Hey I just thought I might dwell into the deep knowledge base of the escapist, and see what turns up when I mention free MMO
Just some background as to what I?ve played so far.

Ragnarok- The most addicting time wasting game I ever spent to much time on. Fun though, and since I didn?t have anything better to do, it was a nice inexpensive waste of my time:) Its just gotten a little old, might go back once new classes.(I only played free private servers FYI, and pretty much all of them at that.)

WOW- Played it for the free month, and it was fun, but I WONT for the life of me pay monthly for any game. It puts to much stress on me to be playing or feel like my money is being wasted, that and the obvious marketing aspect of them making things take longer.

Fly for fun- This one i really liked, but couldn?t keep friends playing from the obvious look of the game, and they changed it from the one thing I really liked. That being the levelling up of a skill that you use, as you?re using it. Not only does this make sense, but also, it made it so you would get something going up every minute, giving what I found to be a very satisfying sense of progression.

Final Fantasy XI (or w/e one was online)- WAY TO BIG. They seemed to created a huge world, but really i found it to be a huge time hole, it was to big, made walking from anywhere to anywhere a chore, and don?t even think about finding anything, maybe I just didn?t play for long enough, but seeing as I was paying for this time spent doing nothing wandering around I thought it was best to stop.

I have played tons of other ones, but they aren?t worth as much mention. I guess the main thing I want is something where it rewards teamwork, and makes it worth your while to not go it alone. Just something so that it feels like we are doing something together, and less like they are just sapping my exp.

If it helps my favourite multiplayer experience was with Champions of Norath, 1 and 2, with 3 friends all hanging out and playing the whole game in one night pretty much, but having the time of our life?s, running around dungeons, yelling at each other to use the heal bubble thing, waiting for everyone to optimize there equips/skills/spells. Eating unhealthy, and pretty much just not caring about anything outside of eating and gaming. So something with really good teamwork aspect, and hyper addictive would be nice. Thanks in advance

Runescape, it's a pretty basic game, 3D but only just unless they gave it a major overhaul since last time I played (admittedly that was about a year ago). It's free in theory but in practice all the goodies only become accessible when you choose to shell out something approximating $12 a month.

A few years ago I played one of those Korean MMOs.. no, it wasn't Conquer Online (which I also tried for an hour and then uninstalled. Apparently the only way to move around is to jump everywhere. Not joking).

Priston Tale. Interesting, rather generic game. It was free for a while, then they became more popular and went the p2p way. I think thats how it went..

Ah yeah that?s another thing I would like to avoid, is the totally free, except for if you want to be better than everyone else.
I have tried runescape, and didn?t like it very much, it fall's under the not worth mentioning, but thanks anyways:)

If you want something that rewards teamwork and groups of peopel coming togetehr to complete quests. i suggest Dungeons and Dragons online stormreach. built in teamspeak, and theres practially not much at all in that game you can solo without being some beserko barb or warrior. it's cheap too. Auctions, cool dungeons not the same maps over and over again. intresting community too, bit more mature then some others out there. And it's like 15 to buy and i think 12 a month or something. I ran it for a while but was frustrated cause every once in a while its nice to just solo some sutff at your own pace. anyways....play city of heros. and happy hunting :D

Maple story- a nice 2D MMO, A little child orrianated, but now when we got the Pirate class, you can use guns!
it simple compered to WoW, but you may need to look at a guide to make a perfect character.
Also, there is a thing called the 'Cash Shop', that lets you buy stuff like cool looking cloths (that do nothing) or double exp for a few hours for real money. And even though you are encourged to use it, you don't have to.

I have tried this one aswell, but it falls victim to the same flaw as gunbound, Fly for Fun, and so many others that offer you the better equips and incentives for paying.
I did like the action combat style it had, just to much grinding for me.

Lessee...I play Flyff, Rappelz, DOMO, and 9Dragons at the moment. I also played but dropped Tales of Pirates and 2Moons. And I'm knee-deep in the Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine MMO closed beta.

I've gone through a great deal of koream MMO's aswell, they range from compleatly confusing and pourly translated, to mildly confusing and Understandably translated. Some had some interesting gameplay, but if i have no idea whats going on, lowers the fun.

Tried Priston Tale while it was beta, seemed ok, but yeah very generic, might be nice to see how it matured.

BEHOLD, SWG EMULATOR http://swgemu.com/

REWINDING TIME AND RETURNING TO WHEN SWG DIDN'T SUCK

It's still in the beta phase and not everything works, and some planets are missing their creatures, but it's something to look out for.

Tried Silkroad too, it was ok, bit too generic, nothing special, and no really good teamplay elements.

Most free MMO's tend to be asian in origin, and most asian MMO's tend to be terrible. I think you can see where that leads.

I don't have a problem with monthly fees for a simple reason - I'll probably put more time into them than I would a single player game, and I buy fewer games when I'm playing an MMO. Right now I'm playing LOTRO - I purchased a lifetime subscription when it launched ($200) and I figure that I've just recently passed the break-even point. It's all free from here :p

Likely free, with microtransactions. We gave it a look in the office yesterday, and it has been deemed terrible. Maybe it'll improve during development though.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be free-to-play, with micro transaction of special items you can buy if you feel like it. Aeria Games is the publisher for DOMO, and that's free-to-play too.

I love the game so far. Then again, I love anything with the Shin Megami Tensei title on it, so I can't say I'm the best person to ask. I think I've found my WoW. XD

According to the magical wonder of Wikipedia, it went back to free to play after it had a long decline of players. F2p brought in a load new players. Also, priston tale 2 is in development. Q1 2009 or so, for the open beta.

The real money equips aren't better, they are just coustume for the regular one your wearing, and most things that effect gameplay that cost money only matter when you are high level (like 90+ high level)
Also, I disaggre about the grind, up to about level 70, there are enough quests and PQs
(party quest, liike a raid in wow, only short and simple) to keep you busy for atlest 80% of the time.

Maplestory... Its kinda fun. I played it for a while. It has that "free, unless you want extra stuff" kind of microtransactions, but they're only aesthetic, so you can be just as powerful as everyone else, you'll just be uglier.

Also, if you try out Maplestory, the best piece of advice I can give you is to create a female character. Most of the people on that game are 14 year old boys, so they'll do anything they can to get you to like them. Help you with quests, give you money and equipment, etc.
