I realized that if I defined "best game ever" as "the game I have the most fun playing" then that game would be Double Fine's Brutal Legend. While the mechanics have shortcoming they are in no way broken and the visuals+soundtrack more than make-up for it. Playing Brutal Legend is just pure fun. I'm curious to hear what everyone else considers their "best game ever".

As for Brutal Legend it was quite fun but I spent so much time travelling the map compared to doing anything more fun that I feel the fun was diluted. It was still fun, but could have been better.
Funnest game for a long time has been GTA V for me. Yeah baby yeah.

Answering this question is difficult for me. Why? Because the game that I've had the most fun playing over the years is probably World of WarCraft just because of how many friggin' hours I've put into it since it launched. Yet it's simultaneously also the game that I've probably had the least fun playing, judging by how many times I quit in frustration and how many angry rants I've had in the past with guildmates. And yet... I still have a ton of fond memories and I made a lot of really good friends that I still keep in touch with.

Otherwise, I'd probably say the original Deus Ex. I've played that game start to finish a ton of times. I always had fun choosing different dialogue options, trying out a JC Denton with different skill sets and augmentations, exploring all of the levels to find all of the Exploration Bonuses and hidden Easter eggs, reading all of the various books and newspapers and data cubes and emails... man, I love the hell out of that game. It probably helps that I genuinely find conspiracy theories to be amusing, and that's a universe where pretty much every conspiracy theory is actually truth and it's played completely straight.

Surprising nobody I have to say Persona 4. I'll skip that one for now though and go for more gameplay centred games. I have to mention the Attack on Titan tribute game, that thing is awesome. It's exactly what an AoT game should be, freeform swinging around a city trying to kill/not get killed by Titans. Around 36 of them in fact. The physics are pretty well balanced, you can easily get a feel for the speed and trajectories after a while.

It's very well made too, there are a load of characters some better than others *coughPetracough* but they're all fun in their own way

It's one of the best multiplayer experiences ever by the way. The sight of other players swinging around across the map having their own little battles while you and some others are fighting others is just plain cool. It's one of those things where everyone has their own little stories to tell. Like when a Sasha came flying round a corner with a running Titan in close pursuit and she was only alive because she has a speed buff that makes her super fast even on the ground (she eats a potato) before she grappled to a building as the thing bodyslammed the place she just was a second ago. So hype

Everyone picks up a phobia of the Crawlers (or Jumpers) at some point. Multiples of the one from Episode 5 just LEAPING at you, two times higher than rooftops and they run insanely fast on the ground too. One gets found, someone sends up a flare and like 5 people start a military operation to kill it. No exaggeration that one of them can wipe an entire server if you go with no respawns.

I've had so much fun in Skyrim. There's just...so much to do when you start modding it. There are stupid mods, beautiful mods, total conversion mods, it all makes my head spin when I think about just how much you can add to that game and how much time you can spend in it.

I go on about Skyrim a lot. It deserves it, though. The PC version, obviously.

It's probably not the best game I've ever played...yet. Un-modded, it's great fun but not superb. The best game I've ever played so far was probably Morrowind. The locations and soundtrack combined into something beautifully outlandish.

Tough call, i mean most fun and favorite can be very different things. If i am to go by hours spent alone, it'll probably be Tekken 6, Symphony of the Night or Dark Souls, but i don't know if they are the games i've had the most "fun" with. For just smirk-inducing fun gameplay and crazy i guess the accolade would have to go to DMC3, Bayonetta or Metal Gear Revengeance. Those games are, while at times frustrating, generally what i consider through and through "fun" games. I can just lose myself in the gameplay and laugh at how silly and wacky it is, while still having plenty of depth and challenge. Same can't really be said for the other titles i've spent loads of time on.

