GameFront is shutting down

Well, they finally did it. After hacking off nearly all the staff and leaving the site to be run on life support by a dedicated and somewhat underappreciated skeleton crew, DEFY appears to be sharpening its axe again. No word yet as to whether another site, like ModDB, is going to take over file hosting to save all those mods from the chopping block, but this is certainly more notice than we usually get.

Okay, I gotta ask, what's with the ALL-CAPS spelling of "Defy"? You've done that in a few different places now, so it can't be a simple typo. It just seems like you're shouting their name every time you post it.

OT: They said the same thing about GameTrailers, and yet it's still up. So meh, I'm not worried.

Gah! Quickly, someone archive all the files before it's too late (I would but, y'know...potato of a computer and all that)!

Sad news indeed. I have many fond memories of downloading files for games like Jedi Outcast and Dawn of War during my high school and college years.

What makes this all the more surreal is that FileFront was one of the premier mod networks up until a handful of years ago. ModDB may have been the go-to place for big projects like total conversions, but FileFront was a good alternative for the little stuff, like reskins and gameplay tweaks. If you ever experienced a case of "man, if only this game had a little more _____," there was a 95% chance that FileFront had you covered.

I called it when they closed down FileFront (last year was it?). It was inevitable. Very sad to see it go. I remember using that site pretty much exclusively to download mods.

I guess being a purely gaming website without all the clickbait and political and SJW shit is simply bad for business.

It's a sad day for us, to be sure, but as many say, the writing has been on the wall for some time.

FileFront was awesome back in the day! It's nice to know a lot of people appreciate the absolute shed-load of hard work a lot of volunteers and staff put into it over the years.

OT: They said the same thing about GameTrailers, and yet it's still up. So meh, I'm not worried.

The site is dead though. All the guys from GT have already moved on and started a new group on Patreon/Youtube/Twitch after being fired. So Gamefront certainly won't be disappearing physically just yet, but they will be stopping any and all production soon, if not immediately.

OT: As a big fan of GameTrailers, I certainly know the feeling fans of Gamefront are going through. If they have a decent fan base, they should try and reorganize to do their own thing. It has worked very well for GT guys to go completely independent.

Anybody get the feeling that Defy is the internet media version of those alien civilizations that hop from planet to planet, using up all of the natural resources and kill all the local lifeforms culminating in them destroying the planet and moving onto the next doomed world?

We need some sort of Last, Best Hope for Internet Humanity. We need a Superman. Or Goku. Or a Nick Fury to gather them all. I've got it!

Ouch. Yeah, that's exactly what happened at GT. One Monday, they were told in the middle of the day that it was the last day of Gametrailers. Sad to hear it happened to Gamefront like that too.
