It's interesting really, Finding genes that aids in being people friendly and breeding them for that gene since 1960's. This exsperament is a way to find out how it was done with the wolf that turned into a dog after thousands of years of breeding. These foxes shown characteristics of domestication in the 9th generation. Having floppy ears when young for a longer time then the wild foxes and a shorter tail.

But yah, read it :). The photo's makes me want one.

This isn't exactly news, the Soviet fox domestication project's been common knowledge since at least 1997.

But yes. Everyone should have a Fox in their life. The rare Vulpes imperator, native to New England but recently seen ranging in northern Nevada. Makes a wonderful companion.

I read that article, and then went to youtube. If they ever manage to get these things out to the general public as pets, I will probably wind up with one before I die. Do want.

I saw a town fox a few weeks back, on the way home from work. I work until 10pm, so I leave pretty late, but as I was walking home (weather being too icy for my bike) I spotted a fox walking across the road, in the place I'd been walking just thirty seconds before. I stopped and watched, and fox just walked a bit, stopped, looked at me, carried on walking, then stopped and looked again, and did that all across the road. It looked so cute and friendly, not vicious at all or anything, and was just padding along the road like nobody's business. This is in the suburbs of a fairly big city, by the way, and I'd never seen a fox in the wild before this, especially not being in urban England...

I personally have seen many wild foxes (and a good proportion of those have been decidedly non-shot). It was not until late last year that I saw a so called 'urban' fox though.

if i could afford one, I'd have one all ready, T-T a fox is totally the pet i want :3 i would name her Victoria (Vicky for short) and she would be ether your 'standard orange' or and arctic fox

and there's a lot of merit to that, there's a guy that lives around where i work with a pet TIMBER WOLF (the wolfs name is Zorro btw) haven't petted him cause he won't let me, but been close enough i could have

funny thing is, its really mellow, WAY more mellow then some of the dogs that come in, and just seeing it walk by is awesome ( 2-3 times a day at least)

No...no. I unconditionally loathe foxes, and a joined in this sentiment by farmers everywhere; and until it's found roaming the praries with Old Man Jenkins and his 12-gauge, it's not Man's best friend.

we've apparently been chilling with foxes for a long time. a radio show on cbc(canadians will understand) had this anthropologist on it talking about how they were one of the first domesticated animals. they always look so friendly when I see them, I know they just want me to pet them.

I heard about this experiment a few years ago in my psychology class. It's essentially just selective breeding (only mating the most tame foxes of each generation), but still neat. And, yes, I really, really, want one.

Lucky PC mods, I wish I had Vulpes as a companion in fallout. Or any legion companion.

I assume thats what your on about since you said vulpes, and play lots of NV. Ok I sound stalkerish now so shutting up.
That's Vulpes Inculta in New Vegas. Southern Nevada (and I'm pretty sure he's never been to the Commonwealth!)

Vulpes imperator means "Emperor Fox" in Latin, and it's been a running joke between me and a friend since...oh, gettin' on a year now. Pre-dates the release of NV anyway. I'm native to New England (born and raised in Boston) and "range around Northern Nevada" (I've lived in Reno since 2002).

And now you know. Carry on stalking. ;)

Did an assignment on these dudes just before new years. Some pretty cool shiz...

You can tame pretty much any animal to live with you so long as you hand rear it from birth if it survives being hand reared that is... But sooner or later the instincts kick in and the animal will become unpredictable and therefore dangerous.

People have tried to keep UK foxes as pets in the past and to an extent it can be done, but they are still too unpredictable to be treated like domestic dogs... I'd love to try though.

You can all have ours, come and take them. Damn vermin, take the rabbits and the fucking cane toads while you're at it. It's funny, my mates and I were drinking around a campfire one night and we saw a fox and my Irish mate was all "wow a fox how majestic and beautiful", and we, the Australians, were all "how can we kill it the fucking vermin".
