A friend just send me a joke image criticizing the lack of complexity in FPS level design today. What I found so amusing about it besides the joke is that I actually recognized the example map they used. I was wondering if any other escapists can identify the map as well. I'm looking for game and level name here.

(Map on the left. I hope you don't think I recognized the joke map :p)

I edited out the full date so as not to make it a total giveaway while maintaining the joke for those who also will be amused by it.

Anyway, spoiler your answer if you know it so you don't ruin it for others. For the noobs, this means writing {spoiler}game name{/spoiler} but using [ ] brackets instead.

Is that
Doom
?

I'm not really bothered. It's not like there's no more complex FPS', in fact some (Crysis for example) even give you a more open a apporach as in "your objective is here I don't care how you reach it." Besides I can a appreciate a story driven shooter as well.

If you're trying to ID the map on the right, sure, why not?

Agreed. I like my games to have story too. There are so many games these days that are so straightforward like Left 4 Dead (not that I'm suggesting L4D would be better with 199X maps) that they get really dry after a few play-throughs. One just shows more effort and imagination to me while others put that imagination into the environment and story. If it fails on that though, then the game is a piece of crap as far as I'm concerned.

Don't forget I'm also looking for level name/number here if you know that too.

Half Life 2 maybe?
Haha. Half-Life is the one on the right (just without the cutscenes). Seriously, Half-Life 2 is linear as hell. It's not really a fault or anything, just a fact.

Also, Half-Life 2 did not come out in the 90s.
So true. It goes to show a game doesn't HAVE to have complex level design to be good, but it's an added plus IMO.

I'm pretty sure I recognize the layout, but I don't know Doom well enough to actually give a level number. I wouldn't even have had the game right without cheating; I couldn't decide between Doom and Dark Forces.

You got the game right, but I actually know the level. Good guess otherwise.

Yeah, I just edited that cheat out so that more people can stab a guess. I realized people weren't going to guess if I told them what it was.

Is that just another guess?
Technically yes. Right now? No.

EDIT: I recognized the bit on the right with the squares. Always got lost there. Since the post I've loaded up Doom and checked my guess. >.> So..don't give me credit or whatever.

How about this...

Easy Mode: Game.

Doom, id software, December 10th 1993.

Normal Mode: Level name and number.

E1M6, Central Processing.

Hard Mode: Level Designer.

John 'Is about to make you his *****' Romero.

LUNATIC MODE: Name of the Song and Band they ripped off for the music.

Sanity Obscure by Believer.

I know it is Doom... Put I can't remember the levels name. I've got the guidebook upstairs... But this isn't that important to me.

You sure seem sure yourself.
Did you know all that off hand or did you have to look it up?
When I saw the map, I got the game, episode, level number and the second word in the level title. The first wasn't "sewage" despite all the green areas I remember in the map. Also, fixed your difficulty title.

Nah, you deserve credit, though

outdid us all. I recognized those rooms as well, which is what shocked me that I could Id (see what I did there?) a map by just a few rooms. I certainly wasn't thinking of the context of the date printed clearly at the top when I recognized it.
