I read the Forum Rules via the tab above, as well as the Users Guide to the Forums, and I am still unclear whether I would be breaking the rules for posting about the launch of the beta version of a game I have been working on with a team at uni.

The key part relating would be: "Our forums are a place to talk with like-minded people, not a place to advertise your blog, webpage, YouTube channel or commercial enterprise. Your profile has a place for such things, and that is where it should stay. If you fail to do this, you will automatically get a 1 month suspension."

Firstly I can't tell whether advertising for a free to download beta test would be breaching the above terms, and Secondly I can't seem to find where on my profile I should put such things.

I thought I should post something first rather than incurring suspension, as I would prefer not to cause any trouble. Any moderator clarification would be appreciated, thanks.

In the strictest sense, no. The escapists has paid advertisements, which makes allowing anything that might be interpreted as an ad to be posted for free a big no no.

But, for a gaming forum, there's certainly nothing wrong with creating a thread for the sake of discussion about any given game, and letting the topic speak for itself towards promoting the game.

I think the posters above me have a point, it really just depends on the context of where you post it. As for putting it on your profile, the fact your programing a game may fit well under the "About Me" section along with a link to the site.

But now that we're discussing it, I'd like to know, what kind of game are you making and where can I try it out? Since I've asked about it, it shouldn't count as advertising if you tell me.

It's a tactical top down shooter by the name of [stranded] (yes the brackets are included) and you can download and try out the beta by downloadling from our Indie DB page. I'll put the link in my about me section so as not to risk breaking the rules.

It sounds interesting, I will have to check it out. I'll definitely tell you what I think of it after I've played it for a bit.

Thanks!

Well I would change the name of your thread to iss advertising free games allowed to limit confusion about your question. Though I saw what you said it was in a previous post so I downloaded so I figure I'll give it a shot when I have time. Need to do some stuff on a MMO first before time runs out but later.
