I just want a list of free games that are worth playing

Please don't include pseudo free games where you have to buy some special gold membership to progress or something, and please exclude those with 90% viagra commercial ads and 10% free game, that doesn't work very well either.
Oh and forget about those games that were free but now you have to pay for them again. (Like PORTAL on Steam)

I just want to know if I missed some particular peculiar game that is worth playing and which I can play for free.

Want an example:

Battle for Wesnoth is a good one.

Most of Yahtzee's games, especially the X Days a Sauerkraut (with Trilby's Notes, the best one) ones and Art of Theft.

sweet mother of shit, OK! Portal was free. Apparently I'm unlucky.
It also takes longer, but you can progress in Spiral Knights without paying any real money.
Extra Credits also say that "World of Tanks" is a good free game. Never played it though.

Other than that, the rest of the good games I can offer are dirt cheap, not free.

Caaaave story.

Absolutely fantastic game that is also ported onto the DS and 3DS I believe, with a 3d version in November.

The PC version is free though. You need to install the english patch, but it's very simple with the instructions.

League of legends 10 times over, It is the only game I have ever been slightly addicted to and I have played sooo many games in my life time. Masses of dept and can really give you some great fun with mates, but it comes with a warning of it does have a harsh community.

Portal was free for about a week on Steam last month.

Portal was indeed free.

And Spiral Knights is a fun game. I've got all 5* equipment and I've never payed. So I'd recommend giving it a try.

Also, Dwarf fortress, even though it's already been mentioned. Word of warning though, very complex and NOT a fast paced game. And the graphics my cause blindness.

Dwarf Fortress! Not only is it free, it's also one of the best games ever created (at least in my opinion). Or Liberal Crime Squad, made by the same people. In fact pretty much every roguelike out there is free, apart from that one about surviving in ancient Finland.

If you can get past the graphics, there is a truly vast selection of roguelikes out there to play, and they're so varied they can cater to pretty much any taste. Action [http://doom.chaosforge.org/], RPG [http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/], management [http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/], zombie survival [http://roguesurvivor.blogspot.com/], space exploration [http://code.google.com/p/rlprospector/], crime simulator [http://lcs.wikidot.com], giant battling robots [http://www.gearheadrpg.com/]... seriously, you can find anything.

Portal has been made free twice, once after the announcement of Portal 2 and then again just a couple of weeks ago. I grabbed it the first time it was free.

The older Command and Conquer games are free, C&C 1 and Red Alert 1 are available on EA's website.

Dungeon Crawl : Stone Soup
http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/

It's a typical roguelike game with simplified graphics.

The Spirit Engine.
http://thespiritengine.com/

Sidescrolling action rpg with very interesting, unique scenario taking place in uhhhhh, steampunk-fantasy crossover setting.
