Eversion.

One of the most imaginative platformers I've ever played.

Pretty sure both GTA and GTA 2 are freeware now, pretty awesome games for their time alright.

N. Get it now. If you can get past the sanity-bending difficulty, it's really a fantastic game.

Too bad you are late to the Free Portal party.

Also do you want browser based games or what dude?

Allods looks to be a very good MMORPG, I don't personally know because it doesn't run on Macs, but I would definitely check it out. Its a big download but completely free to play.

Were those the top down ones?
Yep, they were still fun though, worth a try especially since the are free, you can have some great fun with the cheats on even if you don't want to play the game. Top down flame throwers and rocket launchers are hilarious.

Yahtzee has made some good freeware games, the Chzo Mythos series notably. Check out his website Fully Ramblomatic and you can download them there.

I wanna be the guy is fun. For something far too complex, try Dwarf Fortress.

For less crazy games, what genre are you looking for? I don't know of any good freeware RPGs (though that isn't to say there aren't any), but there are bucketloads of multiplayer shooters and MMOs (though that isn't to say they're good).

Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_freeware_games] is suprisingly informative (and convenient) if you wanna browse through some lists to find what sounds interesting. Make sure to check the other lists up at the header as well. There's nothing wrong with browser based or shareware games.

Oh come on guys. Don't make me be the person who mentions Cave Story. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cave_Story]

Darn.

Have you tried Star Control 2? [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Control_II] It is now freeware and open source under the name The Ur-Quan Masters. [http://sc2.sourceforge.net/] Very awesome, old school space game. Awesome story, awesome aliens and awesome everything. Very big favourite of mine. Just depends if graphics are you number one priority because it looks a little dated. But you can set a super high detail option on to smooth out the pixels.

*stares at desktop* yessssshh. Also, there are a metric ton of free mmos floating around. Well, allegedly free, but still free to download. Thing is, most of them are complete crap. If you're going to get into mmos, I'd recommend joining an mmo forum and wandering through the gamelist.

Nethack

Someone mentioned nethack, so I guess rogue-likes are already on the table: ADOM is a good one...
