Hey friends -

In anticipation to play Fallout 4, I have been really itching to play some fallout again. Thing is, I've clocked so many hours and played the same quests so much that replaying the same games (even with DLC) won't really cut it.

Do you guys know of any good post-apocalyptic/survival/RPG games that one could play while they wait for the big release?

If you want something that resembles the more recent Fallout games, you might want to try Rage. It's a bit buggy and has a very rushed final mission and ending, but otherwise it has fun gameplay and good atmosphere. It's not an RPG though - it's an open-world shooter in a post-apocalyptic setting.

If you want something that resembles the classic Fallout games, I understand that Wasteland 2, which was designed by the same people as Fallout 1 & 2, is very similar, but I haven't played it myself. Shadowrun: Dragonfall is also similar, except it's in a fantasy cyberpunk setting rather than post-apocalyptic.

If you haven't played the classic Fallout games, now's your chance.

If you haven't played the first two fallouts, give them a shot. They're a bit different but in some ways much better(then 3 particulary).

Tactics is....optional. In fact, it feels like another game with a fallout skin put on it.

Which Fallouts do you mean?

1 and 2, or 3 and New Vegas?
The two most recent; 3 and New Vegas.
While I have a great respect for the earlier games, I am not interested in sifting through lots of text and turn-based combat.

Metro. It's different from a gameplay prospective in that it's not a open world. (Except that one DLC) It's a really neat setting though. Might also want to look at STALKER.

I would definitely give Metro a crack. While it's not like Fallout and is a linear FPS, it does a fantastic job of building atmosphere, and is damn near haunting in parts.

Also heard good things about the STALKER series, though I've yet to play them myself.

STALKER is probably your best bet. It falls a little more on the shooter side than Fallout does, but it still offers an open world (though I'd say less so than Fallout), a decent mix of shooter and RPG elements, and a fantastic atmosphere. That said, despite being great, the games are incredibly buggy and prone to crashing (though I think I had far more problems with Fallout 3 on PC in terms of crashing), so you'll definitely need to patch them up. Still can't recommend them enough, though.

Along with that, Metro 2033 is a great game and Last Light, from what I've heard, is also excellent. However, at least with 2033, the game is rather linear and definitely falls on the "shooter" side of things. As a result, it loses a lot of the appeal of the Fallout games. Still, they offer some of the best post-apocalyptic atmospheres out there, sometimes even better than STALKER or Fallout. As a result, I would at least keep an eye on them during one of these summer sales, but if you're looking for a more Fallout-like game, I would say STALKER is still the better bet.

If you haven't played them I recommend actually trying Fallout 1 & 2. If you've played them and dislike them then that's fine. But if you like Fallout 3 and New Vegas and haven't played them then you should check them out. Yeah, they're different but you never know, you might actually like them.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines isn't that much like Fallout 3 and New Vegas. It's rather different in terms of setting. But it's really good (when it's not awful, fuck that hour long sewer section,) it's still a first person RPG where you can use guns, melee, speech and stealth. Until you get to the later parts and it's all combat. Yeah, game's a mixed bag but I still recommend it.

Another vote for STALKER.
