If you've played video games for as long as you can remember like me, you've played a metric shit-tonne of them. Some of them memorable, others not so much. But there is always that one game, one of the first you ever played, where even just a snippet of the soundtrack brings memories flooding back in a tidal wave of nostalgia.

Mine is the theme from the Green Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog.
Back when the franchise was a big hitter, back before all the horrible characters were added, back before the move to 3D killed the blue hedgehog.

This is the soundtrack of my childhood, hell, I even have it as the ringtone for my mobile phone, and I just need a dose of the track and I'll be humming it all day.

So, fellow escpastists. What game OST defines your childhood?

I'd probably have to go with Sonic also.

Was a really punchy and bright soundtrack. Very memorable.

My childhood was rather varied.

Monster Bash had this as a theme... I think. Or was it Haunted House?
Can't remember. Long time ago now...

Then in the N64 era,

When I was in my teens, this one kicked off something mighty.

I was gonna name FF X, but that wasn't really my childhood. I was already older than. So I'm gonna name Sonic's OST that defined my childhood. As well as Bart's Nightmare http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x08YYp0_wh8
And come on! Mario!

The FFVII soundtrack, if I haer a piece of music from it I can either name it or name locations it plays in.

Also Pokemon and Mario soundtracks, these must do something to my brain because I can hear them after I've turned off the game.

I also have a tendency to associate Music with games, like whenever I hear Bohemian Rhapsody I think of Shadow of the Colossus.

Ah the Amiga. So many memories.
This game had no sound effects, all it had was it's soundtrack. And it works. :)

EDIT: Bah, I can't remember how to insert youtube links >.<

I could do the obvious thing and post the FFVII soundtrack or BG2, but there's something that predates them:

I can remember mentally adding lyrics to the notes whenever I played the game.

If we're talking music that defines my childhood, THIS is first and foremost it. This was the first ever game I played on a console and it will forever have a place in my heart:

Also, this game had an amazing soundtrack, every zone had unique, distinct music and the artwork was fantastic, this game is beyond underrated.

Can I be a bit different? What really influenced me was the Transformers the Movie OST. It was the first time I had come into contact with guitar music and I LOVED IT!

If you are going to force me to pick a game OST, then I guess Xenon II. It was one of the first games to get itself a proper soundtrack that wasn't bings and pips and simulated plinky plonky music.

Final Fantasy VIII, 'twas the second coming of Christ for me, the best game ever, with the best OST. FF8 will forever have a place in my heart, and I haven't even completed it.

Two for my childhood:

Pretty much anything from those two games.

Try playing them at the same time!

Sounds really crappy, don't it?
