Mark Twain once said that a classic is a book no one wants to read, but everyone wants to say they have, I'd say that this applies pretty well to video games as well.
So how 'bout it Escapists? What games can you think of that fit that description?

Hey, maybe I might actually have a trafficked thread for once!

I really, really don't feel like playing Final Fantasy 7. But I kinda wish I could say that I did play it.

I guess Planescape: Torment? I hear its praises being sung on this site a lot, but almost always with the caveat that it takes a lot of getting into. Maybe Disgaea as well?

Shadow of the Colossus. I have it, but god damn is it just not at ALL fun to play. Look, I understand how artsy it is and I've enjoyed many art games in the past, but this one just....kinda sucks.

I agree with FF7. For me the big one is Silent Hill, mostly because I never owned a PS2 and to get one and a copy of the game would be a hassle. However, I know too many people that hold it as the pinnacle of psychological horror to admit that I haven't played it.

Shadow of the Colossus. I'm sure I'd enjoy it, but I have no desire to get a Playstation anything or download an emulator just for one game. But according to "High brow" gamers it is one of the best games there ever was, so I don't like to admit to not having played it ever.

Nethack.

I've played a little, but in a game where death (and game over - no reloads, boys and girls!) lurks beneath every footstep... Yeah. Those few, those brave, heroic few who manage to beat the game are not men. They are legends.

Mafia got great reviews when it came out, and apparently has a fantastic ending (I haven't finished it); but to be perfectly honest, it handles like crap because the cars are all from the 1920s, and while that might be historically accurate, it doesn't make driving them fun. The shooting gameplay is also pretty clumsy and weak.

Then again, this might just be me. Perhaps most people do actually like playing it.

Metal Gear series. It sounds awfully interesting, in an overly complicated sort of way. I usually love things like that. I'm just not sure where to get started, or if I could actually make it through all of the games, especially with the overabundance of cutscenes.

I also really like Persona 3 and 4, despite not having played either. I just read the Schildkrote Let's Play of 3, and watched the GiantBomb Endurance Run of 4. Both are excellent, and I might actually consider actually picking up a controller and doing it myself whenever Persona 5 comes out.

If games that you only really played the beginning of and then you claim to have played them, I have quite a few, KOTOR 1, Final Fantasy 1, 2, 4, and 5, (I actually played half of 6!), Silent Hill 2, Jedi Academy (didn't care for the campaign MP was good though), Duke Nukem 3D (what it gives me headaches), Doom, Wofenstein 3D, Dune 2, Sonic 1,2,3 and CD, Resident Evil 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and Survivor, Dead Space (Though the RE's and Dead Space I HATE) and many others.

All the kids want to look cool and they say that they played Duke Nukem Forever, but who wants to play a game that is that bad, or any that might be even worse? So they don't play it but say they did.

"Hey, Chuck, want to play Duke Nukem FOREVA!"
"Well, Bill, let's not and say we did."

Same here, I played a friend's copy and was very much underwhelmed. I like games with boss battles and I love me a good platformer, but SoTC is just boring.

I could rattle off a huge list, honestly, but here's just a few off the top of my head.

Killer 7
Ico
I Wanna Be The Guy
Fallout 2
Okami
Shadow of the Colossus
Bastion
Braid
Icewind Dale
Thief (First two)
Deus Ex (First one)
Eufloria
Super Meat Boy
Silent Hill
Planescape: Torment
Half-Life (First one)
Amnesia (lol)
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
No More Heroes
Magicka
Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale
Counter-Strike
Duke Nukem Forev - nah, that's one that we played but want to say we haven't. ;P
Frozen Synapse
Warhammer 40K Dawn of War II
Unreal
EVE Online? Maybe?
Thief (First two)
Deus Ex (First one)
X-Com

Also, add onto this list any roguelike, any persona series or jrpg, any space combat sim, any mech sim, any turn-based strategy.

The one I can think of off the top of my head is Phantasy Star 2. I played it almost to the end before losing my save (along with the entire cartridge, in fact). I have it on emulator now, but can't bring myself to restart from scratch. It feels like too much work now.

Oh, now that I think of it, the same goes for Arcanum - Of Steamworks and Magicka Obscura. I lost all savegames after MANY hours playing, and haven't yet summoned the courage to restart.

Planescape: Torment falls into a similar category: I went pretty far into it, got distracted by a different game, came back to realize I didn't remember much of what had happened in the game, started again, got a little less far than before (but still invested many hours in it), then installed the high-res mod which invalidated my save, so I'll have to start again. But I'll be definitely playing it through as soon as Skyrimly posible, if you catch my drift.

I really want to play either Morrowind or Oblivion, especially since Skyrim turned out so well. However, by today's standards, I don't think their graphics will have held up, and since the only computer I have is an old laptop, I can rule out any useful mods.

I honestly don't get the need to play old school titles other than to do comparisons with other games and I only would see the value in that if you where working in the games industry. Otherwise who seriously has the time?

Naw, you state like it's fact, but I believe it was a great game, that was enhanced by my phobias.
OT: The Lucas Arts/Tell Tale adventure classics.

Unfortunately, this applies to me for most "classic" games. As a new medium, growing incredibly fast like a caterpillar getting ready to enter its chrysalis, most of the classics are just dated. SotC, the Sonic and Mario games, FF7, and the list goes on. Of course, this is just my opinion, but still.
