First off I want to start by saying that I am by no means poor at platfom games. Ever since the first mario on the NES I have enjoyed platformers alot and became quite skilled at them. So you will understand the gravity of my words when I tell you that this game can accurately be described as HARD AS FUCK.
I wanna be the guy is a freeware 2D platformer game that can be downloaded from its home site (do a google search for I wanna be the guy. It?s the first link). The player controls a tiny main character, known as the kid, that seeks to become the guy. To do so he must collect 6 units and defeat 8 bosses. The kid uses a little gun, useless in most situations, to fight off what few enemies there are as well as combat bosses.
The challenge comes from the games level layouts, which could only have been designed using pure concentrated evil. To designer Kayin?s credit, that was his goal in making this game, to make the hardest game he possible could, while still making it beatable. There are entire mazes of spikes you must navigate while on moving platforms where you have just enough space for your character at any time, traps and enemies that literally come out of nowhere, and screens full of danger that you must clear at high speeds. No matter how good a gamer you might be, I wanna be the guy is going to humble you. Then its going to beat you. Then its going to whip out a large steel bar, break it over your head, and leave you by the side of the road for the vultures.
There are actually a great many traps that are next to impossible to be prepared for unless you have seen them before, and even when you are prepared will often kill you repeatedly. Thankfully (or perhaps not) there is no life limit in this game, merely a death count. Players can make as many attempts as they wish. The game also has save points, usually 1 every 2 screens or so, which preven the player having to go too far back when they die. I say when because it is impossible to beat this game without dying, as there is no health bar or hit point system. You get hit by anything, you die instantly.
The interesting thing to note is that the games fun actually comes from it being so ball breakingly difficult. It becomes a great success to players when you simply make it to the next save point as opposed to beating the game (which is nigh on a legendary accomplishment). The game also pays homage to many great games of the past such as metroid, super mario, megaman, castlevania, tetris, punch out, and ghouls and ghosts, which adds a fun nostalgia factor to the game.
All in all, despite being a game that completely rewrites the defenition of being unfair to the player, I wanna be the guy is a masterfully designed game, with the traps being not just difficult, but very clever, and I heartilly reccomend it to anyone looking for a challenge, especially if you think your gaming skills are bad ass.
