Funimation and Crunchyroll are entering a joint distribution of anime (that is totally not a merger guys, we swear) where now the two will effectively distribute the same massive library, with Crunchyroll focusing on simulcasts and subs, and Funimation on dubs and physical/digital copy distribution.
Some people are surprised, but I'm not really given that over the past 3 years the two have been jointly distributing more and more anime. The two companies have been close for some time, and it hasn't been unusual for them to have one of their members at an official event of the other. The writing's been on the wall for some time, with the only thing that surprises me is the continued assurances that there is no merger coming.
Oh well, regardless of how things play out, this now means that more then half of all anime released in Japan will be available on each site from now on (Crunchyroll distributed nearly half on its own, and Funimation almost a fifth of all anime produced), which means that Japan notwithstanding each will have more animation distributed then any one country has to offer.
