The pieces were coming together. The game board was taking shape. Soon the great game would begin.
Standing over a shimmering pool of light, a gangly figure poked and prodded with his staff. Tall and decrepit, the creature murmured inconsequentially to itself. Illuminated by the otherworldly light, the twisted being?s form was a shocking assault on reality. A mighty bird head nodded as it spoke arcane rituals, great scaly fingers contorting into various symbols. Sprouting out from robes of a continuously-shifting hue were two immense feathered wings, slowly molting from inactivity. This was a servant of the Chaos God Tzeentch; a dreaded Lord of Change. The monster and his kin often manipulated the very fabric of the universe to further the Great Plan, and for their general amusement. However, this one worked furiously, with a purpose.

The beast?s name, unspeakable by mortal tongues, had been lost to the ages. Called The Charlatan by the Eldar, the Merchant of Lies by the Tau, and Da Great Flappy Winged Fing by the Orks, the Daemon cared not for titles. When he consorted with his mortal playthings, he preferred the alias of For?Lall?Khai?Naan; translated loosely into ?The Shifter of Fates? in the ancient tongue of Terra, it spoke of it?s true purpose in this world. The Shifter of Fates delighted in shattering the very flow of the future, causing cataclysm across the galaxy. While his schemes often benefited the Great Plan very little, or even directly opposed it, the Shifter cared not. He enjoyed watching his pawns playing their own game, reinventing the rules of the game by the minute. Now, he prepared for his greatest show?now he was ready to set up his game.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All across the galaxy, great portals of light burst into form for a split second. In the time it took for a rat?s heart to beat, many vanished from the known universe. When they awoke, they were disoriented and lost, with no guide other than a maniacal cackling ringing in their ears.

Hey guys, I?ve been missing the RP/Game forums recently, and so I thought I would try my own game. For this game, it will be a simple character bash from the Warhammer 40,000 universe. All are welcome, regardless of your knowledge of the universe, but it is first come, first serve. For those new to a character bash, you write up the most powerful, terrifying, ?Kick-ass-and-chew-bubblegum?* character you can, and we throw them against each other in a tournament-style battle royale until there is only one left standing. Here are the rules for making your character, just for starters.

*[sub]There is no gum[/sub]

1). Your character must be an HQ choice from a current WH40K codex, with a maximum points limit of 200 points.
2). No special characters!
3). While it?s not necessary, a back story for your character is very helpful. Give him/her/it some character, and in turn he/she/it will have a more interesting description for their epic clash with their foe.
4). Only one player can have a single type of character. For example, there will only be one Wolf Lord for the Space Wolves, one Ork Warboss, and so on. There can be more than one entry per race, but not more than one entry per unit type. So get your choice in soon, so you get your preference.

Any of those interested, please PM me so I can approve your choice (make sure it?s legal, etc), and then prepare for glory. Anyone who is interested, but doesn?t know anything about Warhammer 40,000, never fear! I can write up a character for anyone interested, and they can play through that way. Just check out the Warhammer 40,000 races at http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/landing.jsp?catId=cat370002&rootCatGameStyle= and then let me know which one you like the looks of; if that character is free, I?ll write you up one.

In closing, let the games begin.

UPDATE May 21, 2010

2). Colonel Eric Van Krugen and the 16th Bastion Assault Infantry (Imperial Guard Command Squad, fighting for Shanaar)
3). Boss Grott-Smack'ar (Ork Warboss, fighting for Citrisfr00t)
4). Commissar-General Marcus Antioch (Lord Commissar, fighting for Not_the_DM)
5). The Dark One (Chaos Sorceror of Tzeentch, fighting for Dark Knifer)
6). Incarael Ferrik, Forge Master for Kaargul Clan company (Space Marine Master of the Forge, fighting for MadMechanic)
7). Dusk's Reaper (Tyranid Hive Tyrant, fighting for DJDuskReborn) OR Grandmaster Maximillian Valenthyne (Grey Knight Grand Master, fighting for Zannah)

Here he is!

Name: Tomb Lord Malifact
Race: The Necrons
Unit: Necron Lord

Appearance:

Height: 8'3 ft

Equipment:

Warscthye (15): The pinnacle of Necron technology, the Warscythe is capable of slicing through any object irrespective of its physical properties. Energy shields, armour and even daemonic bodies are of no defence against a Warscythe. It also has a gauss blaster built into the shaft.

