One of the most elusive elements to video games so far has been the portrayal of any authentic female heroines/love interests/companions. Almost every girl has been boiled down to Hollywood stereotypes or, to quote Yahtzee “supercilious badass action girls” that are painful to watch and even more painful to actually play. But every once in awhile, game writers get it right and create a truly memorable character.
One of my favorites and personal nomination goes to Alyx Vance of the Half-Life 2 series. Even though she is one of the aforementioned “badass action girls”, she had incredible substance to her character with true emotional responses. She was written so well that she could remain tough on the outside but acted like a true human on the inside, a quality that many female characters sadly lack.
