After watching Yahtzee's new video it has occurred to me that games just aren't fun anymore. At least not any game I've bought recently. So does anyone know of any games that are genuinely fun, i mean not as serious as the majority of games released nowadays. Also for more discussion, why is it that games take themselves too seriously at the moment? to try to make us seem more mature as a genre or for developers to make themselves more "professional" ?

"Fun" is such a subjective thing, recommending something that would be fun for everyone would be quite the difficult task. Anyway, I'd recommend TF2 and a sandbox game if you had friends. TF2 since it really doesn't take itself seriously which is something you mentioned and sandbox games because messing around with friends is always fun/

I am not sure what you mean by taking themselves too seriously, got an example?

Not sure how to reply. Every game I play is fun to me. I suppose JRPGS in general take themselves a little too seriously, considering the ridiculous character designs and generic plotline of rounding up a bunch of stereotypes to save the world one level at a time. Those can get a little hard to trudge across.

I've always found hack and slash games to be the best for just pure fun. Try out Bayonetta, God of War, Metal Gear Rising, DMC etc.

Also Nintendo games are good for that as well.

The...majority of games? Dunno, from my observations the majority isn't the super srs bsnss stuff. There are lots of big titles but a majority, no.

Anyway, and I cannot say this enough times, Magicka. Mega fun, and mega awesome. It somehow managed to conform to my ideals of a dream game AND I HADN'T LAID THEM DOWN YET! It has the most awesome casting system I've seen so far - something I've wanted for a lo-o-ong time, to make you feel like you're playing a mage with the command over the forces of the world. Also, it's choke full of humour and it's even funnier if played with a friend or more.

The Showdown Effect looks like a couple of barrels of fun, too. No wander, it's made by the same people behind Magicka.

No Time To Explain...well, I have the time, I just cannot. Watch a couple of minutes of TotalBiscuit's video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXi5tA4VVm0] to get the idea. It's about time travel...and stuff. And I think it manages to capture "fun".

Other than that...hmm, Game Dev Tycoon has been occupying me lately. Not "fun" as in "lighthearted"...not mainly, at least, but fun as certainly "entertaining" and "amusing". Quite addictive, too.

I've also discovered Minecraft. So sue me, I bought it, like, a month ago. That has its moments. If you're into it.

FTL: Faster Than Light is so awesome it needs a mention. If you like roguelike...erm, -likes. With spaceships.

Hotline Miami is, and I'll quote the threat title where I first heard of the game, "a bundle of joy". I cannot agree more.

Torchlight 2 is here, too. It's not "serious", it's not really "fun" either, not per se, at least. It is, however, a superbly good experience. Well, perhaps - your mileage may vary. If you've played Diablo 2, give TL2's demo a spin and see if you like it. Or, heck, just give it a spin - it's a really nice ARPG. Path of Exile is it's more moody and serious cousin, though - if for some reason you've played D2 and TL2 is missing something, PoE would provide almost guaranteed.

It wasn't too hard to pull off some examples of games that apparently are not the majority. I struggle to think of srs games, to be honest.

Oh...by the way, speaking of fun games, you can just go and get the Humble Double Fine Bundle [https://www.humblebundle.com/]. You're welcome.

More proof, as though it were needed, that you can never go wrong with the Portal games, particularly since their sense of fun only adds to, rather than detracts from, their deeper levels of appeal - as it should be. I suppose that I'd hesitantly point to the second one as the more "fun" of the two, since it's lighter in tone and broader in its comedy, despite the fact that those things make it a weaker game than its predecessor... but whatever.

There's also Minecraft, if you're up for a slower-moving, more comforting/relaxing breed of fun (punctuated by abrupt moments of usually-creeper-induced panic, but such instances grant appropriate weight to the more easygoing parts of the game, and vice-versa).

I'm immensely enjoying Persona 4 Arena and Far Cry 3 at the moment. P4A probably has the best fighting system of all fighting games i've ever played. Basically the BlazBlue system with all the bullshit cut out. I play mostly Shadow Labrys and Naoto. Come on, Shabrys has the best voice clips in the game. One of her win screens is her just laughing manically until Asterius finishes destroying the stage.

*upon activating Titanomachina* "This is where your life ends... I'LL ANNIHILATE YOU!"

Really awesome when I actually get that super to work properly. Fucking confusing.

I always liked Naoto the most in Persona 4 so i'm obviously going to play her at least as a sub. Feels like she gets absolutely outclassed as a character in some matchups though. I'll be damned if she can stand up to an Elisabeth. She has a legitimate instakill skill set with the Fate cards (landing Hamoan is my real game plan actually) and her real instakill is pretty much a coin flip as to whether it will work. Y'know, Fortune Arcana? The trick is to stand still and not move at all from what i've seen. That's rather weird... An ace detective can't hit a stationary target?

Far Cry 3 is both fun as a shooter and engaging as a story. The characters are so good and Jason actually has a great character arc. I'm shocked an FPS has such a great story actually. Especially since FC2 was lacking in the story department. I was REALLY burned out on FPS games when it was released so I got it well later than most others.

I'm on the bit after you find Riley. You have to torture him, it's a great scene for Jason as a character really

Yes gaming has "grown up" since the PS2 era, with the western market taking over from the Japanese and the rise of the fratboy fraghead who considers anything unrealistic or colourful as gay or kiddy. Then we have David Cage and other mature gamers wanting mature with a capital E for Emotion.

But I digress as that is a jaded view on modern gaming, the reality is that there are all kinds of games out there and unless you have very narrow tastes there should be something you'll like if you look hard enough. Or a change of gaming hardware could be in order to find what you want.

(I have a sneaking feeling that most of the ppl who make these types of threads tend to stick to one gaming hardware or the same 1 or 2 genres they've played for the last 10 years)

Whenever I'm in the mood for just some simple straight up brain-dead fun I keep Unreal Tournament 2004 installed on my computer for just those moments.

Nothing more satisfying than a fun few rounds of chaotic deathmatch with a variety of fun and clever weapons across a massive library of exotic and interesting locations.
