Title says it all. Who, from the characters of GOT, would you want to ultimately end up as the one who sits on the throne and rules everything? For the record, this thread is not limited to characters who are actively trying to get it, but any character from the series (TV and books together).

One man has proven himself time and time again to be worthy to run the seven kingdoms. Kind, gentle, generous, and above all, wise beyond measure.

If we're going by the books, that Egg guy from Egg and Dunk seems to be pretty on the ball. Give him a few years and he might be a halfway decent ruler in his own right.

...but yeah, it's totally gonna end up being Stannis. At least in the books. In the TV series, it's probably going to end up being Daenerys, because people like her.

It's going to end up both good and bad, because of George's "bitter-sweet" mentality

IMO

It's ether going to end up with the fan favourite situation:

The Targaryen threesome married and ruling.

Daenerys Targaryen
John Targaryen (John Snow the love baby of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark)
Tyrion Targaryen (Tyrion Lannister the rape baby of Aerys II Targaryen and Joanna Lannister)

Somewhat of a reverse Aegon situation.

And then they will finish in some kind of fucked up circumstances. Like 90% all of Westeros will be stuck in winter permanently or at least most of Westeros will be dead.

Or it's going to be a bad guy win situation:

Little Finger wins after virtually every single major character dies (allot through his doing) except for Sansa who will be stuck his unhappy Queen(likely after learning he caused everything that pretty much fucked up her life).

But Westeros itself will be pretty much saved and fine.

You do realize that those stories take part a century before the main books.

Theon.

Serious answer. Uh...at this point nobody. Maybe Stannis, I don't like him very much but he should be able to do a competent job, bring some stability and while I don't give a shit about right by blood (can you really even claim that when your lot overthrew the royal line a short time ago and there is no history of your line on the throne?) with how the world setting is it that might be a good thing.

Yes. That was the joke.

what i want is for ol George R. R. Martin to just crack under the pressure and just spew some utter crap to end it , like have the Americans invade and democrotise these heathens. like go full bore nuts, lets have b-29's carpet bombing kings landing. just so when the TV show deviates from the books on this one we can throw back all the years of the "the books are soo much better" at all these readers who think there so damn special!

Stannis Baratheon.

Not only is he the true legal heir of Robert, he's also the most competent, and just.

Him, Davos and Melisandre are my favorite characters.

I kinda want Jaime to take the Throne. I mean he is going to have to kill his sister as she is slowly going crazy and will refuse to give it up when Tommen comes of age. And/or seriously piss everyone else off until everyone wants her dead. History will repeat itself, he will kill the ruler and instead of giving up his claim, he will take it this time in the belief that no one else is capable.

Calling it now, Jaime will kill Cersie (unless she dies in one of the books I haven't got to reading yet).

Or some character that up until now has been in the background, literally in the background pouring wine or something who will see the vacuum in power and think "fuck it, the Iron Throne is mine". That would blow some minds. Except mine because I came up with the idea.

Arthas, the Lich King. Might as well, he fits right in with the way the rest of the people of that world live and would be the only one who probably could handle the coming Winter and the walkers... Either that or he'd be the one running the walkers and the world would be a dead one...

Daenerys Targaryen with Tyrion as her hand, I mean think about between the two of them you have a just ruler with lots of power and someone who knows how the game works and how to win.

Obviously Stannis the Mannis.

The shows none-too-subtle attempts to paint him as a villain (Creepy fetus jars anyone?) haven't worked on me, he's the only one with a legitimate legal claim to the throne[footnote]Dany was ousted by force, the exact same way the Targaryens came to power in the first place, the realm belongs to House Baratheon by right of conquest. Daenerys' claim is null and void and if it isn't then Tyrion Lannister is also the legitimate King of the Rock, Robert Arryn is the legitimate King of the Mountain and the Vale and so on.[/footnote] and he is also the only claimant who acts with a single iota of consistency and sense of justice.

Jon Snow as the Nights King with an army of the undead soldiers, wolves, an ice dragon, and a dead Azor Ahai laying upon the ground while the Red Keep is surrounded in a kingdom of eternal ice and darkness...

