Just finished COD:WAW right after BIA:HH and started playing COD2. I'm playing on veteran and am about to finish. There were 2 parts that just really kicked my ass several times while all the others seemed like a lazy stroll. Those 2 parts were easily overcome with smoke screen, the only 2 times i've used smoke so far. All the other times i run ahead of my squad and flanked the enemy. I noticed that when i held at the front I end up dead within 10 min. I started reminiscing on the COD4, the other BIA series, and the few MOH i've played. Is it me or do all these WWII games just boil down to flanking and is that a good thing or just the natural outcome of team fps?

I prefer flanking and using cover over Overshields any day of the week, personally. Haven't played Hells Highway, but I've played the first two Brothers games, and I swear by them. My friends can tell when I've been playing them a lot when I go to a LAN party and actually have my spartan ducking behind cover.

I play a lot of WWII fps games, and in most it does seam to all end up with me flanking a load of nazis, while my inept team mates give them something to shoot; But I think thats just how most fps situations naturally play out.

I'm no military expert but isn't flanking the preferred tactic of warfare throughout history?

Anyway when you just charge straight into the enemy WW1 happens.

Flanking is one of the oldest yet most effective tactics in any military conflict. Its not surprise that wouldn't translate over into a video game as well. Thats just how war is.

Flanking worked well in World War 2 because there were a lot of machine gun nests. So, you'd flank and get to his side. I mean, what else could you think of instead? Unless you're Master Chief, you couldn't jump over them....

yea, it gets old to have your team pin down enemies and you flank them, but thats how it realy went down. so its a good thing that gets old

Yeah, but couldn't you just see our grandfathers and great grandfathers battling across Europe and the Pacific, getting bored with flanking tactics, and just start rushing every enemy position? Good times... Good times.

Play any RTS, FPS(a solid one) and you will see that flanking an enemy always bashes several times harder than head on collision.

Yeah, it's sort of amazing how flanking is so effective, no matter what the game/conflict is.

I mean, no matter what, having an enemy surrounded, no matter the AI or game, you have an advantage.

Something so effective that's extremely simple at the same time. It's like a club. It's a stick with a harder, heavier part at the end, but it's served as an effective weapon since the stone age. You'll never get a better head-basher, really.

Yup. After all, why whittle them down from one side when you can whittle them down from three?

Flanking is a great mechanic because it makes the game a little more interesting than "CHAREG!"

Company of Heroes doest the whole affair paticularly well, forcing you to really think ahead and utilise a variety of units in varied away, such as drawing tank fire with a heavily armoured M4 Sherman, and then hitting them from the side or rear with the faster and stronger M10 Wolverine.

God I love that game.

Its a sign an fps is good when flaning is your best option. Trying to catch players on their blindside means you get the first shot aka the "critical shot." An fps where its just as good to charge them head on than get them with their trousers down is not a good game.

Its either flank, or shoot and pray. Coming from a guy who can't aim to save his life, I choose flanking anyday of the week, preferably with a shotgun

I think its more of a basic fundemental like getting the higher grounds gives you an advantage or getting to cover. Flanking is jus a basic tactic that everyone seems to employ.
