Free is in quotes because the games aren't actually free, you need to pay a premium to get them. From what I know, the Xbox Live and Twitch Prime games are yours to keep, even if your subscription expires. The PS+ Games are only available if the subscription is active.

The Know's helpful video detailing what games are available on what platform and when they are available.

It's mostly indie games, but a lot of them look interesting, like Battle Chef Brigade, Serial Cleaner, Hue, and The Framed Collection. Any interest in any of the 31 games available this month?

Xbox 360 games with gold let's you keep the "free" games permanently from the service even if you stop subscribing. but from what i've heard on Xbox One it doesn't and the service became more like PS+ in that you only get to keep the games if you keep subcribing on Xbone apparently.

From https://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/games-with-gold
$700 value based on up to $350 on Xbox One and up to $350 on Xbox 360; active Gold membership required to play free games. On Xbox One, active Gold membership required to play free games you?ve redeemed. Restrictions Apply.
Although both italic and bold sentence read the same to me, the most I'd be guessing you're keeping are 360 games.

Also, I'm not watching videos by The Know anymore because of their click bait titles half of the time.

In any case; not too far into it yet, but I'm currently enjoying Heavy Rain 👍

360 lets you keep them forever.

PS3 was a weird messy mix lol. Some of the early ones (before PS4 came out) didn't have embedded license date. Not sure how many of them did or didn't afterwards.

PS4 PSPlus offerings have embedded license dates matching the end of your active subscription when you download them, where you can be offline playing regardless. If you go past that date you have to go online again with an active subscription to refresh it.

Some of the bonus (aside from the regular schedule) games on PS4 don't have the subscription-dated licenses, seemingly falling under "Items purchased with PSPlus discounts" rather then having been designated free games.

Assuming you take your console totally offline with no plan to reconnect it, things relying on dates are basically the tissue paper of DRM too, if thats your boat.

Absolver's been pretty fun, but not sure how long it'll hold my interest. The crux of the ongoing game seems to be player dueling, but there's RPG mechanics and seemingly not a whole lot of matchmaking to keep people with hundreds of hours from bumping into newcomers and slaughtering them.

Xbox One gives everyone with a Gold subscription a set of free games every month, a mix of Xbox 360 titles and old Xbox one titles. As long as you download them during the free period, they're yours to keep forever no matter if your subscription expires. Game Pass is a completely separate feature that does something different (essentially acting as Gamefly, for Xbox One digital games).

Twitch Prime is giving out some free games too, and you already have Twitch Prime if you have Amazon Prime.

Don't know about PS4.

Just to clarify a bit for readers; those Xbox One games will be yours only if you have Gold though.
I think it might have been different during the early days, but hey, who reads the fine print or faq's, right?

What happens to my Games with Gold games if I cancel my Xbox Live Gold subscription?

On Xbox One, you?ll no longer be able to access your Games with Gold titles if you cancel your subscription. However, if you decide to renew your subscription at any time, you?ll be able to access and play your previously redeemed Games with Gold titles again.

On Xbox 360, any Games with Gold titles that you redeem as an Xbox Live Gold member are yours to keep, regardless of whether you continue your subscription.

cool. so it was pretty much what i thought it was.