Stannis would be the most competent choice, his association with the fire priests aside, he is a fair and just bloke who gives a damn about the kingdom and its protection. His rule would be a competent and efficient one which would get Westeros back on its feet.
Which is why of course he can never be king. :/

Honestly I'll take anyone as long as it's not Daenerys, I find little to like about her as a leader.
Feeding possible innocents to her dragons in a petulant fit of rage has pretty much sealed it for me.

Out of the non candidates though?

Jaime Lannister xD Losing his hand has transformed the dude into king material. Though there were already some signs he had it in him: there aren't many people who would have reneged their oaths to the king in order to save king's landing from being burnt. Even the hyper praised Ser Barristan stood by watching the Mad King, it was only Jaime who broke his vow for the greater good, and all that to be hated for it.

Jon Snow would also probably make for a good king if he was dropped into the role.

Tough call.

First I should say I've only read through book 4 and only seen up to season 3 of the show. Undoubtedly there are developments I'm unaware of.

I like Tyrion. I mean, everyone likes Tyrion, but I like him for the throne. Having listened to his father and attended high council, he knows politics. Feeling the sharp end of the hate stick all his life has given him a deep understanding of people's capacity for nastiness and great empathy for victims and little guys everywhere. He doesn't suffer fools, even when they're in line for the throne. He shows courage when it counts. He has at least some grasp of his own limitations. He is intellectually astute and has proven he can handle power games. Not only that, he greatly enjoyed his time as Hand, which suggests he won't get too bored with kinging. The drinking and whoring might be embarrassing from time to time but Tyrion would still be an order of magnitude better than Robert ever was.

Jaime Lannister would be a good choice. He's intelligent, skilled in war, and since losing his hand has realized greater virtue almost by the day. His epiphany that he never liked himself and can be a better man than he ever thought spurs him on to....I was about to say nobility, I'm not sure if I'd go that far. He'd have to run a hell of a PR campaign to get past the whole Kingslayer thing, but we the audience know he broke his vow to stop a madman and save a kingdom. If that's not worth compromising an oath, I don't know what is.

Stannis, at first glance, believes in right and law. He also has the best legal claim. On the other hand, he's willing to commit adultery with a witch to win a fight. He is also "the brittle steel that breaks rather than the good steel that bends" or however it's phrased in the books. Basically he's a fanatic. You don't want a fanatic on the throne, even if his obsession is justice. You just know it's going to be that kind of justice: Stannis would create a system of rigid laws, draconian punishments, and omnipotent inquisitors, all hopelessly mired by his inability to understand what the law is actually for. He'll save Westeros by destroying it.

Then there's Daenerys. Passionate, dedicated to good, blessed with undeniable power....but prone to decisions that are morally right but carry onerous consequences. Daenerys is unlikely to provide the stabilizing force Westeros needs. What she will have instead is dragons, which ultimately means a return to the Targaryen policy of ruling through fear.

It pains me to say this but Littlefinger might just be the best choice. He's brilliant, calculating, and ruthless. He doesn't care about people, just money and the long game. This means the economy will flourish, the crown's debts will be settled, and the citizenry will be left almost completely alone as long as their modest taxes are paid. Scheming capitalism FTW.

I vote Stannis, the one true Mannis of Westeros. He will bring justice to the land - justice and copious grinding of teeth.

Did you know that 4 out of 5 doctors recommend Stannis? And the fifth doctor is a dirty traitor that we won't have to worry about much longer. He fights battles, listens to smugglers, hugs daughters, and doesn't even break a sweat. He's a lean, mean, kingly machine, and he won't stop at just that. He dances at cheap suburban parties for a modest sum, and dines with middle-class families for only a moderate fee. People say he's a god, but he doesn't believe in himself. Every brothel within a hundred miles automatically closes when he approaches, and onion salesmen rain from the skies. His hands are strong enough to crush steel, but delicate enough to kill traitors. He is universal, all-knowing, all-destroying, and hungry. There is no Stannis but Stannis, and Stannis is the messenger of Stannis.

All of this is well known.