Maybe i'm over-thinking it though :p

I sank SOOO many hours into Oblivion and Skyrim on the XBOX 360 it was ridiculous. I have to agree with you that Oblivion... no Skyrim... no, well, both of them were the most fun I've ever had in a game. I plan on buying Skyrim for PC whenever it's majorly on sale again on Steam so I can finally join the mod craze that everybody has loved for a long time.

And, yeah. Games are SO fun.

This. A thousand times this.

OT: Most fun game I've ever played? Hm...TF2. Just for pure chaotic fun.

Most pure fun game? Hmmm I'm probably forgetting something but Vanquish, Far Cry 3 and Tomb Raider come to mind. Their gameplay is just so fluid, with fantastic controls and satisfying gunplay. Vanquish gets points for sheer ridiculousness and spectacle, Far Cry for knife kills, grenade arrows and wild animals and Tomb Raider for free climbing and environment design.

Rock Band (drums) is easily the most fun I've ever had gaming. I consider it my second favorite game of all-time though.

Diablo 3 gets that honour. Not for sheer fun but due to the great experience combined as a time sink. It's the ultimate background game to play while listening to music, watching netflix, webshows, listening to audio books or what have you. A great game in it's own right but not one that I play for immersion or constant intense fun.

Huh.

Call me a joyless old grump, but I struggle to think of any games like that. I mean, I can think of them. For example, I remember a great many fun times being had on the multiplayer of the original Halo.

However, in my mind, "pure fun" is always and forever utterly eclipsed by things that manage to bring meaning and weight and, dare I say it, depth to bear.

Most fun I've ever had with a game is probably Lollipop Chainsaw - just a really dumb game which has plenty of zombies to kill and really great bosses. Though it's very far from being my favourite game, which is Morrowind - a game I like mostly for the atmosphere, mechanics and world building.

Tell that to everyone who loved Gone Home :p
I just did :p
I'm sure Gone Home is amusing or entertaining one way or another, regardless of its subject matter or the emotional impact of the experience. Otherwise why would anybody play it? Just because something is psychologically scarring doesn't make it boring. Nobody plays games looking for boredom, we try to spark some amusement with them. I'm using the dictionary definition of fun of course - something "amusing or entertaining". God forbid a game be boring.

If I were to boil it down that far, ignore every other rewarding facet of playing games... I'd have to go with Unreal Tournament. Far from my favorite game, but it certainly is a huge amount of fun, especially at LAN parties.

Pretty much all my favorite games, Mass Effect 3, Dead Space 3, Portal 2, have an extremely high fun quotients.
I think fun is a very integral part (like 95%) of what makes a game truly "The Best".

Fun can be had in various ways though, through silly dialogue, through epic plot moments, through fluid gameplay, etc.

Burnout Revenge. If even just for the Crash Junctions: the most fun you can pack into a few seconds of gaming. It's great by yourself or passing the controller around.

But I do also tend to have a lot of fun in those huge weird open worlds like Brutal Legend, GTA, Just Cause, Fallout....

I'm not about to declare it my Best Game Ever, but Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is a freaking blast. Okay, as an AC game, it's really not that great, especially compared to AC2 and Brotherhood. But as a pirate game it's superb. And I looooooove pirates. Seriously, I've made a point to go out raiding ships for a couple of hours every day for the last few weeks, and it still doesn't get old. Of course, the fact that I want to get as high in the leaderboards probably has something to do with it. :p

Also, Sonic Generations. Story plays out like a bad fanfic, writing is eh, voice acting is eh, but the level design and gameplay are fucking flawless. I still get the itch to go boarding down City Escape or tear through Chemical Plant every now and then. And while the boss fights are hit-and-miss, the rival battles are incredible.

Bad story is easier to forgive than bad gameplay, the actual freakin' main part of a GAME.

For me I love games that are just fun. Its hard to choose a single one I had the most fun with. Maybe Lollipop Chainsaw or Prototype in the past and right now Im having a blast on the PS4 version of Warframe. Vanquish deserves an honorable mention as well.

By far and away these aren't the 'best' games I've played but they are definitely fun.
