So I was in history today and my professor was explaining what in life leads to happiness. He was drawing some life diagram on the board and put down what most people do. it went high school-> higher education-> job-> good life= happiness. He then started talking bout bad lives and under high school he wrote ->video games = obesity, cyber stalker, serial killer! He then proceeded to talk about how if you play video games you'll end up one of these things and have a bad life. It was nearing the end of class and i was desperate to go to lunch so i didn't say anything on the matter.

My question is why is there such a bad rep about video games? do people honesty believe that games lead to people being serial killers or cyber stalkers?

Because people like to find scapegoats to blame, and violent videogames are one of the easiest things out there.

Because they're the latest in the succession of things to blame for the blemishes of society. People need a scapegoat for incompetence or malice. There is undoubtedly someone who believes the serial killer/cyber stalker bit.

Your history professor may have stumbled onto something with his equation...

In order to make video games, you need obesity, a cyber stalker, and a serial killer.

video games = obesity + cyber stalker + serial killer

The secrets of the video game industry are mine! I'm looking at you, Cooking Mama!

He's just upset that his "high school-> higher education-> job-> good life= happiness" idea failed him... I mean, he is a teacher.

I call shenanigans. Why was your history teacher talking about this?

And a follow-up question, are you absolutely sure he wasn't joking? Because it really sounds like he was joking.

The guy is a reactionary moron, I'd be willig to bet good money that he watches Fox News and better money that he's never played a game for any leangth of time in his life.

Jack the Ripper played GTA.
Charles Manson was a PONG fanatic.
Ed Gein LOVED the Saw games on the 360.
Ted Bundy played FF7 every time he killed someone.
David Berkowitz was a Dantes Inferno master.
John Wayne Gacey would spend hours a day playing text games on his C64.
Jeffrey Dahmer was just nuts (there's always one that doesn't follow the trend.
Albert Fish still plays Angry Birds on his iPhone.

what a crock of shit, hell if games lead to that, I'm sure some family would have sued Microsoft or Sony for murder when someone claimed that Halo caused them to want to kill. TV, comics, Games, Porn, Radio, Rock and Roll, Metal etc, all been blamed for societies problems...how about...some people TOTALLY SUCK and do not belong in society, PERIOD

that's my bit

First off, what grade are you in? I you're in anything past year 3 of high school, he has no right to try and tell you how to live your life.

Second, I would have raised my hand and said "But sir, according to recent studies, we've found that the majority of gamers are now middle aged women playing browser games! Are you saying most of our moms are fat serial killers waiting to happen?"

And then rejoice in the lols that would ensue form the class. XD

Tch.
Gamers can't be killers- we fear social interaction, our bones are brittle and muscles atrophied.

Which is why we kill through mean internet comments.

I play videogames.... so off course im a fat idiot, that stalks little kids, and murders people from here and there, with a compulsive behavior and disconnection from reality... i use my flaming knife of Ka'thalpoop to slice my victims...

Im tottaly not a man that loves videogames, and also goes to the Gym, and social activities with his friends and has a great notice of adventure and love for his family.... no what? Impossible... i must be a psychopath...

I could see how videogames could lead you to have a bad life if you did nothing but play them and didn't have a job or social contact and whatnot, but not many of us *cough* WoW addicts *cough* are that bad.

If anything video games have inspired me to stay in shape. I enjoy a game. I think a character looks cool. I cosplay as them. I work out to continue being about to cosplay. I go to conventions. I meet new people. I gain an enjoyable social life THANKS TO VIDEO GAMES!!!!!
tell your professor that he is a delusional, stereotyping, insult to intelligent thought. movies, comics and even books were stigmatized by the media since they could *Gasp* gave people an outlet to voice artistic expression. I'll tell you how much standards change.
Shakespeare in his time was considered absolute trash, people would only go to his plays to heckle the performers and have sex in the stands. Now his plays are called "High Art".
opinions change and people grow up. same will happen with games.

What history class is this? Frankly, your teacher doesn't seem to no what he's talking about. He's probably never touched a video game or even met a gamer and what's video games have to do with your history class anyways?

Wait... Has there even been a single serial killer that played games? I'm sure murders have happened with gamers but I don't think that a "serial" killer has ever appeared.
HA! intelligent reasoning wins again!

Did anyone else think Fox News when they saw the title?
Its pretty sad that your teacher feels that way.
You should tell him that food and a sedentary lifestyle makes you fat.
Being an awkward shady person on a social network makes you a cyberstalker.
Deciding to kill 2 or more people while not in the military makes you a serial killer.

All of these happen as a sum of the choices made in your life. It can't be boiled down or traced back to one event. You don't play video games and become 30% over ideal body weight. Maybe he was steriotyping that gamers lead a sedentary lifestyle with a bad diet. In such a case you should ask him if it is okay to say that (insert ethnic slur here).
Don't really know much about cyberstalkers other than they are only good if they are hot females doing it to me. (i can dream)
Serial killer... wow...
