Games by atlus, brilliant, or just a little too disturbing.

I am a fan, but I want to know what you think.

Games that have pushed the envelope (Digital devil saga, persona 2, and 3, and others) are truly brilliant in their writing and exectution, but I have heard from many that a game in wich they kill hitler (Japanese persona 2) and shoot themselves in the head (ala persona 3) were just a little too over the top.

Shin megami tensei persona 3 is a brilliant example of how extreme a game is that is good. Now, in most of todays shoot-em-ups I woulden't advise main characters to shoot themselves in the head, but this game breaks gaming convention, having the main character shoot himself up and barge into the enemy base with no plan other than "Shoot self in head, kill monsters, save people" and is more nessesary? YES! Then comes the social links, living each day of a mute RPG characters life seems dull, but is more challenging than it is boring! Each and every chunk of time must be used to power up ones persona, or other self, if you rather.

As per persona 2, I'm not too sure what to say, because I cannot read japanese, but, come on! killing hitler!

So, what's your opinion on games by atlus?

Well, I love the Trauma Centre series and also enjoyed Jack Bros on the Virtual Boy. It seems they're very talented developers. Just wish their games weren't so bloody hard :p

Brilliant? I played an Atlus game called Trauma Center and it was the most retarded anime bullshit I ever saw. It even started off with some solid gameplay mechanics and just went to shit after they kept adding unnecessary crap like bullet-time and super virus enemies.

Starbreeze Studios' The Darkness also has the player commit suicide. Twice.

On topic, I've only ever played a couple of Atlus's DS games, and didn't enjoy them all that much. Would have preferred Trauma Centre without the story, and with more craft-gluing arteries together. In the cases I've seen, the stories of the games are pretty alien to a Western audience. Interpret this as a good or bad thing as you choose.

They got the Megten Series so hell yeah. As for the shooting themselves in the head thing, the characters never made a big deal about it so neither did I. Though the Digitial devil saga series is just all around odd. Need to pick up P4 and the remake of the original Persona.

I have played some of thier games I absolutely loved (like DDS) but others fell short IMHO like (hang on I need to grab a flame shield....like Persona 3). Although it may be the cultural differences talking here but often feel they are trying to be deep just for the sake of being deep.

I tried to play the first Persona and gave up on it because I had no idea what the hell I was doing. I mean it took twenty minutes to walk around the damn city and random encounters popped up every few seconds. x_x It really didn't reflect well on the rest of the games Atlus made.

Been Playing DDS for a bit and found it to lack the same charm that P3 had but both DDS's excellent games. Though i feel like I'm missing something on the character side.

I found DDS's characters were suitable for the enviroment and the story where P3s for the most part annoyed me. Although so did the music, the social link thing and the repetative dungeon. Oh look it is not the same dungeon the foors are gold for the next 15 levels bothered me.

Fair enough, they are two completely different games whiten the series. Though i love DDS Charcters

Fair enough, they are two completely different games whiten the series. Though i love DDS Characters and story, I found something oddly addicting about trying to get to the top of Tartrus. Admittedly P3 's story shits on it self near the end.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I for the most part really enjoy atlus games, but like any publisher they can have hits or misses, super robot taisen endless frontier (try saying that 6 times fast) was awsome, trauma center.... well the operations were neat but the story was meh to ouch my head

I've never played a Persona game before. I'm deathly alergic to anime...

What am I missing out on?
In before something along the lines of: "the greatest series ever!!!!!"

I guess they kinda just got used to it, I mean they must have shot themselves a few hundred times.
