I realise the title is a little ambiguous so let me explain:

Aaaaaaargh QTEs, I hate QTEs!
I hated Fahrenheit for it, I even created a thread about it.

Now Patapon, on the other hand is a rhythm action game, completely different...
Uh oh.

So Patapon has forced me to evaluate the "All QTEs are evil" philosophy. It's a really good (and very cute) game.

So has anyone else played a game that has changed their view of a genre (or a theme of the genre) for the better or worse?

Obvious I know but Modern Warfare 2 changed my mind about Infinity Ward not being able to do any wrong.

Resident Evil 5 changed my mind that (proper) Resident Evil games (with a number at the end) could not be bad.

Red Dead Redemption changed my mind that all Rockstar sandbox adventure games were good.

I don't usually go for racing games, but I'm not as adamant in that position ever since I raced against a friend in an Initial D arcade game on a whim.

Wasn't that Yahtzee's perspective, too? That if you actually build the game around them, they're understandable and acceptable?

This isn't really the same thing, but I did not like cartoony games when I was a kid (young teen). I went to rent something at blockbuster and when I got home I discovered Banjo and Kazooie in the box instead of whatever I rented. I was angry, thought I would hate it, but played it anyway. Instant love...I went out and bought it. Still one of my favorite games for the N64.

this is the most negative post i have ever seen.

anyway.

i used to completely avoid multiplayer in games and just go through the single player. TF2 changed that. THANKS TF2!

There just doesn't seem to a large amount of developers that care when it comes to FPSes. It's all the same song and dance, with regen health and not a complex thought while you kill the same aliens with the same guns. They don't want to make something enjoyable, they just want to be dirty school kids in the dirt pile, and the dirt is mooney.

Duke Nukem Forever, back from the grave. After 12 years of development hell, lawsuits galore, and most of the team going their own ways in the industry, there were 9. Not just any 9, but the 9 who cared about the Duke, his gum, and what form of element a Main character in an FPSes balls are. They worked out of their homes, living off ramen and mac and cheese just to make the Duke rise back from the ashes.

Enter Gearboox, where Randy Pitchford (CEO of the company I believe) came to them and asked "Need help?". What makes this great is that Randy himself worked on Duke 3d, and helped start Forever. So it all comes full circle, and the Duke is coming back. In 2011, their dream will come to life, and it will be awesome.
