I've been thinking about getting into game creation, and i'm not sure what programs I should start with. Any advice is welcome, but i'm working on a budget so any cheap or free software I can get would be nice.

If you're getting into gamecreation, I would say Epic's Unreal Development Kit is a must! It's basically the same engine that Epic uses when making their games.

While I havent fiddled around with it too much, I'd say that creating games is rather challenging and time consuming, but I wish you good luck! ;)

PS: You'll also find alot just by googling "How to create games" or such.

Look for something that doesnt require C++ programming, somethink simple like what Yahtzee used (can't remember the name)

Game Maker helps with simple things like varaiables.

You will need time and a creative idea though.

XNA is very good and free.
For something that guides you a little more but is only used for RPG ganes, RPG maker xp, it only has 30 days free though.
And there's game maker 7 though I never got into it.

What I found great and easy-to-use programme was RPGXP (or something like that). It let's you create Pokémon/early Final Fantasy-esque games. Game maker is also good if you don't want to make RPGs.

Game creation is great fun, but very time consuming. What I find is a good place to start is using modding tools for games like Fallout 3 or Oblivion or what-have-you. They helped me get a good feel for game creation as you can stay in a template.

Well, here are some of your options:

-You can use Game Maker to make pretty much anything you want.

-Flixel is a free alternative to Adobe Flash.

-If you like RPGs, and want to make them, you can look into getting one of the RPG Maker engines (VX, XP, 2003, 2000).

-Adventure Game Studio allows you to make adventure games, and is what Yahtzee used to make most of his Chzo Mythos series (Trilby was probably make in Game Maker, but IDK.)

-Epic Games has the Unity 3D engine out for free, so if you're good at 3D modelling, or want to give it a shot, go with that.

-Inform 7 will allow you to create text-based adventures, if that's your cup of tea.

I would link you, but you can just as easily Google search. That, and I don't trust the WiFi on my laptop to last that long, anyway.

The one that I use the most is XNA. It's fairly easy to use if you have decent programming chops, but if you don't, then you may have trouble getting started. The only real drawback to using it is that XNA has a limited platform (Windows .NET and XBox 360). Other than that, you can make some real quality stuff in short order once you get the hang of it.

I have only begun stepping into Unreal, so I don't have a solid opinion on it yet, but it's quite versatile.

SCRATCH - It's a piece of software created by MIT really easy to use and a good starting point...

If you have a source game and Steam, you can download the Source SDK. Look up a tutorial for it.

Do you have any experience? If not don't be in a rush. Your also going to need to know programming. I use Construct for practice. When I'm making a real game I use flash.

Expect to quit within the first 10 minutes.

What tool you'll want completely depends on what sort of game you want to make. I've made a game using Adventure Game Studio, and I'd recommend it for making adventure games or retro RPGs, but if you want to make something else you'll need to say so in order to get any valuable advice.

Can't run UDK. Any requirements needed for it besides the actual programme?

Actually I think that SC2's Galaxy Editor will allow you to make some really cool games. I saw one youtube vid of a 3rd person shooter someone made with it.

What operating system are you running? I had problems running it on Windows XP, but they cleared up when I upgraded to Windows 7.

Running off Windows XP, so that's probably the reason.

Is it reasonably easy to pick up?

I wish I could tell you. To be honest I only played the BETA a little bit, mostly just a few matches here and there with a friend who also had it. I never gave the editor a try, however there was someone who told me it's nowhere near as straight forward as the SC1 editor was. I guess I'll just have to wait and see, I have the game sitting here at my desk and just a few more hours till I can go home and install it lol.
