Best way to do it would be to get them some of that monthly flea treatment stuff. Will kill the ones on the cats and all the rest will follow in about a week. Failing that, I have heard that sprinkling Borax on your carpets and letting it sit, then vacuuming it will get rid of them.
Though I don't know if that's really true or not. I always treat my cat with the drops when he gets fleas, which is rare since he's an indoor cat.

yeah i think i will pick some up. what about if they get in the beds or anything like that . My dad still lets the cats sleep on his bed but you know what. I think that becomes his problem at that point

If you get the drops it should kill all of them in the house. They find the cat, jump on it, and get poisoned. As far as the soap goes though. Dunno. Unless you feel like laundering your dad's mattress or something. :p A simple vacuuming should get rid of the things in the beds though, or a steam vac if your really paranoid about it.

There's this stuff you put in their necks (the cats, that is) that works great and isn't too expensive. To get rid of the fleas is a *****, but in my experience you can get rid of it yourself (without those Discovery Channel guys I mean) by spraying the house with any bugspray (Roxasect was what I got). Stay out of the house a day or two if you can.

yeah dude, get the drops they are not that expensive and are worth it in the long run. I pay about 20 dollars a month for my cats drops from the vet. However, I think I remember hearing somewhere that if you put a plate of lemon detergent or something like that under a night light fleas will be attracted to it. Other than that, to help reduce the number of fleas vacuum everything in your house and empty the vacuum, that will get rid of some of them, but until you treat your cat your fighting a losing battle.

Frontline flea treatments are the most effective but can also be expensive especially if you have multiple animals. A cheaper route is anything Lavender scented. Sprays, salts even incense. Fleas hate lavender. I've washed my dogs using lavender epsom salts and used lavender type room sprays (think Febreeze and whatnot) for couches and beds. Hope this helps!

Like it has been said before, get some of that flea treatment for the cats (frontline I believe) then use flea/bug bombs. You'll have to get everyone, cats and other pets, out of the house for hours while the bug bombs work but it should do the trick. We used to do that every once in a while when we still had indoor/outdoor cats.

I've heard of a good, cheap method of killing all the fleas in one room, but I haven't tested it because I've never had fleas.

1. Cover or black out the windows in the room and turn off the heating.

2. Place a tall, thin candle in a large (wide and shallow) dish or container of water.

3. Light the candle, turn off the lights, then close and seal the door. Leave for 24 hours.

The theory is that as the dark room becomes colder at night, the fleas will gravitate towards the only heat (and light) source i.e. the candle, but because the candle is in water they'll drown as they land near it.

Like I said, I've never tested it myself, but it's worth a punt and should only cost you one candle and a roll of tape (and because the candle is in water, even if a fat flea somehow managed to knock it over, it's unlikely that it would cause a fire).

However, this doesn't address the cause of the problem which are probably the cats, so you should treat them with some kind of anti-flea treatment otherwise the fleas will just come back.

Diatomaceous earth -- get the food grade stuff (it's harmless to pets and kids) -- sprinkle on the carpets, etc. It's inexpensive (a lot less than the chemical treatments for your carpet). You can google it to find the specific directions for use (if you feed a little bit to your cats, it's supposed to kill worms as well. Yes, fleas give worms to animals.) Then dose the cats with Frontline or Advantage.
