play the same game.

You're overthinking this. By all means be prepared for the occasional idiot but don't let them put you off. Not sure about PC, but on Xbox, if you run into somebody you don't like you just send an anonymous "negative feedback" report on them and you won't be matched up with them again. You can even report them if they were being really obscene or offensive. Conversely, you can friend-request nice players and slowly build up a network of nice guys and gals to play with. Check out online forums and noticeboards, you get quite a lot of players looking for friends in certain games, people who want to play less competitive game types, and so on.

Long story short, there are plenty of people like you out there. You just have to find them.
