First off I want to start by saying that I am by no means poor at platfom games. Ever since the first mario on the NES I have enjoyed platformers alot and became quite skilled at them. So you will understand the gravity of my words when I tell you that this game can accurately be described as HARD AS FUCK.

I wanna be the guy is a freeware 2D platformer game that can be downloaded from its home site (do a google search for I wanna be the guy. It?s the first link). The player controls a tiny main character, known as the kid, that seeks to become the guy. To do so he must collect 6 units and defeat 8 bosses. The kid uses a little gun, useless in most situations, to fight off what few enemies there are as well as combat bosses.

The challenge comes from the games level layouts, which could only have been designed using pure concentrated evil. To designer Kayin?s credit, that was his goal in making this game, to make the hardest game he possible could, while still making it beatable. There are entire mazes of spikes you must navigate while on moving platforms where you have just enough space for your character at any time, traps and enemies that literally come out of nowhere, and screens full of danger that you must clear at high speeds. No matter how good a gamer you might be, I wanna be the guy is going to humble you. Then its going to beat you. Then its going to whip out a large steel bar, break it over your head, and leave you by the side of the road for the vultures.

There are actually a great many traps that are next to impossible to be prepared for unless you have seen them before, and even when you are prepared will often kill you repeatedly. Thankfully (or perhaps not) there is no life limit in this game, merely a death count. Players can make as many attempts as they wish. The game also has save points, usually 1 every 2 screens or so, which preven the player having to go too far back when they die. I say when because it is impossible to beat this game without dying, as there is no health bar or hit point system. You get hit by anything, you die instantly.

The interesting thing to note is that the games fun actually comes from it being so ball breakingly difficult. It becomes a great success to players when you simply make it to the next save point as opposed to beating the game (which is nigh on a legendary accomplishment). The game also pays homage to many great games of the past such as metroid, super mario, megaman, castlevania, tetris, punch out, and ghouls and ghosts, which adds a fun nostalgia factor to the game.

All in all, despite being a game that completely rewrites the defenition of being unfair to the player, I wanna be the guy is a masterfully designed game, with the traps being not just difficult, but very clever, and I heartilly reccomend it to anyone looking for a challenge, especially if you think your gaming skills are bad ass.

The entire genre ("masocore" I believe it's called) seeems to me more of a thought experiment than a viable form of entertainment. They took the idea of a "hardcore" game and took it to its logical conclusion - one that's so hard that you spend more time dying than you do actually playing the game.

But maybe I'm just a n00b :p

Nice way to sum it up. I gave this game a try after hearing of it before watching any video farther than the apples. I regret it, this game will throw you off a cliff, use forge to summon a storm of Fusion coils (excuse the Halo comparison) and bash you until your brain explodes. Only play this game if you truly are an EXPERT at platforming with A LOT of patience. Oh, or if you want to literally go insane. *Shrugs*

God, I hate this game. I gave up on it in a few minutes right after I fainted from frustration. /sarcasm obviously!

Not a bad review, but most of it was just praising how difficult IWBTG is.

Honestly, I don't think you served the game's difficulty justice, but then, mere words cannot begin to express how brutal the game can be.

Probably the worst part is how addicting the game is. Whereas other insanely difficult games make the player want to simply stop playing after a dozen or so deaths, IWBTG keeps you interested enough to keep going for that "one more try". These "one more try"s will usually number in the hundreds, since you generally make a bit more progress each time you respawn, getting you slightly closer to the next elusive savepoint. I remember spending over an hour on one jump, since I would get a bit closer to the pixel-perfect accuracy I needed each time, always feeling like I could do it in "one more try", and wanting to see what unique trap the sadistic creater had laid for me in the next room.

IWBTG is definitely a game for masochists. Not only is the difficulty level obsene, but it's fun enough to make you not want to put it down when you sorely need time to relax.

The game is a huge throwback to the NES/Master System console days. There's an unbelievable number of games that verge on being a steamer just like this (to me anyway). I thought trial and error gaming was dead already.

There's hard, and then there's tedious, unrewarding and bland.

I like 'difficult' games, I just do not like games where the only attraction is the difficulty.

I second this verdict.

This game is so hard it even throws me at the damn start up menu. I just mash 'A' and end up in an inescapable pit.
