I did do a search (twice) assuming there would be numerous threads asking this exact same question..but I couldn't seem find one.. if there already are threads like this: apologies for my incompetence :p

I'll go with The Elder Scrolls, The lores extremely deep/detailed/interesting and it seems to have very few errors or inconsistencies (especially considering the massive scope of the games)

Not a franchise, but a game: Dark Souls. Check out ENB's videos on it, shit goes fucking DEEP.

World of Warcraft has a crazy amount of lore so it's really hard for them to keep it consistent as red shirt guy pointed out.

I'll agree with Elder Scrolls, there's a ton of lore and it goes very deep.

I didn't like the game but Dragon Age has good a lot of good lore. Mass Effect as well. Fallout those have some good lore. But I think I like fallout the most, it's got a lot more themes like how the human race can destroy it's self( Mother-ship zeta didn't' happen).

Well, how about Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines (and Redemption) here? Or more like the entire World of Darkness franchise (of which VtM is part of, Bloodlines/Redemption are offshoots). Would you consider this a viable franchise? If so, I'd go for that. If not, I'll probably go for the Elder Scrolls series.

Baldur's Gate/Neverwinter Nights etc

...need i type "./thread"?
Those are based off on D&D, they only have rich lore because they had over a decades worth of preexisting lore from a different medium to co-opt.

But for a game series that actually made its own lore instead of hijacking it, elder scrolls, as mentioned before.

Shit goes DDDDEEEEEEEEPPPP!!!!

Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect and Fallout come immediately to mind. Deus Ex as well (although not on the level of the previous three).

The KoToR series has a ton of lore which wasn't part of Star Ware lore previously I think.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 alone introduce so much of their own lore that they can be considered deep games in their own right. And if we're talking about 'rich' lore then Baldur's Gate 2 alone would give any game a run for it's money. And probably win.

It's really easy for people to say Elder Scrolls is a lore mine. I love that series - and I'm sure I'm one of only a handful of posters on this forum who actually played each Elder Scrolls game before the next one came out - and it is definitely a great series for Lore but it is just too obvious that people are instantly thinking of it because of skyrim.

What about Ultima, what about Baldur's Gate games, Deus Ex's timeline is ever expanding and very well fleshed out, what about the Jedi Knight games? And what about KOTOR etc? What about Zelda? Hyrule must be one of the most thoroughly explored fantasy realms in gaming history - we've even seen what it looks like thousands of years in it's future when it's all flooded!

I mean these games in themselves have fantastic lore, even if they are not as extensively scripted or as popular among today's gamers.
All star wars games are non-canon and thus their lore is entirely pointless. Star Wars.... well anything except the movies, hold the same status as fan-finciton, the only difference being this is good fan-fiction that got published.

Zelda is pretty good though.

Deus Ex is ok, I wouldn't say its deep in terms of having lots of lore, but deep in that what lore it has is expanded upon a lot.

Who cares if the Star Wars games aren't canon? I chose myself what is personal anon and not...so I say it's canon for me!!

Dragon Age. Dragon Age has craploads of great lore from just the 2 games that are out!

D&D and Warhammer Fantasy / 40K have my vote, those old table top games have enough lore and backstory written about them to fill a libary, Games Workshop has been publishing the magazine White Dwarf for around 25 years with lore and stories in each issue.

This is my vote aswell. It's a bjillion years of constant lore attack, only half of which then got taken back out.

I'd go with SWTOR. I had so much fun with that game until my computer buckled :(

For a setting created specifically for games, I think the Warcraft universe takes the prize. Its only issue is WoW's necessary "gameplay first" mentality, which results in some retconning of older games and inconsistencies. Despite this, I think it's one of the most fleshed-out and flavoured high fantasy setting out there.
