Anyone realize that there have been a lot more games with flame throwers in them lately? They've been in games for a while, but those were all Strategy games for the most part, like Starcraft. but there seem to be more action games with them now. In the last half a year, games like Call of Duty World at War, and Killzone 2 have bragged about the flamethrower, and even Gears 2, Fallout 3 and so on. Is this trend going to continue untill it becomes standard in all games? Or will it die out?

As yahtzee says: "It could only be more awesome if it had tits, and was ON FIRE."

Yeah, I actually noticed that trend increasing. Call it better technology, and therefore better fire effects to show off, I guess.

Flamethrowers have been fairly common in FPSs over the years, but I've never really found them to be all that useful.

All the flamethrowers are underpowered in games.
Otherwise they're awesome. Or as yahtzee says: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..."

The only flamethrower that I need is the Backburner. Still, being able to rain flaming death on your enemies is something that's just too fun to disappear from games any time soon.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory/Gold Rush/Bank

Nothing quite like a bank full of roasted axis as you slip away with the gold.

No, not really.

In Call of Duty: World at War, it is because it is about the Pacific Campaign. It is common knowledge that flamethrowers saw heavy use against the Japanese in WWII. Plus, United Offensive introduced flamethrowers first in the Call of Duty series.

As for the others...Flamethrowers are a stable of sci-fi films and games. Aliens, Warhammer 40k, StarCraft, Turok (The older games) even Star Wars features some flamethrowers. It really isn't anything new. Flamethrowers are common in sci-fi, so it was only a matter of time until Gears threw one in. It is just a coincidence that several sci-fi games have all came out within a short amount of time and feature a flamethrower.

I hope it does become standard. I'd like Left 4 Dead a lot more if it had a flame thrower. Oh yeah right, plus any game where you lit people on fire is a-ok with me!

Unfortunately, the only time I've seen a flamethrower done WELL is in TF2. Having played most of the games you mentioned, I have to say that it tends to be either overpowered (Fallout, Command&Conquer, Wolfenstein) or drastically underpowered (Halo 3, Starcraft, Killzone) or just glitchy as all get-out (Gears of War 2). I would applaud the increase in flamethrowers if only they were ever done properly.

Why the fuck do people keep saying Waw had flamethrowers in the series first? ever heard of COD UO?
Because some people seem to think that CoD4 was the first game in the series. *eyeroll*

Not really. They're also almost totally useless in games. The only flamethrower in a game that accurately portrays why flamethrowers are useful is in MGS3, where the flames erupt quickly through trenches and corridors, burning all.