Scarab Gauntlet (15): This item resembles a Scarab, and is clamped to the Necron Lord's wrist. At a whim, the Gauntlet will unleash a swarm of tiny attack-scarabs, which can burrow under an enemies armor and strip the flesh from their bones (1st edition weapon, D6 AP4 attacks)

Phylacteryl (15 points): It is a small item containing small spider-like creatures with powerful repair capabilities. If the Necron Lord has received significant damage the creatures swarm over the Lords body, re-knitting his frame, allowing the Lord to continue the fight.

Phase shifter (25 points):Once used, the Phase Shifter becomes part of the Necron Lord and to the enemies of the Necrons, it seems as if the entire fabric of the Lord is fuzzy and shifted. Even the strongest weapons will pass through the Lord as he is now incorporeal, while he strikes back with his usual force. This effect is similar to that of the Wraiths except to a much greater extent due to this effect being a passive ability.

Gaze of flame (15 points): Eldritch flames flicker in the sockets of the Lord's metal skull, causing even the fiercest warrior to take pause before charging. (Gameplay rules: you gain no bonus to a charge against this unit. This applies even to units you would think are immune to such effects, such as Daemons or tyrannids)

Lightning Field (30 points) : energy flickers along the Necron Lords carapace, bright coils of lightning streaking across it's form. Any strike landed against the Lord in close-combat will cause the assailant to be struck by lightning (strength 3 hit, unnavoidable, no armor saves allowed)

Bio: Malifact is an ancient being, one of the generals who fought against the Old Ones in the Void War. Bearing the combat experience of eons of warfare, this Necron found himself plucked from the heart of his Tomb World by sudden warp-portal, and cast into an arena in the bowels of the warp. Unbeknownst to Tzeentch (or is it?) this abudction was planned by a being even older than the Schemer... a creature which drank of the birthing pains of the stars when the warp was but a nascent fledgling, a freshly birthed place free of the horrors which now plague it. The Deceiver, as he is known, is one of the most ancient of the C'tan, and has planned for this "encounter". Indeed, it is one he takes great amusement from, pitting one of his heartless Generals against the Champions of the mortal realms.

The first pawn had stepped through the portal, light reflecting of the surface of it's body. It was a Necron, an ancient automaton serving the Star Gods. In his hands he wielded a humming warscythe, a weapon with a deadly reputation even amongst the servants of the Chaos Gods. His body, tarnished and dull due to it's immense age, was also covered in a all-encompassing field of lightning. His eyes, emotionless and always open, blazed with an emerald flame. He was a mighty champion, and would serve his purpose well.

The Shifter sat back on it's throne of crystal, lazily stirring the stream of spacetime. Clearly the currents of the Warp were more turbulent than usual, delaying his other victims from arriving on time to face each other. For now, he would just have to observe his first contender, enjoying thoughts of slaughter yet to come...

Come on guys, you can't let the Necrons win this one by default! Who will be next to enter the arena? A valiant Space Marine? A horrifying Tyranid? A Barbarous Ork? Only time (and Tzeentch) will tell.

The Shifter blinked, chuckling slightly at this turn of events. It seems one of his portals drew in an unexpected bounty, and gathered five humans for the slaughter. Glancing at the strands of the newly-formed past, the Daemon saw the whole event unfold; the bold commander, young even by the standards of humans, sat hunkered down in a trench. The man glared over the wall of the trench at the exlosions of the artillery, the mighty Citadel of Neca II shuddering with each impact.

His powerfist hummed and crackled with a low energy field, and he calmly ordered his men into action. To his very-stressed medic, he urged the preparation for imminent treatment of any casualties for the coming battle. He turned to two privates standing side by side, the foolhardy men checking the condition of their lethal (if unstable) weapons. Finally turning to the last member of the squad, the Commander urged his compatriot to use control; grinning maniacally, the man ignited his cruel flamethrower and prepared to unleash it.

"Right, here's the plan. Now listen up, because I'm only gonna say it once. Central's ordered us in on the flank, to clean up any leftovers. Boris, I want you keepin' both eyes peeled, ready to cook anything wearing more than a shirt and an aquilla. Rookie.....Max....whatever your name is, I want you to fire on my orders only. I don't wanna have to train another rookie, and I don't wanna hafta report you dead....too much paperwork. Doc, make sure ya got some gauss ready, and keep some salve out as well; with the noob and the firebug around, never hurts to have somethin' ta treat burns. Jenkins, you put fire to anything without my sayso again, and I'll have you sent to a backwater asteroid herdin Grox by hand. Now then, follow me...for the Emperor!"

