Even as someone who is generally fine with games like this Dear Esther felt like it was mostly sniffing its own farts.

There are numerous other similar games like this that are far better. Such as "What remains of Edith Finch" or "Kentucky Route Zero"

Well, it was one of the first "walking simulators" or at least the one that people talked about the most when they whined and moaned about "walking simulators" not being hard enough or whatever before the bad times.

This is good to know, as I was curious about how Dear Esther stacked up to WRoEF, which I found uniquely charming and imaginative all around without overstaying its welcome. If I could fault it anywhere it would be some of the pathing felt a bit quirky in that wacky house, and there were a couple areas that felt too one-wayish.

If I could fault it anywhere it would be some of the pathing felt a bit quirky in that wacky house, and there were a couple areas that felt too one-wayish.

Yeah, Dear Esther is one long linear path where you look at the scenery(which is pretty), someone narrators stuff to you(which doesn't really explain much) and then the ending is really weird and has nothing to do with the anything else but is probably super symbolic or something.

That's it. That's the whole thing. It's like an hour long. You can honestly youtube it and miss nothing, but free is the next best price.