Turning around with a swish of his cloak, the Commander walked right into a bright flash of light. Accompanying the flash was a loud bang and a cloud of dirt. An off-target shell scattered into the trenches, launching Van Krugen and his men into the air. In that instant, with the Commander flailing wildly in the air at the apex of his accent, another flash vanished the squad from the battle.

.....Van Krugen and his men would be reported as M.I.A., leaving them dead in the eyes of the Imperial Guard High Command. But to the eyes of the Lord of Change, they were much more....they were a worthy competitor.

The Necron Lord's skull slowly swiveled to peer down at the newcomers, it's data-system analyzing their bio signiature: Humans. The word was unfamiliar, but the images it brought to "mind" were not. An endless war, swarms of khaki-clad troops swarming outwards, a withered corpse seated upon a vast, continental throne.

Humans. Pawns in the Star Gods endless war against the Living. They would not pose a problem to him. It nodded imperceptibly, before setting it's sights on the weapons they bore. A whirring buzz sounded out as the logitech kicked in, and an emotion registered as it analyzed the primitive weapons they bore.

It was contempt.

Plasma-evocator, Flesh variant 134007: Possible Threat. Damage irreparable. Succeptible to overheating; advised to use Lightning arc to destabilize

Explosive projectile-launcher, flesh variant 120005673: Inconsequential. Damage resistible.

Close-quarters energized assault weapon, mechanized product 3456009: Threat. Damage irreparable. Strike first to disable

Low-focus energy-beam weapon, Flesh variant 255009: Inconsequential. Damage resistible. Ignore.

Flame/oil weapon... unrecognized. Analyzing. >>>>> Inconsequential. Damage resistible. Ignore.

Heat-focus weapon... unrecognized. Analyzing. >>>>> High Threat. Damage fatal. Priority Target. Disable if able.

It's computations completed in less than a milisecond, it gripped it's Warscthye tightly, the ancient Necrontyr runes flickering to life across it's gleaming metal surface. It would reap a bountiful harvest for the Star Gods... but it knew that more were coming. And so it would wait.

((Will they fight as an entire squad during the "tournament?"))

Firstly, many thanks Malifact! I'm going to give it another day or so, before I start implementing my evil back-up plans. Come on, Escapists! You don't want Irish unleashing any evil plans.

....do you?

Also, the Command Squad will fight as a group in the tournament. Shanaar ran it by me first, and his squad met my conditions. I figured that the lack of ID weaponry, plus a poor armor save at best, was supplemented by the extra wounds.

I think I'll give this a go. I've never tried one of these things and it sounds like fun. Reserve me a Chaos Sorceror if you don't mind, and I'll try to think of a backstory for him.

WOOOHOOOOOOOOOO

IT IS ALIIIIIIIIIVE XD

This going to be so sweet... but how will the combat work? I mean, will it be like a progression-style tournament? two people face off, the winner goes on to fight the person who won their match, etc etc?

However it goes, I'm freakin' pysched for this >=D

Oh, and isn't the Avatar of Khaine a special character? (And even if it isn't, I think it might be a bit OP for a simple 1v1 tournament.)

**Edit, I checked the GW site... it's a monstrous creature. Doesn't say anything about it being a special character, though, so could someone check their Eldar Codex, if they have one?

Still a bit unfair, IMHO, seeing as nothing short of a Carnifex/Nightbringer/Chapter Master could hope to take it down one-on-one. Sorry if my worrying get's on anyones nerves, but I'm just concerned that if someone does decide to use one, they'll powermod their way straight to the top.

Yay! More victims competitors!

[sub]boo, no evil plans[/sub]

Welcome to the match-up, guys. Not_the_DM, Dark Knifer, consider the Lord Commissar and Chaos Sorceror reserved for you guys respectively.

EDIT: Malifact, you raise a good point in respects to the Avatar. While he is really tough, he's not invincible; with the exception of WS, most of his profile is comparable to other HQ choices (except, of course, toughness). However, he is not immune to ID, has an average Invul save at best, and is vulnerable to force weapons (and Warscythes :p)

I'll have a closer look at his rules, and then decide. It'll only really be a tough call if somebody actually wants to play an Avatar.
